Epic Win: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Jun. 29, 2009

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was an Epic Win for turning any seemingly harmless brook, bridge, or foggy night into a spooky, impassable path. It inspired fear in so many of us as youth. One of our writers (at the time, a grown man) often recounts not being able to stay in the theater anytime the trailer for the ‘99 version of Sleep Hollow starring Johnny Depp came on.
It’s amazing that a story almost 190 years old can still inspire so much fear.

Epic Win: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

May. 11, 2009

once upon a win

Submitted by Priscilla O

We’d forgotten all about the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series until we saw the above photograph. Stephen Gammell’s illustrations brought all of the terror flooding back into our memories. If you were lucky enough to check this one out of your school library (since it was always checked out) or your parents ordered it for you through the Scholastic Books program, you probably had the wits scared out of you more than once while reading it.
Not until we started researching did we find out that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was the most contested book between 1990-2000 because of it’s sometimes graphic descriptions of violence. We’re glad the old fuddy-duddy’s who tried to have this book removed from our libraries didn’t succeed, because our literary experiences growing up would have been far less rounded without this great collection.

Epic Win: Castlevania

Apr. 23, 2009

Castlevania was an epic NES game that shaped the future of gameplay and spawned a great series of games. Werewolves and vampires were a staple of pop-culture in the 80’s and early 90’s and this game complimented that time very well.

Epic Win: Disney’s Haunted Mansion

Apr. 20, 2009

once upon a win

These days just about every city has a good haunted house around Halloween, but back in our day, the only good haunted mansion to be found was at Disneyland or Disney World and could be visited year round. It used to scare the wits out of us too, after our older siblings or cousins were done filling our heads with stories about real corpses being in the mansion and things like that.

Epic Win: Thriller

Apr. 16, 2009

How does one go about describing how much of an epic win Thriller is? How do you synthesize all that awesome down into a few paragraphs? Is it because Thriller was one of the first mini-film music videos? Or because the choreography was so catchy that it’s been remade by countless people in weddings, video games, Legos, and even prison?

Here are just a few examples of remakes:
