Epic Win: The Pontiac GTO

Jan. 16, 2010

pontiac gto

Submitted by Kathy M, hard-top convertible.

The Pontiac GTO was the ultimate American muscle car. Pontiac made the model from 1964-1974, but most “goat” fans view the 1964-70 models as the classics.

My dad bought a new GTO in 1966 (the color and style in the photo) to assuage his midlife crisis. This model was actually called a “hard-top convertible” because there was no vertical beam separating the front and back windows; but the top didn’t actually come off. It did come in a standard convertible (with rag-top) as well.

Today a restored 1966 GTO fetches around $40,000-$50,000 at auction.

Though my sister and I were very young when my folks owned this car, we have many fond memories of it. My dad regretted—literally to his dying day—ever trading in his GTO.

Epic Win: TV Trays

tv trays

Submitted by Kenny O, whose favorite combination was meatloaf + The Love Boat:

Remember these metal TV trays that kids used to eat grilled cheese sandwiches on while watching Pinwheel or The A-Team after school?

Yes, yes I do remember them. My mother owned a fine set with a country home-ish floral design. They folded out, like mini-tables. I believe she has them stacked up in the back of a closet somewhere. Classy nostalgia!

Epic Win: Special Folded Notes

Jan. 15, 2010

special folded notes

Submitted by Rachel, circle “yes” if you like me, circle “no” if you don’t:

I have 2 shoe boxes full of these from middle school and the beginning of high school. They’re maybe not specifically ’90s, but there is still something nostalgic about them. Great memories from high school!

Sadly, I was the only one of my friends who knew how to do cool folds. I spent time and effort turning my notes into artwork, and all I got in return was a piece of paper folded into eighths.

Epic Win: Sony PlayStation

Jan. 14, 2010

sony playstation

Submitted by Chris T, epic gamer.

This classic video game console was released in 1994 (1995 in the United States and Europe). It was not the first console to utilize optical disc format, but it was the first successful model to do so. It was manufactured for 11 years. Of course, by now we’ve been through PlayStation 2 and are currently using PlayStation 3, but the original is the true nostalgic win. Let us know in the comments what your favorite PlayStation games were!

’80s Music Video Thursday: ’80s Movie Edition

Jan. 14, 2010

Happy ’80s Music Video Thursday! Today we take our lesson from the chapter “Songs From ’80s Movies.” Oh, there are some classics. I really, really wanted to post Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings”—best karaoke song ever!—but, unfortunately, I couldn’t find a good version on the interwebs. What’s your favorite ’80s movie anthem? And, as always, please leave suggestions for more ’80s music videos in the comments.

“Against All Odds” by Phil Collins, from the movie Against All Odds. Submitted by QuoteMan:

Phil Colins?! MOVIE SONG?!?! I can already smell the 80’s on this one!

Yeah, I smell it, too. Smells a little like…musty old tears. How many crying scenes are in this movie?!

“Take My Breath Away” by Berlin, from the movie Top Gun.

Place your bets: How many weddings across the globe have played this song during the traditional first dance? Just be thankful I didn’t post the Jessica Simpson remake.

“Footloose” by Kenny Loggins, from the movie Footloose.

My Sunday shoes are officially kicked off, and…I actually don’t know any of the other lyrics. That’s not gonna stop me from dancing!
