Epic Win: Marbles

Aug. 1, 2009

Submitted by Jeff H

Marbles were a versatile toy, whether they were used for games or just collecting. Personally, I really enjoyed building marble mazes (the wood blocks were far superior to the plastic sets). What did you use marbles for as a kid?

This is also really interesting — how marbles are made.

Epic Win: Queen

Jul. 31, 2009

Submitted by Kerri M

Queen was perhaps one of the most musically versatile rock bands of all time. Led by flamboyant vocalist Freddie Mercury, the band penned a number of awesome stadium anthems (“We Will Rock You,” “We are the Champions”), multiharmony rock numbers (“Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Under Pressure”), and epic rock operas (“Bohemian Rhapsody” of course!).

Is “Bohemian Rhapdsody” the greatest song ever written? No other song has ever sounded anything like it.

Epic Win: Dangerous Playground Equipment

Jul. 31, 2009

dangerous-playground

Submitted and Written by Janine P

I miss the old days when playgrounds weren’t all made of plastic. There were so many good pieces… the searing hot metal slides, the puke-inducing merry-go-rounds, the deathly “witches hat”, and any number of variations of Really Tall Metal Thing (usually welded into cute animal shapes) that kids could (and did) frequently fall off of.

At my primary school there was one particular contraption that injured more children than average. I dont know what it was called but it looked something like a Mayflower pole. A tall metal pole with a spinning circle at the top. Attached to the circle was about six chains with smaller metal rings at the bottom. The point was to get your friends hanging onto the small rings, everybody runs real fast in the same direction around the pole, and wheeeeeee! let yourself fly! Obviously this game was less dangerous in the winter when, if you accidentally let go, you could fly off into a relatively soft snowbank instead of the gravel. Yes, gravel, none of this “rubber chips” crap that playground have today.

Epic Win: Goosebumps

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by A Barbian

R.L. Stine’s hyper-popular Goosebumps series got a lot of kids reading their first chapter books. There were 62 books published between ‘92 and ‘97, as well as a television show and video game. I remember being addicted to Goosebumps — my favorites being The Haunted Mask II and The Ghost Next Door. Wikipedia has a full list of the titles. Which was your favorite?

Update: Featured Comments

Jester sez:

WIN. SO MUCH WIN. I still -have- all of the books. I could not bring myself to get rid of them.

coyote is fuzzy yet again replied:

Never get rid of a good book.

Epic Win: VCR

VCRs are definitely a nostalgia win, but even today, you can probably find one for cheap at your local Salvation Army. Then you can buy tons of VHS tapes — they’re usually a buck or two at the thrift store or even cheaper at yard sales. Sure, the picture quality might not be nearly as good as DVDs, but who’s going to complain when you can get twenty great movies on VHS instead of one new DVD? Hit the tracking button!

Now I’m just waiting for somebody to submit “Laserdisc” to Once Upon a Win…
