Epic Win: Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing

Aug. 31, 2009

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by K Reynolds

I remember using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing in computer class. There was a level where you were racing a car. It was way cooler than it sounds, I swear. I never did catch that car though…

Nowadays, kids don’t need software to teach them how to type. No, they’re totally wired in, sending text messages every ten seconds. Damn kids!

The Commodore 64 is an Epic Win for bringing home computing and games to the masses. Not only was it stand-alone as a game console, but if you were savvy enough you could also program on it.

Epic Win: Floppy Disks

May. 30, 2009

floppy-disks

Submitted by WerewolfCyote

Remember how awesome floppy disks were? Storing your data was so easy. Remember you could go to the flea market and get bootlegged software like Zork and Leisure Suit Larry that your parents would never agree to buying. And who could forget when The Geek bets a stack of Floppies for Sam’s panties on Sixteen Candles?

Epic Win: Dot Matrix Printer Paper

May. 3, 2009

once upon a win

Submitted by Jeremiah G

Dot Matrix Printer Paper is more of an epic fail because of all the times we had to reprint our papers because we accidentally ripped the page, but at the time of it’s invention it was a drastic improvement to all of it’s alternatives. Remember when you first got your Dot Matrix Printer and you didn’t have to hand-write or type out your paper anymore? Then when you managed to tear the pages apart and rip the dot matrix strips off of the side, you could make springy things by folding them.

Epic Win: You Don’t Know Jack

Apr. 14, 2009

once upon a win

You Don’t Know Jack was the ultimate catalyst for fighting with siblings and cousins. Since you had to share the keyboard to enter your answers, eventually the poor-sport of the group would start smacking hands, answering questions for you and generally making it difficult to get a good score. At the same time the comedian host of YDKJ would mock you when you got answers wrong, to questions that were complicated, silly or confusing, which only added to tension.

Don’t remember how frustrating it was? Play YDKJ Online and see if you can beat our top trivia player’s scrore of $15,113. Choose your answers wisely because the questions don’t change, so if you play a second time you already know all the answers.
