Epic Win: Funnel Ball

Submitted by Lewk S, olympic-level Funnel Ball master.
Growing up in the early/mid ’90s, I fondly remember the numerous playground games I used to play. One of my favorite pastimes, of course, was throwing a kickball, basketball—or anything, really—into the towering Funnel Ball tower with my friends. I still see these on playgrounds, and I often see kids throwing balls into the funnel. Simple, very entertaining, and fondly remembered—that, to me, is pure win!

It’s basketball for the talent challenged!
how the heck is that fun? “oo! lets throw a ball in it! it’ll fit in!” what are you, 2nd Graders?
The point of the game is to not to see which ball fits or doesn’t fit, but not knowing who was going to get the ball next. There’s some more complexities involved but I just can’t remember them right away.
And yes, we would be 2nd graders when be played this game seeing that this is found mostly in Elementary school play grounds. *claps* yay for the slow kid!
We used to keep score using the numbers on top of the holes. You never knew which it would come out of, so you just hoped you got the 8.
When we got older and this was too easy, we made it so you had to dribble to the wall on the other side of the playground before you could shoot, so defense had more time to catch you.
Man, I want to play now.
Oh that’s right, I forgot all about the scoring on the sides.
i have never heard of it. sorry Kr, that im slow. im actually an 8th grader and im 11 years old. :p
If you’ve never heard of it, why are you criticizing it?
Plus, the description says these things are on playgrounds, where typically 2nd graders hang out…so yes, Funnel Ball is for children. Good job.
Never had one. We just had a wall that we played wall ball on.
When I was a kid, my friends would climb up in it like a crows nest on a pirate ship.
me too!
These are still popular!!! I work at an elementary school and there is one in the yard!!
these still exist in playgrounds today!!! but at my school the ball always got stuck in it so we’d make this kick ass cheerleader tower thing and get it down.
Oh man i totally remember these! So much fun, i almost forgot they existed.
I’ve never actually seen one in use, but I do remember seeing them when I was out of school and realizing it’s the same thing as a game called Centrifugal Bumblepuppy in Brave New World.
We were banned from using ours after a few months. The ball would always get stuck, and the recess teachers would get called on to get the ball.
Of course, it was totally epic when they plastic sealed the exits and left the top wide open. Bullies caught onto that one real quick. Yes, these are the people that educate the future…….
my mom’s school has one. Its been there since I attended there, 20 plus years. It was the shizznip.
My elementary school playground had one. No one ever played with it. Probably because no one ever explained what to do with it!!
I remember these, it was all we used to do back in the day! we used to annoy our friends by stealing their sweatshirts, shoes, hats, etc. and throwing them in, lol.
I remember seeing other schoolyards with these but never saw them in use. My elementary school literally had a barren wasteland of asphalt for a yard. At least we had painted outlines for a baseball diamond, 4-square and hopscotch, but no equipment, not even a basketball hoop.
wow! I thought it’s a traffic lights.
Wow.
The nostalgia truck just hit me HARD.
REALLY HARD.
I had one of these in kindergarden, only ours was blue plastic with yellow fixtures. I really only remember trying it a couple times, and I can’t even remember if I got it in or not. I remember how huge it looked. I’m sure if I found my old school now it would seem quite small…..
The only really crazy thing about it is that I hadn’t thought about that in thirteen years until just now… Thanks, once upon a win!
