Epic Win: McDonald’s Happy Meal Food Changeables

Jan. 11, 2010

Submitted by Courtney W, who transforms into a cheezburger.

Also known as: Fast Food Transformers. I wonder why Michael Bay hasn’t cast Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf in a movie about these Happy Meal classics. You never know; I may have spoken too soon. I can see it happening. Anyway, as far as memorable Happy Meal toys go, I think these are probably up there.

Epic Win: Pogs

Jan. 8, 2010

win-pictures-pogs

Submitted by J Olsen, who collected milk caps before it was cool.

These circular bits of cardboard (and the thicker, heavier, plastic “slammers” also used to play the game) became all the rage in the ’90s, though similar games had been played as early as the 17th century. The gist was this: Stack your pogs up, face down, and allow your opponent to throw his slammer at the stack. If any of your pogs landed face up after the dust settled, they became his pogs (if you were playing “for keeps,” anyway). I remember these things were everywhere…for a very short amount of time. People moved on to Tamagotchis or something, leaving pogs to be remembered fondly by those of us who did most of our growing up in the ’90s.

Epic Win: NERF Turbo Football

Dec. 30, 2009

Submitted by Victor C, launched not thrown.

NERF, generally, makes me think of P.E. classes. We used Nerf products for just about every game. Nearly all of the balls had chunks of “nerf” (also known as “foam”) taken out of them. However, the footballs, including the Turbo Football shown above, seemed to hold up better than the soccer balls. I also recall that, despite the soft nature of the material, the seam that ran around the ball was always rather hard and could hurt if it hit you just right. Anyway, the advertisement above definitely takes me back to my Nickelodeon years, when I probably viewed an uncountable number of NERF commercials. At some point, I probably believed that, with a NERF Turbo Football, even I could throw a ball around the world. False advertising! Also, I would like to say, as a sidenote, that “nerf” is a really odd word to type repeatedly.

Epic Win: Geoboards

Dec. 30, 2009

geoboards

Submitted by Dimitri A, rubber band rectangle.

Geoboards, invented in the 1950s, are square, plastic boards studded with evenly-spaced pegs in a 5×5 configuration. The pegs are meant to hold rubber bands so that students, and other bored people, can create geometric shapes. I most definitely remember using these, but for some reason I don’t recall using them in a scholastic context. I remember using many rubber bands on one board, layering them to make more interesting (and maybe, occasionally, inappropriate) shapes. Not only educational, but kind of fun. Until a rubber band snapped on your finger, anyway.

Epic Win: WWF Wrestling Buddies

Dec. 23, 2009

Submitted by Zalman L, human-shaped pillow.

I remember that my brother and I had at least two of these, and I believe they were the same two pictured above. Instead of having the “buddies” wrestle each other, we mostly just swung the dolls and hit each other in the face. It hurt a bit more than you’d think, considering they were plush. I’m sure the professionals would have expected no less.
