Geoboards

geoboards

Submitted by Dimitri A

From Wikipedia:

A geoboard is a mathematical manipulative often used to explore basic concepts in plane geometry such as perimeter, area or the characteristics of triangles and other polygons. Consisting of a physical board with a certain number of nails half driven in, in a symmetrical square five-by-five array, students are encouraged to place rubber bands around the pegs to model various geometric concepts or to solve other mathematical puzzles. Two-dimensional representations of the geoboard may be applied to ordinary paper using rubber stamps or special “geoboard paper” with diagrams of geoboards may be used to help capture a student’s explanations of the concept they have discovered or illustrated on the geoboard.
Geoboards were invented and popularized by Egyptian mathematician Caleb Gattegno in the 1950s.

American Girl Dolls

samantha

Submitted by Maria S

The quinessential suburban toy. I remember getting the American Girl catalogs and leafing through them for hours at a time, wishing I could have all the dolls and their expensive-ass accessories. These were really more like collectors items than playthings, but try telling that to a 7-year old me. I owned Samantha- who, for the record, is the prettiest. Their gapteeth and opening-closing eyes were a little creepy, though.

I look back at all of those sketch comedic commercials that aired on the Amanda Show and laugh. The one scene from the Amanda Show that always stuck out the most in my brain was Meatloaf Crunch! You’ll have to see the vid to know what I mean if you don’t know what this is.
