Most people remember Dave Thomas as that friendly old guy with the glasses that was on all the Wendy’s commercials back in the 90’s. What they might not know or remember about Dave Thomas is that he was a total bad-ass.
First-off, Dave was adopted and never met his biological parents. Dave got his first job at the age of 12, which he was fired from because of a misunderstanding. After that, he vowed to never be fired from another job again, and didn’t.
During the Korean War, rather than be drafted, Dave volunteered for the Army. He went to the Cook’s and Baker’s school where he became a mess sergeant and eventually a Staff Sergeant. After being honorably discharged, he went to work for none-other than Colonel Sanders, where he personally saved a failing KFC and revolutionized fast food menus as we know them.
Not satisfied with being the genius behind Col. Sanders, Dave sold his franchises of KFC that he’d earned and started his own restaurant named after his niece.
Later in life Dave was all about doing right by his past. Since he was adopted, he started the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Since he never finished high school and didn’t want to set a bad example to young Americans, he went back to school and got his GED.
And if it weren’t for all that, we’d still hail Dave Thomas as an epic win for his appreciation of the square hamburger, his contribution to the deliciousness of french fries, and his invention of the Frosty, tastiest malted shakes ever.
