Epic Win: Mr. Yuk

Feb. 25, 2009

Submitted by C Hicks

Was everyone high during the 70’s and 80’s? Look at the psychedelic background choice in this commercial. They definitely weren’t candy-coating their messages back then either. Now they’ve got childproof caps so they can sell toxic junk with cute cartoon characters like the Scrubbing Bubbles brush.
Did anyone actually know what these meant when they were a kid or was it just another card full of stickers to play with?

Epic Win: Silly Putty

Feb. 6, 2009

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by S Bobleter

When we were kids Silly Putty was great for bouncing, reversing newspaper print and making farting noises by rolling a ball with a pocket of air in the middle. Now that we’re older Silly Putty is still just as useful. According to LifeHackery.com, you can use Silly Putty to find lost contact lenses, sewing needles, and other small things, count money easily, and even keep your beverages cooler longer. What kind of cool uses can you come up with for Silly Putty?

From Wikipedia:

Silly Putty (originally called Nutty Putty, and also marketing by other companies as Thinking Putty, Bouncing Putty and Potty Putty) is the Crayola owned trademark name for a class of silicone polymers known as Bouncing Putty. It is marketed today as a toy for children, but was originally created by accident during research into potential rubber substitutes for use by the United States in World War II.

It was after its success as a toy that other uses were found. The material’s unique properties have found niche use in medical and scientific applications. It is used in large quantity by physical therapists for rehabilitative therapy of hand injuries. A number of other brands have emerged which alter the material’s properties offering different levels of resistance for this market. Power Putty and TheraPutty are examples. Though primarily used as a toy for children the material is also used therapeutically for stress reduction. In the home it can be used to pick up dirt, lint and pet hair, and because of its adhesive characteristics it was even used by Apollo astronauts to secure their tools in zero-gravity.

Epic Win: Dustbuster

Feb. 4, 2009

Submitted by H Edwards

Even though they don’t make ‘em like they used to, DustBusters from the 80’s and 90’s were full of epic win. There’s probably thousands of DustBusters originally purchased in the 80’s, still out there and still working. The DustBuster belongs in the Men’s Hall of Fame, right next to Duct Tape and WD-40.

From Wikipedia:

The Black & Decker DustBuster is a cordless vacuum cleaner that was introduced in January, 1979.

It was designed by Carroll Gantz, FIDSA, when he was Manager of the B&D US Consumer Power Tool Division’s Industrial Design Department. It was developed by Black & Decker. Over a million Dustbusters were sold in its first year, four times that of the traditional hand-held vac market. It also came in 110v with an attachable hose and tools. As the name suggests, the device used suction power to pick up fine dirt, such as, pet hair, dust, etc. The product has been redesigned several times. However, The original DustBuster has been discontinued by Black & Decker.
