Folgers Instant Coffee isn’t the tastiest stuff around (gets the job done, though), but this commercial jingle is pure gold. Warning: playing the above YouTube clip will get the phrase “the best part of waking up” stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

Thanks to Karl for the Folgers Decaffeinated ad, which is similar to the original but features male vocals behind the jingle. I’m not sure what it’s implying — guys can’t handle their caffeine?

And props to BB/VA for finding the Rockapella version of the Folgers ad. Rockapella, as SchlagerFuchs pointed out, were best known for the Where in the World is Carmen San Diego? theme song.

The giant parachute was a classic kindergarten/early-elementary school activity. Whether you were an athletic kid or not, this gym class game brought everyone together to share their appreciation of really large parachutes. I remember raising the parachute and sitting on the inside as it slowly collapsed. Epic nostalgia. Maybe middle school wouldn’t have been so lame if there were more giant parachutes.

The point of the game was to sneak to the refrigerator in the middle of the night. It played like a cross between Chutes and Ladders and hot potato, more of a novelty for the plastic Dad that would spring up if you pushed the alarm clock enough times.

Still, I always wondered why Daddy would be so angry if the kids got a midnight snack. Maybe the fridge was full of booze.

When I was in 5th grade, my friends and I would exchange the FIRST text messages during class with the casio Super Magic Diary. One model even had a remote control for a television, and we’d change the channel during educational videos. It had a digital filing system for names and phone numbers, and you could create portraits of your friends.

L.A. Gear sneakers were notably for one thing: they lit up. (They had other athletic wear, but nobody cares.) Inside each Light GEAR shoe was a set of red LEDs that would light up every time pressure was put on the bottom of the sole (read: every two seconds as you’re walking). Tacky now, but totally epic back in the day when people thought that L.A. was cool.
