Epic Win: Monty Python and the Holy Grail

May. 6, 2009

Submitted by Aron

“I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.”
“She turned me into a newt!”
“Don’t like her?! What’s wrong with her?! She’s beautiful. She’s rich. She’s got huge… tracts o’ land!”
“What… is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?”
“Ni!”

We could go on and on… Monty Python and the Holy Grail is an almost inexhaustible source of epic quotes that are still used so frequently that they sometimes get annoying, even 34 years after the movies release… But we doubt that will stop you all from doing it, so get on with it!

Epic Win: Sixteen Candles

Apr. 26, 2009

Submitted by Ashley

“What’s happening hot stuff?”

What would the 80’s have been if it weren’t for John Hughes and Molly Ringwald? Sixteen Candles is an Epic Win for all of it’s crazy quirkiness. Long Duk Dong, the geek, etc., were just icing on the cake of an epic movie that defined a generation.

Epic Win: JELL-O Pops

Apr. 24, 2009

In stark contrast to today’s children’s snack food commercials, these seem so naive and innocent. They present the Jell-O pudding pops as something appetizing and delicious for children, while also appealing to parents with their healthy calorie claims. Today’s brands wouldn’t dare announce their calorie count on television or they would have to dress it up with clever marketing by using the per serving claims (and then announce that a serving is only 1/4 of the Popsicle).
To top it all off, they have Bill Cosby, who’s pudding pop commercials were epic and impressions of them and of Cosby have become part of our pop culture lexicon.

Epic Win: The Monkees

Apr. 22, 2009

once upon a win

Submitted by Tourbeau

“Hey, hey we’re the Monkees! And people say we monkey around!”

When The Monkees television show started, the band members were nothing but hired actors and vocalists, but by the end of the show they had fought for the rights to supervise all musical output by the band. If only current pop stars could take ques from the Monkees. Just in that right they deserve an Epic Win.
Furthermore, without the Monkees, there wouldn’t be the iconic “I’m a Believer,” which we’ll go ahead and credit for the initial success of the first Shrek movie, “Daydream Believer” or a host of other excellent songs that are woven into the history of music, as well as a show beloved by many of that generation.

Epic Win: Walter Cronkite

Apr. 22, 2009

once upon a win

Walter Cronkite joined CBS in 1962, became the first half-hour long nightly news anchor in September of 1963, informed us of Kennedy’s assassination in November of 1963, and from there, quickly became “a comfortable old shoe” to the American public (as he aptly put it in 1981 when he retired).

Below is a clip of Cronkite announcing President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. We would greatly prefer a return to this, as opposed to the prancing, shouting bobbleheads of today’s media. Cronkite is still alive, so perhaps it’s not too late?
