Monday WTF: Ed Wood Movie Trailers

Dec. 28, 2009

Welcome back to our Monday WTF. Please feel free to leave suggestions for our next WTF post in the comments.

Truthfully, anything Ed Wood is pretty WTF. Break down any of his films, and pretty much every element will make you say WTF. Mr. Wood, himself, was kind of WTF. But, oh, how he amuses. Generally considered to be the “worst director of all time,” his films, which dealt mostly with sci-fi themes, are a pleasure to watch because they’re so bad. The dialogue, the subject matter, the cardboard sets, the hubcaps used as flying saucers. Oh, man. Just talking about it makes me want to break out my Ed Wood box set. For a sampler of Ed Wood’s brilliance, have a peek at the video above, which touches on defining Wood elements like sex changes, monsters, serial killers, sex maniacs, and woman-on-ape action.

Epic Win: Akira

Aug. 13, 2009

once upon a win

Submitted by Karen M

Anime is pretty tricky territory — people either love it or hate it. But if there was ever one film that could convince the nonbelievers, it was 1988’s Akira, well regarded not just within circles of anime fans, but film buffs. Akira was shortlisted on Empire’s 500 Greatest Films of All Time.

Best part of the movie:

Kaneda: TETSSSSUUUUUUOOOOOOO!!!!!

Tetsuo: KKKKAAAANNNNNEEEEEDDDDDAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!111111

I had “TETSUO!” scribbled on my doodle infested folder in junior high.

Remember when Zorro was about more than just poorly executed CGI and Catherine Zeta-Jones’ boobs? It was a simpler time, when kids regarded him as a hero and would emulate him by cutting masks out of their mother’s best fabric instead of regarding him as just another crappy Hollywood remake.

Epic Win: Close Encounters of the Third Kind

“This means something. This is important.”

Richard Dreyfus’ slow decline into insanity and the revelation that he wasn’t really insane, coupled with Steven Speilberg’s incredible vision and cinematography for the time period made Close Encounters of the Third Kind a totally Epic Win. Anyone old enough to remember the film can probably still hum the first few notes that aliens played after the landed, not to mention the most memorable line in the film, as Richard Dreyfus builds a mountain of mashed potatoes.

If you’re a young’un who’s never seen CEo3K, you should go out and rent it so you can see what good storytelling used to look like.

Epic Win: High Fidelity

Jun. 20, 2009

High Fidelity was an Epic Win of the ’90s and a quintessential film for anyone who enjoys quality music… And hipsters. High Fidelity is the movie we all wish we could sit down and force-feed to every teeny bopper who has no idea what it means to listen to really enjoy music. It also helps that it’s got the likes of John Cusak, Jack Black, and Tim Robbins in it.
