Epic Win: Chuck Jones

Chuck Close

Submitted by C Gerbode

Chuck Jones was the man responsible for Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, the mastermind who brought you Bugs, Daffy, PepĂ© Le Pew, and many other classic cartoon characters. Here’s my favorite Looney Tunes bit, “The Rabbit of Seville”:

(Love the Figaro Fertilizer at the end. I will be very grateful if someone can find a better quality version!)

Epic Win: Windows 98 Defragmenter

Sep. 11, 2009

Submitted and Written by Wolfen

I know a lot of people that considers this old program a win. One could defragment a drive while looking all those colored blockies, and never get bored.

Actually, it seems pretty boring to me, but the colored blocks sure do make me long for the days when I owned a PC. Kind of.

Epic Win: Come On Eileen

I love this blurb from Wikipedia on the entry for Dexys Midnight Runners:

Dexys Midnight Runners are a British pop group with soul influences, who achieved their major success in the early to mid-1980s. They are best known for their songs “Come on Eileen” and “Geno”.

Who the heck has ever heard the song “Geno”? Dexys Midnight Runners epitomized the one-hit wonder. “Come on Eileen” is a song everyone can sing along to, yet few people can name the band. In fact, VH1 honored the song with the title of the #1 One-Hit Wonder of the ’80s.

What are your favorite one-hit wonders? (For inspiration, you can read the rest of VH1’s list.)

Epic Win: War Games

Sep. 10, 2009

Submitted by Ryan J

Shall we play a game?

This ‘83 film starred a very young Matthew Broderick as a computer hacker who accidentally triggers a U.S. military supercomputer to run a nuclear war simulation. And Broderick was only trying to download video games off the internet! War Games not only captured the spirit of the Cold War in a family friendly way, but would predict a future of nerds trying to steal games off the internet. Now let’s hope nobody gets top-secret government software from The Pirate Bay.

Also, I don’t know about you guys, but just from the name: Global Thermonuclear War > Halo.
