Epic Win: ’80s Juicy Fruit Commercials

Dec. 27, 2009

Submitted by B. Hunter, who was moved by the taste:

1980s Juicy Fruit commercial: Epically epic.

They certainly did come up with a catchy, persistent jingle, eh? It’s lasted so long (they’d want me to say something like “almost as long as Juicy Fruit’s flavor!”) that it was used in a new commercial as recently as last year. Some might call that lazy, using the same song for 2 decades of commercials, but I say they just got it right early on!

Epic Win: Chiclets Gum

Chiclets Gum is probably the most commonly used filler for diner candy machines round the world, which is why every American has probably tried at least once to chew a ball of Chiclets gum comprised of at least 10 pieces until their jaw hurts. Who didn’t have at least one friend that tried to see how many pieces he could shove in his mouth before he couldn’t chew any longer? Especially if it involved taunting the kid who didn’t have a quarter to get some of his own…
He looked something like this bizarro Thai Chiclets ad we found:

Then as an adult, many of us rekindled our relationship with Chiclets when we tried to quit smoking. It became such a cultural phenom that even Kevin Smith took at a dig at Chiclets’ marketing gurus on Clerks:

Epic Win: Big Red Gum

“No little Cinnamon gum freshens breathe longer than Big Red. So kiss a little longer…”

Big Red was one of the only gums of the 80’s and 90’s with flavor that actually lasted for a decent amount of time. We remember not liking Big Red as kids because it was too spicy. The cinnamon flavor was just too intense for our sensitive little tongues.

Remember this commercial? With the kid from Christmas Story as a band geek making out with some girl on the street corner? Yeah, that’d never happen…

Epic Win: Bubble Tape

“For you, not them.” Remember those terrible commercials? Just in case you don’t remember, here’s the one with the lunch lady and gym teacher:

Maybe the reason we can’t understand how this compelled us to buy a 6-foot strip of mostly tasteless chewing gum is because we have become “them”.

Epic Win: Bazooka Joe

Feb. 10, 2009

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by P Rivera

Just about the cheapest gum you can get and it comes with a free comic that’s usually pretty entertaining. The best part about Bazooka Joe is the mega bubbles you can blow if you shove several pieces in your mouth at once. How many pieces can you fit?
