Epic Win: Origami Fortune Telling

May. 7, 2009

once upon a win

Submitted and written by Kacie H

Who doesn’t remember making this fortune telling game out of a sheet of paper? After folding the paper, you decorate the outside squares with colors, then the inside flaps with numbers or words. Open the innermost flaps and write the fortunes on each flap. Then your friend chooses one of the four colors. You spell that color out, while moving the fortune teller in and out. Then your friend chooses one of the numbers that is showing. You move the fortune teller in and out the number of times according to the number they chose. When you finish, your friend chooses one of the four visible numbers, and you open the flap under that number to read their fortune.

It was especially useful for finding out which boy in your 6th grade class you were going to marry – and the friend who made it was always nice enough to put a couple nerds in there.

Epic Win: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

May. 4, 2009

once upon a win

Submitted by Matt B

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is another one of those bedtime stories that many of us demanded as children. The story was very simple, but the illustrations were intricate and spell-binding. The only thing that didn’t make sense to us as we started to get older was why the caterpillar ate all of that fruit and junk food – caterpillars are generally herbivores that live off of plant life.

Epic Win: The Stinky Cheese Man

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales was an epic parody of all of the fairy tales we were told as children. They didn’t make much sense though unless you already knew the story of The Gingerbread Man or The Ugly Duckling.

Epic Win: Calvin and Hobbes

Feb. 2, 2009

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by B Dawson

Calvin & Hobbes taught us everything we needed to know as kids. Girls are gross. Build forts out of furniture. Daydream in class. Go outside as often as possible.

But one of the most important things Calvin & Hobbes taught us about were all of the sinister things that lurk beyond childhood. Things that we were quickly approaching such as how to keep your imagination alive so you don’t become a soul-suckingly boring old person like your parents, don’t smoke cigarettes, and always laugh at life, no matter how depressing it got. And always laugh in the face of intimidation.
