Epic Win: Candy Land

Mar. 16, 2009

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by B Myers

For such a simple game, Candy Land was, and is, an incredible amount of fun for young kids. As an added bonus it taught us how to recognize colors and more complex objects (remember the cards with the candy canes and chocolate bars on them?).
More importantly though, Candy Land taught us that life sucks and just isn’t fair. No amount of skill or maneuvering (unless you count the cheating kind) could save you from getting within steps of the end of the game and then get the plum card sending you back almost to the very beginning. Vice versa, early on your opponent would also get the Queen Frostine card and be catapulted within a few moves from the end of the game.

Oh look, it’s the angry board gamers from the Battleship post demonstrating an example of how we all felt, being at the mercy of fate in Candy Land:

Once Upon A Win

John Candy was in so many of the movies that shaped our childhood that we don’t even know where to begin. A visit to his IMDb page reveals a plethora of movies that we loved.
He touched our funny bones in so many ways we’re not even going to tell you which moments are our favorites. Instead, we’ll post a few clips we found, and encourage you to tell us which John Candy moments (not limited to the clips provided) were your favorites.

Epic Win: Three’s Company

Ahhh, the good ol’ days when Suzanne Somers was smokin’ hot, John Ritter was still alive, and a sitcom about three swingers living together, thinly veiled as platonic roommates and neighbors, was totally acceptable for afternoon and prime time television.
And who could forget the theme song? “Come and knock on our door….. We’ve been waiting for you……”

Here are some blooper reels for your viewing pleasure:

Epic Win: Friendship Bracelets

Once Upon A Win

It’s a shame that crafting isn’t as popular among children anymore. A theme that we’re starting to recognize amongst our epic wins are that toys for children in the past required imagination and creation, versus the video games and action figures of modern times. Friendship Bracelets are a prime example of something very simple that also requires a large amount of imagination and craftsmanship. If you still have a friendship bracelet, post a picture in the comments. We’d love to see all of the beautiful examples out there.

If you don’t have one, perhaps you can make one to show off for us.

“For you, not them.” Remember those terrible commercials? Just in case you don’t remember, here’s the one with the lunch lady and gym teacher:

Maybe the reason we can’t understand how this compelled us to buy a 6-foot strip of mostly tasteless chewing gum is because we have become “them”.
