Epic Win: The Incredible Crash Test Dummies

Submitted by Alan T, who claims he’s no dummy.

What haven’t these guys done? Star in a public service advertisement? Check. Have a line of toys modeled after them? Check. Be drawn into cartoon characters? Check. Have a band named after them? Check. These human-like robots have had more success in life than I have! It’s almost creepy that overgrown dolls made to test the impact of car accidents on human bodies became as popular as they did. But stranger things have happened, right?

    LOVE these guys!

  2. Anonymous says:

Didn’t they have a band too?

  3. Skydude says:

    Some video.

  4. I had some of these toys when I was a kid!

    • TheObject says:

The toys were also a win. Disappointing that the people who had the commercials stopped the toys from using the names ‘Vince’ and ‘Larry’, it would have been mutually beneficial to both causes.

  5. PulpHero says:

The Incredible Crash Test Dummies deserve a guest spot on Mythbusters.

  6. Krepta says:

I had a whole bunch of the action figured, they were clearanced at Toys R Us one day and I went nuts. What was interesting was that half of them were labeled “Vince & Larry: Crash Dummies”, and the other half were called “The Incredible Crash Dummies.” The ‘incredible’ ones were identified as Slick and Spin, and they appeared in the CGI cartoon pilot. I guess the national safety council pulled their funding at the last minute or something.

    • mjc says:

They also had a Incredible Crash Dummies GameBoy game starting Slick and Spin. I still have it and it’s relatively fun for being a cheap game made to cash in a quick buck from the brand.

    • csimme01 says:

It was the networks that killed them. They started as a PSA (Public Service Announcment) and thus they were aired for free by the networks. When they became popular and the toys were made the networks wonld no longar air the PSA’s for free because they felt it was advertising. They did sell the toys but PSA’s were discontinued because they couldn’t afford to pay for them.

  7. Harvey says:

You can learn a lot from a dummy. Probably one of the best ad slogans ever created, next to “Don’t Mess With Texas.” (anti-littering campaign)

  8. LeeTheDestroyer says:

At my high school two guys dress up as them every year and remind everyone to buckle up. It makes me happy to see them walking down the hall.

  9. bibliotechnique says:

The CTD commercial in which they rap is an epic WIN!

  10. Me says:

If I remember correctly, I’m pretty sure there was a Sega Genesis game for The Incredible Crash Dummies. I loved that game : ) Especially because all the parts that you had to dodge was literally like a crash testing ground. Wrenches thrown all over the place, tires rolling around…yeah, those were the good ole days…

  11. Recyclops says:

Made Driver’s ed so much more fun. This was my favorite film. They make appearances towards the beginning and at the end. 6:53 on is pure gold. Just when you think it’s over…

  12. DarkChick says:

They had a videogame too…lol. it was really silly but they were EVERYWHERE!

  13. Tear says:

They used to have a videogame for the Super nintendo, I used to play it as a kid

  14. Varkson says:

I used to play the game on the NES. Damn it was so hard, still cant pass the second level even now with my gaming skills.

  15. DevinM says:

And then there’s the more recent “Buster” from Mythbusters. =D

  16. Nat says:

Possibly the greatest advert ever. Seeing this post reminded me of it!
