Epic Win: Grow-Your-Own Crystals Kit

Sep. 8, 2009

Submitted and Written by Mike Kennedy

i can remember when i was eight waking up each morning at 6 AM checking to see if my crystals had grown any…good times.

(Disclaimer: there’s some Engrish going on in that video.)

The best: growing your own rock candy. Now if only I could’ve grown my own Sour Patch Kids, I would’ve never left the house.

Epic Win: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Commercial

Aug. 26, 2009

Submitted by M Block

The famous ad campaign from the ’70s and ’80s that launched the candy, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups boasted “two great tastes that taste great together.” Surprisingly clever, eh? Makes you wonder if that’s how they thought to combine ham and pineapple on a Hawaiian pizza. OK, maybe it doesn’t.

Epic Win: Fruit Stripe Gum

The above ad pre-dates me a bit, but it’s a great commercial. This is the ad I remember as a kid. It’s from ‘91:

It’s interesting how an ad campaign can remain relatively the same over three decades.

Tart and chalky, Smarties were a goodie bag staple. (In Canada, they were marketed as Rockets, but were exactly the same candy.) I read that there’s a growing trend of kids smoking Smarties. Kids these days are seriously weird.

Epic Win: Candy Buttons

Candy Buttons were little sugar candies that you ate off a strip of paper. Maybe that sounds silly today, but candy is all about fun ways to get your sugar fix (Fun Dip, anyone?). Candy Buttons were an awesome treat, if you didn’t mind unintentionally eating little bits of paper.
