Epic Win: Big League Chew

Dec. 24, 2008

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by M Haun

What is it about this bubble gum that makes people want to cram as much of it as possible into their mouths, and then blow a bubble the size of your head?

I had a very unfortunate haircut one summer because a friend dared me to do this with some Big League Chew. *sigh* childhood.

WARNING: THIS IS THE STICKIEST STUFF KNOWN TO MANKIND. Do not attempt this unless you don’t mind gum in your hair for weeks.:

Epic Win: Pop Rocks

Dec. 18, 2008

win-pictures-pop-rocks

Submitted by M Block

Ah, the humble Pop Rock–it managed to fizz in your mouth and taste vaguely stale at the same time. Also, you could die if you ate Pop Rocks and drank Coke at the same time! DIE!!! The Pop Rock story was kid urban legend, and it was always “my friend said some kid died from these.” “Some kid” had a really rough time of it, didn’t they? Anyway, legend had it that if you did this, your stomach would explode. EXPLODEY DEATH!!!

As much as I love a good urban legend, it’s simply not true. See for yourself:

It turns out that the reason Pop Rocks were pulled from the market wasn’t EXPLODEY DEATH, but the fact that they had the shelf-life of your average fruit fly. Bummer.

Epic Win: Orville Redenbacher Commercials

Dec. 17, 2008

Orville Redenbacher had quite a bit of personality for an old guy selling popcorn.

Not bad, right? Popcorn isn’t the sexiest product in the world, but he does alright in a folksy and charming way.

This, on the other hand (Orville’s first posthumous commercial), is disturbing. In fact, it should come with a warning, which I’ll give you, because I’m caring that way:

WARNING: THE SQUICK FACTOR ON THIS VIDEO IS OFF THE CHARTS, YO. WHOEVER DID THIS TO ORVILLE SHOULD BE ASHAMED AND NEVER, EVER MAKE ANOTHER COMMERCIAL.

The original submission and a bane of office life after the jump.

Epic Win: Fun Dip

Dec. 2, 2008

Once Upon A Win

From Wikipedia:

Fun Dip is similar to fellow Wonka product Pixy Stix, but sold in small pouches, rather than paper or plastic straws. It generally consists of three packets of flavored and colored sugar, along with two edible candy sticks called “Lik-A-Stix”. It is intended to be consumed by licking the sticks and using the moistened stick to collect some of the sugar. The most common flavors are cherry, grape, and a raspberry/apple combination that turns from blue when dry to green when wet with saliva. It also comes in sour flavors, including sour watermelon, sour apple, and sour lemonade. Packets with one stick and two flavors were once the standard, and packets with only one or two flavors are still available with less prominence than the now-standard three-flavor package.

Epic Win: Where’s the Beef?

Dec. 2, 2008

From Wikipedia:

Clara Peller (August 4, 1902 – August 11, 1987), was an American character actress who, at the age of 81, starred in the 1984 “Where’s the beef?” advertising campaign for the Wendy’s fast food restaurant chain. Peller’s “Where’s the beef” line became an instant catch phrase, with even presidential candidate Walter Mondale using it. Despite the immense popularity of the advertising campaign, Peller was fired by Wendy’s in 1985 after declaring that she had “found the beef” in an advertisement for Prego Plus pasta sauce.
