Epic Win: The Little Mermaid

Jan. 8, 2010

Submitted by Marcy P, poor unfortunate soul.

I believe that most of us would consider this “classic” Disney. Most of us could, upon request, sing part of at least one song from this film. What’s that I hear? A request? Well, I don’t kno—”I wanna be where the people are, I wanna see, wanna see ‘em dancin’, walkin’ around on those—whad’ya call ‘em?—Oh. Feet.” It’s true, I opted for something other than “Under the Sea.” I’m unpredictable like that. This film helped rejuvenate the Disney animated film franchise, which had been faltering (both commercially and critically) through the ’80s. And to this day, every child I know owns and watches this movie repeatedly, each time like it’s the first time.

Epic Win: Pogs

Jan. 8, 2010

win-pictures-pogs

Submitted by J Olsen, who collected milk caps before it was cool.

These circular bits of cardboard (and the thicker, heavier, plastic “slammers” also used to play the game) became all the rage in the ’90s, though similar games had been played as early as the 17th century. The gist was this: Stack your pogs up, face down, and allow your opponent to throw his slammer at the stack. If any of your pogs landed face up after the dust settled, they became his pogs (if you were playing “for keeps,” anyway). I remember these things were everywhere…for a very short amount of time. People moved on to Tamagotchis or something, leaving pogs to be remembered fondly by those of us who did most of our growing up in the ’90s.

Epic Win: Chicken Tonight

Jan. 7, 2010

Submitted by Adam D, chicken dance king.

I would hope that this jingle should make an appearance on everyone’s Favorite Jingles Ever list. I mean, it really just gets right to the point, doesn’t it? You know it’s successful when it makes an appearance on The Simpsons, as it did during the episode “Lady Bouvier’s Lover.” To the surprise of perhaps no one, the product, despite the advertisement, was not a success in the US. However, it is still sold in a few countries and was successful enough to spawn products called “Beef Tonight” and “Sausages Tonight.” I’m trying to sing “Sausages Tonight” to myself, and, I have to say, it just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

’80s Music Video Thursday: Crazy Car Drivin’ Homo sapiens

Jan. 7, 2010

Is it Thursday already?! Good thing, because that means today is—say it with me!—’80s Music Video Thursday! Please feel free to make suggestions for next week’s edition in the comments

“Homosapien” by Pete Shelley, submitted by MaryIn Boise:

I remember seeing this goofy video when I was a kid and really wishing I could have that computer in the background.

My subtext detector is going off…

“Cars” by Gary Numan, also submitted by Maryln Boise.

Some pretty snazzy special effects and tons of guyliner. Sounds like ’80s Music Video Thursday to me!

“She Drives Me Crazy” by Fine Young Cannibals.

I apologize for the falsetto. But the pillow outfit is pretty darn cool. Ultimately, I’d just like to say “You’re welcome,” because I know, 12 hours from now, this song will still be stuck in your head.

A few more from the past:

Epic Win: T-Shirt Slides

Jan. 6, 2010

t-shirt slides

Submitted by Melissa B, rhinestone cowgirl.

I wore them with my baggy t-shirts in the early-mid ’90s, and I thought they were so cool.

Cool, indeed. Like stylish, bejeweled “No Smoking” signs! I suppose they look a little less like that when worn. Still, I’m a sucker for rhinestones! Ah, the fashion of the ’90s.
