“None of man’s fantasies of evil can compare with the reality of Jaws.” -Jaws trailer

Jaws turned a seldom thought about creature into the stuff of nightmares. Being the first movie to be released widely instead of tested in a few theaters first, it not only turned a complex and important animal into a terrifying monster, it’s still feared after 30 years.

Now watch the actual behavior of a Great White and even though they’re mostly well-behaved, tell us that your perception of sharks based on footage from Jaws doesn’t make you terrified to wonder what it would be like in this guy’s shoes:

This movie touched every child of the 80’s whether because of fright or fascination because of the film, or anger over their parents refusal to let them watch it. Without the help of computer graphics, Jim Hensen and Brian Froud were able to create a fascinating landscape with captivating creatures and characters. The story was also rich and thought-provoking for a film targeted to children and families.

Rumor has it a sequel is set to be released in 2011 titled The Power of the Dark Crystal.

The “Poltergeist Girl” as she was most commonly known was named Heather O’Rourke. She died of congenital acute bowel obstruction at the age of 12, during a break from the filming of Poltergeist III. Before she left us though, she gave us three films of a series that haunted us throughout the 80’s (and for some people, to this day), and a handful of television appearances.

It’s such a shame when the first movie in a series is the best movie and all the one ones that follow it steadily decline in epicness. Raiders of the Lost Ark was where we learned to love Indie and then each subsequent movie was less cool than the one that came before it, until finally the travesty of Indie surviving a nuclear blast inside a refrigerator, from that movie we shall not name.
