Epic Win: TMNT Cereal Bowls

Dec. 22, 2009

Submitted by Justin A, cereal power!

I don’t even remember if I liked the cereal, but I had to have one of these bowls. Once I got a bowl, I think I only ate “bowl and spoon” foods for months.

For those of you who missed out on these cereal bowls during your youth, you can still buy complete sets online and for cheap. I know because I checked. That way, your “cereal only” diet can never end. I just hope you alternate your sugary corn cereals with something healthy that has, like, raisins in it. You could even serve yourself a small salad in one of these bowls. I would suggest Michelangelo, but that’s just me.

Epic Win: Barbie Fold N’ Fun House

Dec. 20, 2009

Submitted by Shannon S, not included (along with dolls, fashions, and batteries):

Just a guess: The novelty of this commercial has outlasted the actual dollhouse, itself. Even if the quality may seem a bit shoddy, every girl (and perhaps some of the boys) I knew wanted one of these things when the commercials hit the air in 1992. It was perfectly portable, which meant you could take it over to your friends’ and play. Or drag it along on long family road trips. And how ’bout that jingle?! Not really very catchy, is it? However, listening to it now, I am transported back in time, as I recall it playing during every commercial break on Nickelodeon.

Epic Win: Car Mats

Dec. 18, 2009

epic win from the past, car mats

Submitted by Alex M, whose insurance doesn’t cover driving on felt:

Dinky cars and, more importantly, the mats you used to play with them on. They looked like a city and had little roads and buildings on them and you could drive your cars from point A to B. I remember my friend had one and I would always go to his house to play dinky cars cause of a little peice of carpet. Win.

I sometimes still prefer pushing my Hot Wheels along cloth roads than driving for realz. That’s not weird…right?

Epic Win: Magic Works

Dec. 18, 2009

epic win from the past, magic works

Submitted by Jordan S, prestidigitator.

Before Arrested Development’s Gob appeared on the scene to (accidentally) spill the secrets of magicians everywhere, the only way many of us could uncover the the real “how to” behind magic tricks was if we had, like, a magician for an uncle. Or if you had one of these Magic Works kits! Who remembers The Crystal Cleaver? Or Mystery Dice? I definitely remember Clean Cut! I now have the urge to use words like “abra cadabra” and “shazam!”

Epic Win: Sound Books

Dec. 16, 2009

Submitted by Katie, press “sea urchin” now to hear her speak:

Does anyone even remember these? They were basically “electronic storybooks”. You were supposed to read the book and whenever you came across a picture within the text, you had to press the button on the side panel that matched the picture to hear the sound it represented. Quite a few of them were put out by Disney. I think they make books with the same concept today, but the ones from the early 90’s were so much cooler.

Confession: I still sometimes play with these in the store. They combine my three favorite things: Pictures, sound clips, and button pressing.
