Epic Win: AMC Eagle

Wood paneling FTW! You really can’t beat it. The AMC Eagle was introduced in 1979 and remained on the market until 1988. They really are a thing to behold in a kitschy sort of way. How about you guys? Did any of you take a hot date out on a Friday night in one of these bad boys?

Yes, These were great. My Dad had one. These were all wheel drive! and the first mass produced passenger car with this feature. I believe they took the AMC Concord body on and put it on a Jeep frame or something like that.
I always wanted one of these! A four-wheel drive station wagon, what I perfect idea! I could take all of my friends on adventures, and it wasn’t a giant SUV. How practical!
Unfortunately, during it’s run, I never had the dough to get a new one to replace my ol’ beetle. Eventually I got a sweet mid-size 4X4 Quad Cab truck, . . . but I still dream of a brand new AMC Eagle, with the woody look . . .
I think my parents had this car…
My parentys had one. I remember sleeping in the trunk on long road trips. Best times ever.
When people think its cool to put Wood paneling on their PT Cruisers, I think a piece of my childhood dies.
Eh. I kinda like it, especially when they shave the front bumper, extend the grille, and put chrome smoothie wheels on it.
Also, any time I see a Ford Flex, all I can think about is how it’d look with 70’s/80’s wood paneling.
It would be cool to put REAL wood paneling on a PT Cruiser, but the painted-on stuff is just nasty.
For sheer kitsch, the AMC Jeep Eagle can’t hold a candle to the Gremlin and Pacer.
I almost bought one of these two years ago, but I had nowhere to put it
Nothing like a wood-paneled wagon. The ladies love it.
Also, totally agree that PT Cruisers are awful, and fake wood paneling just makes it worse.
I prefer the Family Truckster

I had two of these. Awesome cars in the snow.
The first year or two of production, they were full-time 4wd. Then AMC put in a selectable transfer case, but you had to stop the vehicle to shift into 4wd. The final couple of years, they had a shift-on-the-fly transfer case.
A really nice 4.2L I-6 engine, comfortable seats (one of mine had leather seats with the power option), seating for the whole family and the dog. Too bad Chrysler killed them off before the sport-ute craze hit. They would have sold tons of them.
(And to Subaru – and their “first sport utility wagon” claim – PFFFFT! The Eagle was first!)
I always wanted one of these…in High School in the 90’s it was the car I wanted to get! Thought it was so raaaddddd!!!
I learned to drive on an AMC Hornet with the stick shift on the steering column. Oy!
A neighbor of mine had one of these in the early 90’s. It had a million miles on it and he was always fixing something on it.
I had an ‘85 AMC Eagle when I was a senior in high school. I special ordered mudgrip tires to fit it. It did pretty well in the mud. I wasn’t allowed to park in my parents driveway if the car was muddy. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o127/the_matneys/My%20Vehicles/ae89.jpg
I added a cb antenna, overhead air horns, an eagle hood ornament that the eyes lit up with the head lights, and KC 100 watt off road light on the front bumper. One of my favorite cars.
