Epic Win: Maurice Sendak

Nov. 11, 2009

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by Johnny’s Girl, not to be confused with Jessie’s girl

Maurice Sendak, best known for the classic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are, said, as a child, he was inspired to become a writer and illustrator by Disney’s Fantasia. (Fantasia only inspired me to do drugs.) Though he’s most famous for Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak was also the illustrator for the Little Bear series.

Have you guys seen the new Where the Wild Things Are film yet? It’s fantastic. When asked if the movie is too scary for kids, Sendak told parents that they could “go to hell.” Win.

Epic Win: Disney Read Along Books

Nov. 6, 2009

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by TJ

The Disney Read Along book series taught a lot of us how to read. I loved that Tinker Bell’s chime signaled the reader to turn the page, (way better than Bob Seger… JK! LOL!).

Epic Win: Charlotte’s Web

Nov. 2, 2009

Submitted and Written by Travis S, [insert swine flu joke here]

I wasn’t sure if this submission was referring to the classic E. B. White novel or the animated musical it was adapted into. But both are wins, for sure. (We don’t talk about the 2006 live-action film.)

Epic Win: Encyclopedia Britannica Commercials

Oct. 21, 2009

Submitted by Mike K, lover of snarky voiceovers

Okay, so the kid is pretty annoying (no more annoying than the Dell guy though), but it doesn’t make these commercials any less iconic. I do think it’s funny that they try to pitch the Encyclopedia Britannica as something you’d sit down on your couch and read from cover to cover.

Epic Win: Bread and Jam for Frances

Oct. 16, 2009

bread-and-jam

Submitted by Noelle C, badger badger badger

I think we can all relate to Bread and Jam for Frances. Lots of kids go through a phase where they only want to eat one food — grilled cheese, PBJ, chicken fingers, etc. (Personally, I was a hot dog kid.) Frances only wants to eat bread and jam, so her parents let her eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. See where this lesson is going? Bread and Jam for Frances is the only kids book I know that teaches healthy eating habits.
