Epic Win: Gummi Bears Cartoon

Mar. 16, 2010

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by K Hilsgen, who really just loves bears.

Those crazy gummies, bouncing here and there and everywhere. The best part of my after-school cartoon routine, next to Tale Spin. Good times, good times.

Ed note: It’s apparently Epic Win Cartoon Tuesday.

The theme music to Storybreak rocked so hard, you knew that the animations coming your way were serious business.

Epic Win: Mousterpiece Theater

Feb. 5, 2010

Submitted by Kenny O, cartoon thespian.

George Plimpton hosted this Disney parody of Masterpiece Theater. It only ran for one season, which I find incredible, because the idea of Mickey and Goofy tackling Shakespeare is an appealing one. Plus, hello, George Plimpton was hosting! An even bigger resume point for him, I’m sure, than his involvement with The Paris Review.

Epic Win: The Little Mermaid

Jan. 8, 2010

Submitted by Marcy P, poor unfortunate soul.

I believe that most of us would consider this “classic” Disney. Most of us could, upon request, sing part of at least one song from this film. What’s that I hear? A request? Well, I don’t kno—”I wanna be where the people are, I wanna see, wanna see ‘em dancin’, walkin’ around on those—whad’ya call ‘em?—Oh. Feet.” It’s true, I opted for something other than “Under the Sea.” I’m unpredictable like that. This film helped rejuvenate the Disney animated film franchise, which had been faltering (both commercially and critically) through the ’80s. And to this day, every child I know owns and watches this movie repeatedly, each time like it’s the first time.

Epic Win: The Aristocats

Jan. 5, 2010

Submitted by Bob S, aristocrat.

Though this 1970 Disney film (the first not to be supervised by Mr. Disney) was not a commercial success, it seems that many people still hold the film dear. How could you not? The playful pun of the film’s title? The drugging of adorable cartoon kittens? A kidnapping plot? Cats singing jazz in 1910 France? I like the “scales and arpeggios” scene with the piano-playing cats. Commercial success or not, I’ll take my Aristocats over Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Singing animals are not always a pleasure to watch.
