Epic Win: The Adventures of Pete & Pete

Jan. 28, 2010

Submitted by Gina R, the strongest woman…in the world!

The Adventures of Pete and Pete began as minute-long shorts aired between programs on Nickelodeon in 1989. The shorts were popular, and the rest, as they say, is history. The show ran for three seasons, from 1993 to 1996. It was silly and surreal and was a favorite among most of the people in my age bracket. It also boasted a pretty impressive list of guest stars, including Debbie Harry, Selma Blair, Michael Stipe, Janeane Garofalo, and LL Cool J. The first two seasons are available on DVD, so if this was a childhood favorite, check ‘em out! And tell us about your favorite episodes in the comments.

Epic Win: Mr. Wizard’s World

The old man may seem creepy this day and age, but this show was awesome back in the day. I remember bugging the crap out my mom and dad to get supplies for a lot of those experiments.

Epic Win: Discovery Zone

Dec. 8, 2009

Submitted by Alain C, party crasher.

Oh, the number of birthday parties we attended at Discovery Zone! I believe I probably logged more “party hours” at a Discovery Zone than I did at a Chuck-E-Cheese over the course of my childhood. Re-watching this advertisement (which sparked a dozen memories instantly), I realize it wasn’t the ball pit or the tubes you crawled through or the “party rooms” with cafeteria-style seating that brought me back each time; it was my favorite Nickelodeon characters coercing me! What clever (and cruel) cross-promotion. Ah, well. I stopped attending Discovery Zone parties at about the same time I noticed them shutting down around town. Just as well, right? You reach a certain age and ball pits no longer seem fun, they just seem icky.

Epic Win: KaBlam!

Oct. 23, 2009

Submitted by Thomas A, action figure

Nick’s cartoon variety show, KaBlam!, featured a number of infamous sketches, including Action League Now, Prometheus and Bob, and my favorite, Sniz & Fondue, seen above. It was pretty cool how KaBlam! showcased different animation styles. And I’ve always adored Henry and June.

Nickelodeon magazine was the best thing ever! I used to read it in the library during lunch, and secretly steal the free prizes.
