Epic Win: Sony PlayStation

sony playstation

Submitted by Chris T, epic gamer.

This classic video game console was released in 1994 (1995 in the United States and Europe). It was not the first console to utilize optical disc format, but it was the first successful model to do so. It was manufactured for 11 years. Of course, by now we’ve been through PlayStation 2 and are currently using PlayStation 3, but the original is the true nostalgic win. Let us know in the comments what your favorite PlayStation games were!

» 181 Blasts From The Past

  1. TVDK says:

    Definitely Final Fantasy VII

  2. Raykun says:

I still use my PS (that I bought in about 2001), and my game of choice is Monster Rancher 2

  3. Red says:

Tekken 2! I loved fighting as Jun Kazama and Yoshimitsu.

  4. Echou, the Supreme Overlord of the deepest spot of Hell. Also a LOL builder. says:

    Crash Bandicoot. Nuff’ said.

  5. Sano says:

I played Rugrats on that console when I was little. That was an awesome game

  6. Jack D says:

    Thrill Kill, definitely

  7. Sandbullet says:

    Tenchu Stealth Assassins

  8. Vinny says:

Metal gear solid is the only game i bought for the original PS. I still have my copy from all those years ago…

  9. abyss2047 says:

Legend of the Dragoon, the way it styled its combat system was so intuitive. And I swear to this day when I play it, I’m playing something that could have easily came out in the early PlayStation 2 days.

    • zxsurferboy says:

Finally! Someone else who’s heard of this game!

I agree, it was most definitely the best game for the PS.

    • ChronoNumberXIII says:

      Hell Yeah Legend of Dragoon!!
I still play it on my Playstation.

    • Katie says:

That’s my favourite game too! I bought it back shortly after it first came out 2000/2001 and I’m still playing it. I can’t count how many times I’ve finished it, but each time I start a new game, it’s still fresh and fun. =D

  10. Xanthera says:

The original Spyro The Dragon and Crash Bandicoot games, and Final Fantasy IX. In fact, even now, FF9 is still my favorite game of all time. <3

  11. Spence says:

Definitely the Crash Bandicoot series and the Tony Hawk series. Still play them on my PS2.

  12. bunny says:

    Galerians, and FF7 & FF8 <3

Whoever downvoted this win should be ashamed of themselves.

  13. AmandaH says:

Spyro the Dragon. One of only two games I’ve ever finished.

    • Halmotors says:

The original Spyro the Dragon was the first full game I ever owned. Previously I had it on a Playstation Underground demo disc, and I played the HELL out of it, so finally my parents bought me the full game. To this day, it’s one of my favorite games, and the fact that Peewee Herman man Paul Reubens voiced Spyro still makes me giggle.

  14. OlbrieN says:

Final Fantasy IX, it is also my favorite game =)
Also I liked Final fantasy VII. Tekken 3 was also a great game.

  15. Spiff says:

    Spyro and Crash!!

Metal Gear Solid is still the only game I know that’s on TWO disks. Love that game :P

    And Coolboarders!

    • OneCGuy says:

Resident evil 2 was 2 disks. Final fantasy IX was 4 discs. There were quite a few like this actually, lots of RPGs.

  16. Jon says:

No mentions of Soul Reaver? That game was awesome.

Final Fantasy VII of course … they’re STILL trying to make a final fantasy game as awesome as 7, and have yet to succeed.

  17. Kreed says:

Lunar Silver Star Story Complete was my favorite (though I know it’s not the original).

    And, of course, FFVII

  18. Erm says:

Gauntlet: Legends. Gauntlet: Dark Legacy for the PS2. I hope that whatever they release for the PS3 will follow the same basic formula.

Also loved Twisted Metal, and FFVII through FFIX. There was a game called “Pigs of War” that was a real hoot. I *wanted* to play Carnage Heart; That particular game was right up my alley. Never got my hands on it, though.

  19. spazzy says:

i had this tetris game where a you had to save this little professor by making an opening in the bottom line.
my favorite though was a weird pacman game where he had legs and could walk around and bounce swim and do just about anything

    • FAIL-IEN says:

The Pac-Man game you’re reffering to is called Pac-Man World. It was to commemorate the 20th or 25th anniversary of Pac-Man. I played it, loved it. Worst game I played: Bust-A-Groove. That f’ing game was so so flawed, you were lucky you won anything. Albeit it had some good music.

  20. Edmund says:

Favourite game? ehhh… FF 7 or 9. Not sure. Crash Team Racing was a lot of fun too.

Currently playing through FF9 and Vagrant Story.

I still have all my original PSX library, with the exception of the MISSING XENOGEARS DISC 2! RRRRAWWWWRRRR!!!

    • FAIL-IEN says:

He-hey! Xenogears! I haven’t heard any mention of the game in this comment section yet! I loved the Mech fights, although you could never go back and fight your Mechs at a later time. Plus, I loved that part where that dude and that girl were both nude. It was sometime towards the end of the game. I loved Xenosaga, but that had no direct relation to Xenogears.

    • argentlupus says:

I feel your pain Edmund…I too am missing disc two of xenogears. I miss Elly….

      • argentlupus says:

oh and Fail-Ien did you notice the young girl in Xenosaga (Nephilim) look like a young Elly? Also if you do some of the side quests in Xenosaga 3 you would have seen a certain nanotechnological gril being made.

      • Edmund says:

I even bought the game twice, because I lost disc 2 once before. So now I have 2 disc 1s. Anyone have 2 disc 2s? I’ll trade you, lol.

    • Jesse Maison says:

What’s with FFIX? I thought it was the runt of the PS era Final Fantasies, but judging from the comments, everyone seems to like it almost as much as VII. IX IMHO had the worst storyline, and was rather bland. VIII by far had the worst gameplay.

      • Edmund says:

FFVII is a very dark game. While it is a superb plot, the characters are difficult to relate to. The game was masterfully executed, despite the fact that it was a pioneer of sorts. FFIX, on the other hand, while not as thought provoking of a storyline, seems to have much more human characters (everyone knows a “Steiner”, lol). Like I posted earlier, it is hard to pick which of these is better. Both are very fun, very polished games, but I think personal preference plays a big role here, because while similar on many fronts, they differ substantially in interesting ways.

  21. FAIL-IEN says:

OMG Yes! I still have mine with an Action Replay (not like the Action Replays you see today) which I used to play an imported copy Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout (The hardest-to-find and most expensive game for the PS, BTW) and various imported games. I especially loved when they came out with the PSOne and had the LCD screen option to make the console fully portable, years before the mention of the PSP.

  22. Koolboy says:

oh my teh best console ive had i will allways remember Spyro and gran turismo 2 i had a slim but now it just colects dust

  23. PSGamer says:

Crash series, Spyro series, Metal Gear Solid, FF VII, Syndicate Wars…There are so many…

  24. Matrix says:

    #1 SNES, #2 NES, #3 PSX

  25. Michael says:

Castlevania – Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy VII & Legacy of Kain – Soul Reaver.

    • Adamas says:

SOTN FTW! The music! and the Resident Evil lvl voice acting! Perfecto!

    • Snark says:

OMG yes. I fell in love Soul Reaver on the Dreamcast, but on PSX, Symphony of the Night was pure, pure win.

      Someone post the Dreamcast too!

Also, totally thumbs-up mention to Metal Gear Solid and Legend of Dragoon.

  26. Nectareal says:

    bushido blade!

  27. tobyh says:

    Ah, my first love

  28. DiabloNeonX says:

Street Fighter Alpha 3, Spider-Man, Gran Turismo 2, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Epic wins.

  29. Lamion says:

Xenogears, FF VII of course, and Azure Dreams. Also the second Twisted Metal.

  30. PsykoticPsi says:

ff7, WILD A.R.M.S (such a good game!!), Legend of Legaia, the ps1 had the BEST rpgs for, and now they still have a tuff time beating them.

  31. Lisandra says:

wow i think i still have this somewhere lol
i know i have the controllers the games i remember most from Playstation
    is Spyro !! :D

  32. BittyCole56 says:

I agree with a lot of you, Crash Bandicoot. Original was my favorite, but the rest were awesome too :)

  33. Mike says:

The first 3 Spyro games FTW.

  34. Daniel says:

Gran Turismo 1&2, Metal Gear solid, Tekken and FFVII.

  35. segaLover says:

Sega cd (an attatchment to the sega genisis) was the first to use the optical disk format. The first to successfully use the format was sega saturn released just prior to the ps, could be argued to be the first successful o-d format platform. Sega was also first to release a platform with internet gameplay capabilities. While both systems may not have been the “best” sega deffinatly set the stage for some of the technologies we take for granted today.

    • SDFSADF says:

Turbo-CD for the Turbo Grafx 16 was the first CD console in the US.

    • Jesse Maison says:

I wouldn’t call the Sega Saturn Successful, seeing as how it didn’t even last two years. Sega makes good games, but bad consoles.

      • Paranoimia says:

Resident Evil. Epic game, and scary as hell.

I remember playing at night, with the sound up and pumped through my hi-fi. Walking along a silent corridor, when those f#&king zombie dogs crashed through the window, and I almost crapped myself. And I was in my mid-20s at the time!

      • tahrey says:

It was a good machine, just launched at entirely the wrong time as they misjudged the market – and made a console that was truly excellent at 2D titles, but only made a passing stab at 3D…. just when 3D gaming in the arcades and on the Jaguar, PSX – and PC – was coming to the fore. It’s very well regarded for StreetFighter-esque games and others that are more suited to its capabilities (even the PSX isn’t as good for it – more limited resolution and poorer sprite handling; just witness it trying to do a properly readable screen of text).

However I think the Phillips CD-i probably counts as the first optical disc console as it had some – very poor! – gaming ability. MegaCD, TG and JagCD were somewhat half-assed bandwagon jumps with hardware that couldn’t really make the best of it, much like the puzzling CDROM units released for old 16-bit computers. 3DO (everyone forgets that!), Saturn and PSX (with quite a long history given that it had its origins in an aborted SNES CD add-on), along with early multimedia PCs (as a fairly modest 486 with a 4x drive could run rings around any of them) were the first true contenders.

  36. Nova says:

    Crash Bandicoot! <3

  37. Katie says:

All the Spyro games for the PS were epic wins. Crash Bandicoot series wins as well. Actually, I just bought a copy of Crash Bandicoot: Warped from eBay as it is such an awesome game.

Other wins: Legend of Dragoon, FFVII and FFIV, Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger.

I also somewhat enjoyed Darkstone, but found some parts to be really frustrating.

  38. Cecona says:

I remember having this and playing this one spice girl game I had on it ALL THE TIME.

  39. Bergerton says:

crash bandicoot 3! loved the chase levels

  40. Ashley says:

    SPYRO!!!

  41. Hannah_SGTC says:

    spyro, rugrats, crash bandicoot :)
    i loved my PS

  42. Killer Kwean says:

OMG! I LOVED AND STILL LOVE ALL THE ORIGIONAL CRASH BANDICOOT GAMES! 1, 2 AND 3. I’M 18 AND REMEMBER HOW MUSCH FUN I HAD PLAYING AND BEATING ALL THESE GAMES AS A CHILD! HA HA! I WAS AN EPIC GAMER! MOST GAMES NOW SUCK COMPARED TO THE ONES I GREW UP WITH. LIKE THE ORIGIONAL RE GAMES. LOL.

  43. Icanhascheezburgernewbie says:

The original Crash and Spyro trilogy, Crash Team Racing, Twisted Metal II, and MediEvil. Anyone who claims to be a Playstation 1 fan needs to have at least one of these games, or else they can kindly GTHO.

  44. Tesh Arkash says:

    Top 5!

    1. Legend of The Dragoon
    2. Legend of Legaia
    3. Metal Gear Solid
    4. Final Fantasy 9
    5. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

  45. Jessory says:

    Resident Evil Series!

  46. KiKiDi27 says:

    FF7. Best. Game. Ever.

  47. BroVinny says:

    Silent Hill!

  48. thelittlewitch says:

mines still working, hooked up, and i completed Final Fantasy VII this afternoon. Went back to it with too much free time! Sigh

  49. Billy says:

can i just say oddworld 1 and 2,jersey devil, tomba, medievil, and crash bandicoot games are my favs

  50. Nekuyo says:

I was terribly fond of Rayman. Mostly because I was too little to play games efficiently (still can’t play Super Mario, I’m just not good a platform games) so it was mostly watching my brother play games. And I was fond of Rayman’s design and colorful nature.

  51. Pi-Rat says:

    My PS favorites:
    FF7
Duke Nukem 3D and Time to Kill
    Spyro
    Coolboarders 2
    Gex: Enter the Gecko
    Crash Bandicoot 1-3
    Tekken 2
    Alien Trilogy
    Nightmare Creatures

I stayed up many, many nights finishing these games.

    • Chris says:

Duke Nukem 3D was fun, but the Playstation version was often seen as the worst port of the game. If you can still find it, the PC version is so much better.

  52. hoshi says:

super puzzle fighter 2 turbo. ^_^ i played it with a group of friends during a week’s vacation. massively addictive.

  53. Mandy says:

Cool Boarders 2 and Jet Moto 2

  54. Obi-Watt Kenobi says:

Ape Escape is where it was at. First game to fully take advantage of the dual analog control. Though the sequels were lacking the original was total win in my book.

    • michael says:

APE ESCAPE!! woot another one i loved to play, never finished it though, im stuck outside the skyscraper… dont bother guiding me it has since lost its luster

      • Obi-Watt Kenobi says:

Yeah… I think I remember that part. It has been a while since I last played it and it got way harder as you went, but I did finish it because I’m like that when it comes to video games.

    • Meep says:

I had a demo disc for that one! :D
It was hard to figure out at first, but a lot of fun once you got the hang of the analog controls.

      • Obi-Watt Kenobi says:

The only reason why I bought the game was because of the demo disc. Ingenious marketing if you ask me.

  55. Zero says:

Oh god. So much win. I got this console because we won it in a raffle that my local grocery store was having. My favorite games? Crash Bandicoot Warped; Spyro 1 & 2; Digimon World 1, 2, and 3; Azure Dreams; Final Fantasy 9; Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2

  56. Someone says:

Legend of Dragoon, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, and Metal Gear Solid.
(Other people remember LoD and Spyro, yay! :D )

  57. ferder says:

So many great games, and such a great system.

I love my first model system, with a built in mod chip opened up so many games for me.

  58. michael says:

    oddworld abes exodus
    legend of the dragoon
    spyro, all of them
    twisted metal 3
    tiny tank
    metal gear
those are the ones im playing recently, please dont ask me to list the ones i own, not enough space

  59. Eddie says:

Tenchu: Stealth Assassain and a game I haven’t seen mentioned yet, Sheep Raider!

  60. AllMighty says:

No doubt – Twisted metal and Tekken`s. Could play them all day long.

  61. wombat says:

    Theme Park
    Theme Hospital
    Civilization II
    Casper
    Abe’s Oddysee
    Tombi

They don’t make ‘em like they used to!

  62. Tilt says:

    Oh, such beautiful wastet time…

    Medal of Honor
    Alien Trilogy
    Doom I + II
    Ace Combat II + III
    Gunship

  63. Laughkangaroo says:

The coolest thing about the original console (1000 series, 1001 North America) is that they had a wonderful d-a converter and discrete audio outputs. They sound very good as a stand alone CD player and can easily be modified to embarrass many higher end CD players. And Blasto was the game of choice in my house as Phil Hartman did the voiceover for the character. (A win on it’s own)

    • Miroku says:

I got one model that I believe is a developers one. It’s able to play PS1 games that where burned onto a a CD-R, as well as imports.

I got it from a yard sale many years ago for $20

      • tahrey says:

Might just be a regular one with a mod chip in it… the system kind of pioneered the whole modding idea – sadly for pirating purposes, as the Action Replay et al already existed for other adjustments. Very handy though if you’re a bored teen with very little money but access to the net, a burner and some blank discs… got to see a good few classic titles that would either have been financially out of reach or just never reached our shores because of it.
(And once I had a decent income, and the modded console died, was able to get legit copies of the most worthwhile ones)

  64. Janlking says:

Any of the Spyro the Dragon games!

  65. ShikonNeko says:

    Suikoden, totally.

  66. DJ says:

    Legend of Dragoon
    Final Fantasy 7-9
    Medieval
    The Next Tetris
    Twisted Metal 2
And Dune 2000, the first (and still my favorite) RTS that I ever owned.

  67. HeidiKaye says:

    Rival Schools!
My recipe for a fun afternoon? A bunch of theater geeks, Rival Schools, and the rule that you’re not allowed to figure out the buttons. Add caffeine and sugar, and you’ve got some full-on flailing action. Good times!

  68. Melissa says:

I never owned one but my dad’s friends did and they had this demo disc that I would play every time I went over and I only ever really played two games one was Toomba and the other was this one that was in Japanese, so I never knew what I was reading, but you were like a dog policeman or something on this floating island trying to capture all these evil cats I always found it really fun.

  69. Jimmy says:

I played Twisted Metal II and the Vigilante 8 games for hours on end. Something about vehicular carnage gets me every time! That front loader in Twisted Metal II was always the best.

  70. Allison says:

    I loved Parappa the Rapper!
“Kick, punch. It’s all in the mind….”

  71. username says:

    Warhawk FTW!

  72. omgwin says:

    Spyro games <33

  73. Hangtime says:

Tecmo’s Deception series. I am still torn between the first two in the series. I loved the passive combat (trap) system.

  74. ihaaa says:

    - Driver II
    - Blasto
    - Crash Bandicoot 1 and 3
    - Robo Pit
    - Ridge Racer I

  75. Meep says:

Spyro games were most definitely the best of all.

Heck, I still play the originals today. Even with the less-than-perfect graphics.

    • Meep says:

Crash came in a close second though. CTR was the best of those.
(Whoo two-player! Too bad you had to have an adapter for more than that though…)

The new Crash games they’ve come out with rot. :(

  76. dotdotdot says:

What an epic fail. The worst load times of any of the major systems and Sony has never had a single game on any of the 3 systems they made that I have found even slightly enjoyable.

Nintendo has multiple franchises that live on and continue to make the best game for any console. The PS1 was a huge fail, I don’t care what the sales were on this pile of garbage.

    • Edmund says:

      *passes troll a tissue*

There there, dotdotdot. No need to cry. Reality isn’t so harsh that you need to reject it so completely.

      • michaelab says:

never thought id see a nintendo troll, usually you guys are so passive aggressive. its the xbox kids you gotta look out for

    • tahrey says:

Hi there and welcome to the outside world, dot^3! Was it nice under that rock of yours?

Tell you what, get yourself a PSX emulator, and start torrenting a few high-rated old games (or hit up thrift stores and the like). If after, say, 10 of those you STILL aren’t having fun, and you just can’t shake that bitter taste in your mouth, I’ll buy the console and the games off you myself at cost price. (Mine recently died after almost 15 years of faithful service).

And I’ll try to do similar with the N64… though I do like Goldeneye and Zelda already.

By multiple franchises that live on, by the way, are you referring to the seemingly endless re-releases of Super Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and so forth that seem to be holding the company’s output in some kind of wierd, stagnant, time-locked loop, into which no truly new and innovative titles seem allowed to penetrate? It’s even happening to the hardware now… was not the Wii a slight buffing of the GC to double (and only double) the graphics power, allowing it to use full-size discs, and adding all those funky but somehow never-quite-working-correctly peripherals? (Dunno about you but Wii bowling irritates the crap out of me thanks to the innaccurate tracking)

  77. meow says:

    Speed Freaks! ^D

  78. The Admiral says:

Is Lara Croft so easily forgotten?

The first PS game I saw was one of the Mortal Kombats and I remember being absolutely FLOORED at the graphics. And the geysers of blood.

  79. Doragon Shinzui says:

Threads of Fate. Easily the most fun game I’ve ever played on the PSone.
    God, I loved that game…

  80. icrycry says:

i almost killed my mother when she sold ours at a garage sale for 5 dollars.

  81. Flashley630 says:

Spyro games, Driver II, CIRCUIT BREAKERS!!!!! lol, Rayman and does anyone else own championship bass? That game still amuses me for hours with it’s “riveting” game play of nothing exciting happening ever. It’s my fave game though lol.

  82. PlutoniumBoss says:

  83. Devin says:

well, i got the playstation when i was like 4 years old and i always played the Namco Muesem game. and i would always go and play Galaga. i love that game. oh, and just about every rugrats game that ever came out. LOLZ

    • tahrey says:

bloody hell how young are you? are you allowed on the internet by yourself or did you sneak past your parents?

  84. Dexaan says:

FFVII, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid, and Tony Hawk (the second one is still the best) got a lot of my playtime.

  85. Bubbahyde90 says:

I’m a real big RPGer so, Legand of Dragoon, Vandal Hearts, all Wild Arms, all Final Fantasy’s, Persona, and belive it or not the dance game Bust-a-Groove.

  86. GLfan says:

Hot Wheels Turbo Racing! Not the best graphics or anything, but we had more fun with that game than anything before or since! Still play it sometimes, too. The first Toy Story game was awesome, too.

  87. psdfe says:

    FFVII and IX
    Spyro
    Crash Bandicoot
    Twisted Metal
    Jet Moto
TOMBA and TOMBA 2!!! <great games!!

  88. :O N64 whooped it.
Sure, it had disc, FF series, tons o’ stuff, but nothing was really attractive to me.
    N64ever (slightly) SMS>Atari 7800
SNES> (slightly)Genesis>Turbografx (it’s not bad, just a lack of good games in NA and no release in PAL regions crippled it)
N64> (of course, why not? When people saw it’s controller, they were like, WTH? they were used to the PS Pad. F’ I could go back in time, I’d explain that the system would go on to be a legend, and cause it’s TRIUMPH over PS! Mwahaha.)Sega Saturn> Atari Jaguar (that’s right, folks, even though it was only available in one city for a limited time, does that make it any worse than PS? Nope.) >PS (curse the SONY logo on it. Curses.)
Dreamcast(slightly)>Gamecube>PS2 (the other two had more graphics power, straight and simple as that. As for the more polygons myth, it’s slightly true, but the Gamecube lets you move your polygons, while the PS2 must regenerate)>Xbox(it’s fatter than a VCR, get over this hunk ‘o dick)
    PS3>(slightly)Wii>360

    • Whoops, heh. N64ever (slightly) SMS> a7800 was supposed to be NES(slightly)>SMS> A7800. hehe.

      • tahrey says:

NES > SMS? Blasphemy. You’re only saying that so the braying hounds of internet peer pressure don’t rip you apart from even the tiniest slight against TEH BEST GAEMZ CONSOLE EVAR!!!!1

Face it, the NES was pretty awful, didn’t even have a full colour pallete, was obstinately sprite/tile based to the point that you literally couldn’t display a full screen bitmap, the sound was screechy, and the reliability was awful. OK, it’s got a couple more buttons on the pad than the Sega, true, but most other consoles and computers only used one or two on their joysticks anyway – and Nintendo only used game pads because they were cheaper to make than sticks. And from what I’ve seen of the extensive game catalogue thanks to the miracle of emulation, most of the titles were pretty rotten. Yes there were a few diamonds like SMB, Metroid, Castlevania, Final Fantasy (debatable… the first one was ugly) and – EVENTUALLY (as in >5 years after launch) Kirby, but the rest of them…. ugh. The Sega System 3 is probably a fairer comparison. Though they do both crap on the 7800, which is a bit of a joke system. Atari were certainly announcing their intent to go into “plain” computers with that one.

(That’s not to say anything against the SNES, though – an excellent machine only let down by general twee-ness, narrow horizontal resolution, and absolutely shocking retail prices for its games)

Whereas a lot of the games on the Master System were slightly cut down ports of Genesis (or pre Gen launch, games of that class) titles. It had crap as well, but quite a bit more goodness to choose from (and I’d rather play the built-in Alex Kidd than a lot of NES games). Plus the benefit of full spectrum and more flexible graphics and a nicer Yamaha sound chip (with FM in some cases).

I’m probably very biased because I had both a GameGear and then, many years later, an SMS (plus an Atari ST which had roughly similar AV capabilities, but a much better CPU… and a SNES-like, 5 player version of Bomberman that came on floppy disk and therefore DIDN’T cost what would be the equivalent of a week’s wages today). But I had relatives with a SNES and a NES, and though we found decent enough diversion playing on those with them, I was never tempted to sink my pocket money savings into a Nintendo instead. The stuff just wasn’t good enough to attract my meagre troth.

Anyway let’s look at the rest :)

SNES > Genesis > Turbografix ……. If we ignore the money aspect, then can’t really argue. We never even saw the latter one in the UK, it was that brilliant and successful 9_9

N64 > Saturn > Jaguar … well duh. The jag had slightly better 3D than the Saturn, but general lack of horsepower and terrible software support sadly killed it. (I do however hold a soft spot for (PC) Tempest 2000), and the 64 is in a totally different league.

Jag > PS? Don’t be silly. Though I was part of the Atari hardcore at the time, the Sony widdles all over it from a great height, super buttonariffic pad and cartridge capability be damned. Even the Jag rather quickly got a CD unit (that looked like a carbon fibre toilet) once the benefits of slightly slow storage vs insta-load were realised.

DC > GC > PS2 > Xbox…. hmmmm…. debatable. I’d probably shift PS2 > Xbox to the top, but it’s a close run thing between all of them. There’s not a great deal to choose from in terms of graphics, sound or gameplay, so it comes down to storage and other capabilities. The PS2 and Xbox can act as DVD (and CD… though not CDR or VCD) players, as well as having access therefore to about 8Gb of storage on one disc, and so win – besides, they have the best games library. The DC can only use CD-level GDROM for about 1Gb, and has almost as many great titles. The GC uses those little mini DVDs which restricts it to maybe 2Gb if you push the envelope, and it can’t play regular DVDs OR CDs, meaning you have to pay extra and budget for more shelf space and cabling for other boxes to do that, and has a more restricted software set.
Don’t forget also that the Huegbox (not sure why size would come into it, you’re not going to move it THAT often) was the only one to offer a HDD as standard, AND could be quite easily modded to become a full home entertainment centre (with progressive component output) long before the 360 and PS3 came along to do it by default. Really they come out even.

PS3 > Wii > 360 — you’re having a laugh ain’t ya? As someone said to me the other day, “The PS3 has a spreading Green Ring Of Death problem! The way it works is, so long as your 360 is showing a green ring, there’s no need to turn the Playstation on…”

  89. This system was an epic fail. but I would still feel sorry for the guy above who’s mom sold it for 5$. 5$. That’s it? World Of Warcraft (WOW. and no, I do not enjoy that game.).

    • tahrey says:

Methinks the green triangle doth protest too much ….. am I hearing the jealous retaliation of someone who REALLY wanted a Sega and a PSX, but got bought a NES and then an N64 by misunderstanding and uncaring parents?

Sony Playstation? Epic fail? Hardly. The core hardware was a little anemic and cut some corners, I’ll grant you, but none of them seem to have been those which were important to getting good games out of it. Switching to CDROM was a genius stroke, allowing much more detailed and expansive games, and it attracted some very talented developers who squeezed unbelievable results out of a 33mhz, 32 bit CPU, few-hundred-thousand polygon/sec 512kb GPU and 2mb RAM. The 64bit box had somewhat more refined graphics when done correctly, true, but often as not everything seemed rather smothered in fog. And suffering from extreme texture crunch. Somehow, stuff like Vagrant Story (or Ridge 4) still looked better than, say, Pod Racer (to pick an absolutely random example for both).

Oh, and Gran Turismo. And MGS. Trumped, absolutely, forever. You gain half a point each for SM3D and Goldeneye, but everything else loses.

  90. Sean says:

Blast Chamber, Doom, Twisted metal series, Gran Turismo 1 and 2, original Road and Track’s the need for speed, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro.

  91. Min says:

There were some pretty good games on the PSX… Xenogears and Suikoden 2 come to mind as two of the best. I also loved Breath of Fire 3 & 4, although I know they don’t have quite as wide an appeal.

It’s hard for me to consider any console newer than the SNES nostalgic, though.

    • michaelab says:

think of this, im 20 now and i enjoyed it when i was 8 and younger

this console was a very important part of many people childhoods. therefor it is nostalgic

  92. Alkalannar says:

FFVII-IX, of course, but Suikoden I and II are in there as well! And simply because it got ported over on FF Chronicles: Chrono Trigger (originally for SNES).

Hmm….4 Squeenix and 2 Konami. The Iron Chef sidequest in Suikoden II is still the BEST. SIDEQUEST. EVAR!

  93. EGV says:

The console for Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Final Fantasy VII!

  94. person says:

my favorite game of all time has to be legend of mana! noone i know has ever heard of it but i love it! ive been playing it since i was 4 and im still playing it now at 14. i also love chocobo racing too

  95. Laura says:

The original Resident Evil was the only game ever to scare the friggin bejeezus out of me. I played alot of basketball on this thing, too. Favorite memory is playing Crash Bandicoot: warped for three days straight, drank only Dr. Pepper, (didn’t eat), and still didn’t beat the game. However, I literally sweated Dr Pepper, which was more awesome than it sounds.

  96. william says:

i use the emulator now but i played and repeatedly completed crash 1 and 2. played resident evil survivor, and silent hill (scares the crap out of me in places) i still play arcade mode on crash team racing which even on hard i can get miles ahead of the CPU characters. crash bash is fun too
naughty dog crash bandicoot is the best

  97. P says:

Poy Poy, Spyro, Legend of Legaia (enjoys the seru system), Pandemonium 2, Chrono Cross, Threads of Fate (Dewprism), Crash Team Racing.

  98. Greg says:

Definitely Twisted Metal II. All day.

  99. Anonymous says:

definately ffvii, chronocross, gauntlet, and legend of mana!

still play them on the ps2 when i’m sick of wow

  100. Nealio says:

Definitely Team Buddies was my favorite game. I even recently bought a copy from Ebay for about $80. Proves how AWESOME of a game it was.

The first Twisted Metal was pretty damn good, too.

But…NOT Time Commando. I remember my dad got it for me one year for Christmas. I kept it just because it was such a horrible, horrible game.

  101. The gameboy says:

wow, the ps1 was my first game system.
bcak when i was a sony man.
    i mean sure, i have a ps3, but i had a wii first.
they don’t call me “the gameboy” for anything
also, Spyro=90’s game line i don’t know what they’re selling now, but it isn’t the REAL spyro…

  102. Akira says:

Oh heck yes. I still have mine, and I still love the graphics. My all time favorites (that I still play) were the original Spyro trilogy. Gotta love that purple dragon. The new Spyro games just lack what the originals have.

Yes, PS1 is in my top three favorite game consoles.

  103. Mr.Spence says:

the original spyro trilogy (anyone else remember visiting different worlds by way of gliding through a portal!!) and crash bandicoot were my favs :D

  104. LouiTheGhost says:

    Definitely parappa the rapper

  105. The PlayStation 3 is in my opinion the best multimedia center created to date. Most people recognize it for being able to play games, but it is also capable of playing CD, DVD, and the highly-acclaimed HD Blu-Ray format.
When it comes to gaming, there is no comparison. The PS3 receives all of the large multi-platform titles such as Batman: Arkham Asylum, Modern Warfare 2 and Street Fighter IV, and also gets arguably the best collection of exclusive games on the market including Killzone, Little Big Planet and Uncharted. The PS3 is a very convenient piece of hardware and requires no extra fees after purchase, and is also very reliable. An online PSN account for the PS3 is free, and allows you to create an online profile which can earn trophies from games, add friends and also download tons of content from the PlayStation Store.

  106. Jake says:

Tekken 2 and Spyro the Dragon, awesome games. Got me into video games in fact. I still play them on the PS3 today.

  107. Shuffle says:

This thing is still my favorite game system of all time, though I do have fond memories of the Sega Genesis and Dreamcast as well.

The Spyro series and Crash Bandicoot series are both necessary if you have one of these things. I also play a bunch of Digimon games on the PS1. Gran Turismo 1 & 2 are also pretty cool, and Nascar Rumble is a hilariously bad racing game that is strangely fun.

  108. Anonymous says:

Its pretty damn awesome that you can buy PS games on the PlayStation store.

  109. Tehran says:

Oddworld! I would sit and watch my 10 year old prodigy of a sister blast through that game with flying colors. Truly a genius game. I’ll be getting a tattoo of the logo soon. :)

  110. No love for the N64? Hmm. :/ Or the saturn.
And stop saying that Crash was good. He runs. He throws fruit. He dies. He wears a beany smile. The graphics are 10x worse than Mario 64. Yaay.

    • tahrey says:

You keep pushing this Nintendo (and now, oddly, Sega despite bashing them earlier) agenda, in what is supposed to be a Sony tribute thread. I don’t understand why. They will almost certainly have their moment on this site if they havent already. Wait your turn and stop stomping on this one.
And at least Sony-platform games have now advanced beyond the “run, jump, throw fruit” stage, after they had a fun time jumping on that particular bandwagon (particularly with their kid-oriented “PSOne” – in white plastic… hmmm!). Remind me, what’s the current hot game that the Nintendo-Sega amalgam are pushing? Oh yeah that’s right another rehash of SMB, just with PS2-level 3D avatars in place of the original sprites.

  111. tahrey says:

Remember seeing the first one of these when I was in early years at school… one of those “bring a game” days when they’d run out of lessons near christmas but were still required to take us in. Wipeout… looked pretty awesome (in a world where 16 bits still ruled, and a lot of people’s weapon of choice may still have been 8 – particularly the handhelds). As it belonged to some older kids, we weren’t allowed to touch, but we could look.

Eventually my bro got one for xmas… promptly modded it and so began the collecting of an enormous and only partially legal (or UK released) software library. So much epicness on a pile of gold-and-cyan discs… MGS. GT2. Suikoden. Xenogears. FFs 7 thru 9 (and the Anthology!). Endless 2D fighters and Megamans (plus a diversion into Tron Bonne). Soul Edge and Tekken 3 (and Ergheiz… hmm). Vagrant Story. Lego Racers. Abes Odyssey (that and the Theme series mentioned above, I forgot it was THAT old to have those titles!). MGS. Tomb Raider. GTA(1 and 2!). RR4. Tony Hawks series, TOCA series. Worms 2. Spidey. Quake II. Time Crisis. DDR and Parappa and all those… to name but a very, very few.
    Plus, Thrill Kill :D

And a whole load of other classics as mentioned above that I never even got chance to get into, as it wasn’t even my console and when lil bro was taking time to play those, I couldn’t even get close. But they still deserve some regard (Spyro, Crash, and oddly alongside them Resi, Silent Hill etc). And then, it paved the way for the PS2… which had further awesomeness like SSX and GTA3 whilst still being able to play the old games :)

Which is good, seeing as MY original (unchipped – had to actually pay (very little! probably less than the CDRs cost at the time!) money to get official versions of all those old copies) grey box breathed it’s last recently. It managed to avoid it for far longer than most of its early edition brethren, but finally succumbed to the laser tracking fault (typical Sony corner cutting on even a flagship machine – making the head guides out of plastic rather than metal so they wore down over time) so much that even turning it upside down no longer helped. Luckily, pre-loved PS2s are also ten-a-penny… time to grant my TV access to a whole additional realm of gaming whilst keeping the true classics alive :) :)

    To the SPSX, a deserved salute. o □ ∆ x!

  112. Cereal says:

    I had 2. Nuff’ said.

  113. Alex says:

You can buy PS 1 games for PS3 but it ain’t the same

  114. Q says:

I was quite fond of the 3D Frogger game… I played it almost every day until our PlayStation broke!
