’80s Music Video Thursday: Crazy Car Drivin’ Homo sapiens

Jan. 7, 2010

Is it Thursday already?! Good thing, because that means today is—say it with me!—’80s Music Video Thursday! Please feel free to make suggestions for next week’s edition in the comments

“Homosapien” by Pete Shelley, submitted by MaryIn Boise:

I remember seeing this goofy video when I was a kid and really wishing I could have that computer in the background.

My subtext detector is going off…

“Cars” by Gary Numan, also submitted by Maryln Boise.

Some pretty snazzy special effects and tons of guyliner. Sounds like ’80s Music Video Thursday to me!

“She Drives Me Crazy” by Fine Young Cannibals.

I apologize for the falsetto. But the pillow outfit is pretty darn cool. Ultimately, I’d just like to say “You’re welcome,” because I know, 12 hours from now, this song will still be stuck in your head.

’80s Music Video Thursday: The Future Is Here

Dec. 31, 2009

Welcome to the last ’80s Music Video Thursday of 2009! As always, suggestions for next week are welcome in the comments. After review, some will be selected and posted in the distant future…of 2010!

“Major Tom (Coming Home)” by Peter Schilling, submitted by CosmykDolfyn:

I want to live in cars stacked up like this.

“Down Under” by Men at Work, submitted by many users, including QuoteMan.

Well, this was a mighty popular pick! Seems many of you cherish this video the way I cherish mid-’90s Mariah Carey videos (the tire swing in “Always Be My Baby,” anyone?). One thing I learned while watching the first few seconds of the “Down Under”: Beyonce stole her “Single Ladies” leotard look from one of these Men at Work!

“New York, New York” by Nina Hagen.

Ms. Hagen traded a discernable melody for some lovely eye makeup application skills. And that, dear readers, is what I like about her.

Do They Know It’s ’80s Music Video Thursday?

Dec. 24, 2009

Welcome back to ’80s Music Video Thursday. This week, perhaps predictably, we present to you a small assortment of holiday themed offerings. Next week, we’ll get back to posting your suggestions. For now, enjoy a very ’80s Christmas with these videos:

“Do They Know it’s Christmas?” by Band Aid

Detractors have called this song and the entire Band Aid endeavor condescending, insincere, self-righteous, and even diabolical. I suppose some of those are hard to argue when Bono is featured on the track. But certainly the original idea was to do good and to be charitable at a time of year when some people only like to think of themselves.

“Little Drummer Boy” by Bing Crosby and David Bowie.
This clip features some really good scripted dialogue between Mr. Crosby and Mr. Bowie before they jump into the song. Cheesiness aside, it’s an interesting pairing, and the result is a nice little Christmas ditty.

“Last Christmas” by Wham!
This United Colors of Benetton advert…Um, I mean…This Wham! video embraces the ’80s in the same ways that most of Wham!’s other videos embrace the ’80s. The song became a holiday classic. The video? Not so much. But it’s fun to remember; and it’s more fun to laugh.

Do you feel like you might enjoy a literal translation of the video more than the original? As an extra special holiday bonus—a gift from me to you—please enjoy a “literal translation” of the events featured in Wham!’s video for even more laughs. Find it behind the jump:

Epic Win: Deee-Lite

Dec. 22, 2009

Submitted by MJSMFANFOREVER, groovemaster.

Unofficially, we’ll call this 90s Music Video Tuesday. Don’t count on it becoming a trend or anything, unless you beg me to make it one. Then we’ll see what I can do. Anyway. Deee-Lite. You remember them. Well, you remember this song. There is a good chance you don’t remember anything about the group itself. This was their one big hit: “Groove is in the heeeaaa-ah-ah-ah-ahrt.” The song is a prime example of funky 90s dance music, and the video is a prime example of over-saturated 90s music videos. My personal favorite part is at the very beginning: The white fur coat, the gibberish French, and the echo of “Deee-Lite…lite…lite…”

’80s Music Video Thursday: Y Kant Bananarama Rap?!

Dec. 17, 2009

You know the drill by now. But if not: Welcome to ’80s Music Video Thursday, where we post gems from the Golden Age of music video clips. As always, suggestions for next week are welcome in the comments.

“I Heard a Rumor” by Bananarama, submitted by QuoteMan.

Some of the fashion in this video makes Lady GaGa look like a jeans-and-t-shirt gal. Quality ’80s “what were they thinking” to be found here. Personally, I can’t listen to Bananarama without thinking of Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders’ parody of the band called “Lananeeneenoonoo.”

“Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do) by Wham, submitted by uffda.

I imagine that they were going for “cool.” But it mostly just looks like Grease.

“The Big Picture” by Y Kant Tori Read, submitted by Leven:

Ladies and gentlemen, I proudly (well, with as much pride as I can muster for even knowing about this video) present Y Kant Tori Read’s lone single and music video: The Big Picture.

Wow. Ms. Amos certainly has…evolved…artistically since the ’80s, has she not?
