Epic Win: Walter Cronkite

Apr. 22, 2009

once upon a win

Walter Cronkite joined CBS in 1962, became the first half-hour long nightly news anchor in September of 1963, informed us of Kennedy’s assassination in November of 1963, and from there, quickly became “a comfortable old shoe” to the American public (as he aptly put it in 1981 when he retired).

Below is a clip of Cronkite announcing President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. We would greatly prefer a return to this, as opposed to the prancing, shouting bobbleheads of today’s media. Cronkite is still alive, so perhaps it’s not too late?

Epic Win: Scooby Doo

Apr. 21, 2009

once upon a win

Zoinks! It’s Scooby Doo on the front page! Epic win!

How did a cartoon about a nerd, a cheerleader, a jock and two stoners (one being a talking dog), ever get on the air? We don’t know, but someday we’d love to shake the hand of the guy who originally greenlighted Scooby Doo.

The premise of the show was so predictable and unvaried from episode to episode but it was so awesome in its simplicity. “…And I would have gotten away with it too if it weren’t for you meddling kids!”

Epic Win: DEVO

“Crack that whip!”

Whether you like Devo or not, it’s impossible not to have the tune stuck in your head right now as you read this. When a problem comes along, we know what to do. We also know what to do when something’s going wrong or the cream is about to sit out too long.

Epic Win: Clerks

Apr. 21, 2009

Clerks came out at a time when all of the movies were so cookie-cutter and stale and it was like a giant breath of fresh air. Nobody expected to walk out of their neighborhood video store with a movie containing scenes like the 37 dicks dialogue, Randall’s Happy Scrappy scene, and the Chiclets gum guy, not to mention one of the most epic duo’s in film history: Jay & Silent Bob.
Dante and Randall said all of the things that we were too afraid to say, and they said it so bluntly that we propelled a comic book nerd’s debut project into the annals of cult film history.

Caution: These scenes are definitely NSFW (Not Safe For Work). Headphones recommended.

Quite possibly the best childhood movie of all times. If you intend on refuting my claim, be prepared to tell me why I’m wrong and present your case for the movie YOU think deserves the title. Email it to us at onceuponawin@gmail.com.
