Epic Win: The Little Mermaid

Jan. 8, 2010

Submitted by Marcy P, poor unfortunate soul.

I believe that most of us would consider this “classic” Disney. Most of us could, upon request, sing part of at least one song from this film. What’s that I hear? A request? Well, I don’t kno—”I wanna be where the people are, I wanna see, wanna see ‘em dancin’, walkin’ around on those—whad’ya call ‘em?—Oh. Feet.” It’s true, I opted for something other than “Under the Sea.” I’m unpredictable like that. This film helped rejuvenate the Disney animated film franchise, which had been faltering (both commercially and critically) through the ’80s. And to this day, every child I know owns and watches this movie repeatedly, each time like it’s the first time.

Epic Win: Race Car Tape Rewinders

Jan. 6, 2010

Submitted by Diana R, anti-DVD lobbyist.

In the age of the DVD and Blu-Ray, it’s easy to forget that, at one time, we had to eject those big bulky VHS tapes and rewind them in separate machines made to look like foreign sports cars. Well, you didn’t have to use one of these machines to rewind a tape, but it did excite the process a little. It is true that they performed their sole function a lot faster than the VHS players did, and so it would be hard to argue that they didn’t serve their purpose. It’s just nice to have the extra shelf space these days, I guess. Although, were I to still use VHS at all, I would probably try and find one of these rewinders to serve all of my rewinding needs.

Epic Win: The Aristocats

Jan. 5, 2010

Submitted by Bob S, aristocrat.

Though this 1970 Disney film (the first not to be supervised by Mr. Disney) was not a commercial success, it seems that many people still hold the film dear. How could you not? The playful pun of the film’s title? The drugging of adorable cartoon kittens? A kidnapping plot? Cats singing jazz in 1910 France? I like the “scales and arpeggios” scene with the piano-playing cats. Commercial success or not, I’ll take my Aristocats over Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Singing animals are not always a pleasure to watch.

Monday WTF: “Top That” Rap from Teen Witch

Jan. 4, 2010

Welcome back to Monday WTF. And it’s the very first WTF of 2010! Suggestions for future editions of Monday WTF are welcome in the comments.

Submitted by Devastating Dave, supersonic.

Oh, how this made me laugh. I mean really laugh. A good gut-buster. A knee-slapper, if you will. This magical (pun intended) film moment is the perfect storm of all the right ingredients: Rapping, late ’80s fashion, lip synching, bad dancing, randomness, sassiness, witchcraft, and did I mention rapping? Last season on 30 Rock, Kenneth performed a short portion of this song. I think, now, I would like to watch both, one right after the other, on loop, until the end of days. “Look at how funky he is!” Say it with me now: WTF?!

Epic Win: The Muppet Christmas Carol

Jan. 1, 2010

Submitted by Rosemary S, ghost of Christmas past (the year 1376, specifically).

This 1992 adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas story starred, you know, Jim Henson’s Muppets in most of the roles (though Scrooge was played by Michael Caine, who I think has appeared in every movie ever). I remember that on the last day of school before Christmas break, for many years, my classes would have Christmas parties that involved watching this movie. It has become somewhat of a holiday classic, and rightfully so. Who could forget Kermit the Frog singing “One More Sleep ‘Til Christmas?” Ah, those Muppets…They had some good movie moments.
