Epic Win: Polly Pocket Compact

Aug. 28, 2009

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by M Morris

Polly Pocket still exists, but in an entirely different form. The original Polly Pocket compact is the true nostalgic win. It was like a girl version of Mighty Max. Or was Mighty Max a boy version of Polly Pocket? Whoa, I’m going through an existential crisis now.

At least Mighty Max had a TV show — view the intro video after the jump.

140pedia’s Smurf Reproduction Contest Winner

Aug. 27, 2009

smurfetteOur friends at 140pedia have announced the winner of the Smurf Reproduction contest! The winning definition was submitted anonymously, but I’m told came from a Once Upon a Win reader. Which didn’t surprise me. You guys are epic winners.

Check out the winning definition.

Here are a few of my favorite definitions from 140pedia:

Birthday (party)

Proof your parents had sex day. Unless you’re a clone or a robot.

Animal Crossing (Alternate Reality)

A way to escape from life by being in debt to a raccoon, living in poverty, and harassing your neighbors.

My Boss (Mobius Loop)

1. Someone who complains about my poor job performance.
2. Someone who causes my poor job performance.

And if you guys are totally into the 140-character thing, Once Upon a Win is on Twitter.

Epic Win: Drinking Bird

Aug. 27, 2009

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by JP Marcantonio

As a child, I always thought the motion of the bird had something to do with perpetual motion. But as child, I WAS CLEARLY WRONG (childhood conception of physics fail). The drinking bird is actually an example of thermodynamics — like a heat engine. Duh.

Those little plastic things that clipped onto bicycle spokes and made noise – pointless but very cool.

Pointless? But they were colorful and made noise… oh, yeah, that’s a pretty good point, Catherine V.

Epic Win: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Commercial

Aug. 26, 2009

Submitted by M Block

The famous ad campaign from the ’70s and ’80s that launched the candy, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups boasted “two great tastes that taste great together.” Surprisingly clever, eh? Makes you wonder if that’s how they thought to combine ham and pineapple on a Hawaiian pizza. OK, maybe it doesn’t.
