Even though this movie had big names: Helen Reddy, Mickey Rooney, Jeff Conaway (whose next role was Kenickie in “Grease”), and Shelley Winters, it flopped at the box office. We say “whatever” to that, it’s a win to us.

The song “Candle in the Water” was nominated for an Academy Award, but lost to-get this-”You Light Up My Life.” Ouch. Here’s the much better “Candle on the Water:”

OK, it’s kind of sappy, but we would rather hear this over “You Light Up My Life” anytime.

If you liked “Labyrinth,” it’s not a stretch to say you liked this movie too. Fun facts time: when this movie came out, it was considered the most expensive film made outside of the U.S. or former Soviet Union at the time. It had a budget of $27,000,000 and was considered a flop when it was released in 1984.

The theme (the chorus is the earwormiest earworm that ever lodged in your brainmeats), was done by Limahl, who was the lead singer of this band:

That band would be Kajagoogoo, whose single “Too Shy” was an 80’s one-hit-wonder.

John Hughes was the MAN as far as 80’s movies are concerned. “Weird Science” is a bit different than Hughes’ typical boy-meets-girl high school stories: in this movie, boys BUILD girl. Who hasn’t wanted to build their perfect mate? After one too many bad dates, the idea sounds better and better, doesn’t it?

“Weird Science” also had one of the best themes ever, by the excellent Oingo Boingo:

I love this movie. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Star Wars series too, but seeing the franchise get the Mel Brooks treatment is awesome (if any of you young whippersnappers don’t know Brooks’ work, get these on your Netflix queue: “Young Frankenstein” and “Blazing Saddles.” You’re welcome.). George Lucas apparently thought so as well, since he gave his approval to the script. Maybe Mr. Lucas should have hired him to write “Revenge of the Sith.” Just sayin’.

“Spaceballs” has so many great moments it’s hard to pick a favorite, but I’m going to. LUDICROUS SPEED AHEAD!!!

“What’s the matter, Colonel Sanders, chicken?” That line never gets old.
