Epic Win: Final Fantasy

Apr. 10, 2009

once upon a win

22 years ago Square Enix opened our eyes to the world of video game RPGs with Final Fantasy. It was slow and tedious, but it was ours and we loved it. We would spend hours wandering the woods killing imps, dragons, giants and other beasts on our quest for glory and to defeat the mysterious darkness that covered the land. We could change our character’s names, customize which combination of characters we were to play with, and later in the grade, upgrade them into ultimate wizards, warriors, and black belts.

Epic Win: Zoobooks

Apr. 9, 2009

once upon a win

Zoobooks was that magazine that you could trade your “fundraising points” for to get a subscription to if you raised so much for whatever school fundraiser you were doing. Most kids inevitably skipped over the subscription for a bag of parachute army men or some other kitsch, but there were a few of us that actually wanted to read about elephants and rattlesnakes. Once you were done reading them, the pages often became wall decorations or essential elements in craft projects too.

Epic Win: Unsolved Mysteries

Apr. 9, 2009

once upon a win

Submitted by Valerie B

Unsolved Mysteries was so epic because it featured reenactments of real crimes, ghost stories, unexplainable feats, etc., and it had spooky music that hooked you. It was also great at highlighting the cleverness and utter-stupidity of criminals at the same time. We’ll never forget the episode highlighting the cyber-criminal Kevin Poulsen and how he had been hiding from the FBI and simultaneously wire-tapping them at the same time, but then got caught by a store night manager.

Robert Stack’s voice was also uber-hypnotic.

Epic Win: Short Circuit

Long before Wall-E, there was Johnny Five. Johnny Five is alive! And Steve Guttenberg! Any movie is better with The Gutt in it. And even though he totally played on racial stereotypes, The Gutt’s sidekick was hilarious!

Epic Win: The Last Unicorn

The Last Unicorn was an awesomely mature animated film. It also had a star-studded cast for the 1980’s. Mia Farrow, Jeff Bridges, Alan Arkin, and Angela Lansbury to name a few. The red bull was epic and really ignited our imaginations. It also opened the door for many of us to become fans of Hayao Miyazaki, since shortly after finishing this film most of the animators joined his company.
