Epic Win: Clue (Movie)

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by katsak, with the candlestick in the library

Clue actually did pretty poorly in theaters (seems to be a theme today), but is still beloved by Tim Curry fans today. There was also a time when it seemed like Comedy Central was airing it every other day, in between John Candy marathons. I’m confident that this will remain the best adaptation of a board game, unless someone makes a movie out of Settlers of Catan.

  1. vinylitis says:

first! ha ha! love it! tim curry ftw!

    • Lemon Curry? says:

(vinylitis) “Are you trying to make me look stupid?”
(Lemon Curry?) “Well, you certainly don’t need any help from me, since you’re a firster.”
      (vinylitis) “That’s right!”

  2. sopranomom says:

    HOORAY FOR TIM!!!!!!!

  3. Meghan says:

I think the whole movie’s hilarious all around, not just Tim. Great, great, great casting with this one. Gotta love the alternate endings. :D

  4. Mia says:

I actually just watched this movie yesterday. seen it countless times, but it never gets old.

“fl-flames. on the side of my face”

  5. qtster says:

When I was a kid we run around singing “I am your singing telegram…pow”. I love this movie!

  6. Nikaface says:

I definitely love the casting in this movie. Martin Mull, Madeline Kahn, Lesley Warren, and, most of all, Tim Curry. Indeed, it is truly ftw. =D

“I believe that all men should be like Kleenex – soft, strong, and disposable.”

    • WorldsTallestMidget says:

And who can forget Colleen Camp’s breasts! Uh, I mean Colleen Camp as the breasts…I mean maid!
G** D*** Those were dynamite breasts!

  7. Jen says:

“Communism was just a red herring.”

One of my all time favorite lines. Frequently used in today’s conversations. :)

  8. Steroid says:

    “1+2+2+1″

    “Yep, two corpses, everything’s fine.”

“I didn’t do it! Somebody help me, please.”

“And monkey’s brains, though popular in Cantonese cuisine, are not often to be found in Washington DC.”

  9. Scieran says:

    This movie was awesome.
    Also, WTB Settlers movie.

  10. Ssyrie says:

One of my favorite movies. Anytime someones telling me something and says “to make a long story short”, I just can’t stop from interrupting with “Too late”

  11. boaks says:

    looooove it

  12. Kai says:

So much love of this movie!

    “I’m not shouting! Alright I am! I’m shouting! I’m shouting! I’m shout…” *thunk*

  13. Swift says:

When shown in theatres only one of the various endings was shown meaning If your friends saw it somewhere else, they might have seen a different ending then you.

    • teenie says:

I actually saw all 3 endings in the theatre…dunno if it was on the first or second run though. Oo, that gives me an idea! Epic win: 2nd run movie theatres, 99 cents a ticket!

  14. Kgonz says:

Let us in! Let us in!

Let us out! Let us out!

I LOVE this movie – best one I ever bought on DVD.

  15. FlonkertonChamp says:

    MRS. PEACOCK WAS A MAN?!

clue is my all-time favorite movie.

  16. Nightlyeclipse says:

“Is this place for you? ”
“Indeed no, sir. I’m merely a humble butler”
“What exactly do you do? ”
    “I buttle, sir. ”

SOOO many great lines and great actors in this movie. It’s definitely in my Top 5 favorites!

    • Adamas says:

I was hoping someone did this line, it was one of my all-time faves as a kid. But my mom got tired of me asking what “buttle” was. :P

  17. teenie says:

Every year, from age 8 to age 17, I had a slumber party for my birthday. Every year, from age 8 to age 17, we’d watch Clue at my slumber party, then be too creeped out to sleep.

(the hand with the wrench still creeps me out!)

  18. Smalls says:

Just watched this the other day. Great movie!

“And monkeys’ brains, though popular in Cantonese cuisine, are not often to be found in Washington, D.C.”
“Is that what we ate?” *urp*

  19. Komi says:

Ahh I remember this, I almost didn’t watch it because the introductions took so long, but the minute mister Green broke the side table I was hooked. It’s an especially great movie for slumber parties. =^w^=

  20. PulpHero says:

If you like CLUE then check out MURDER BY DEATH (1976). It’s a comedic spoof of Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Charlie Chan, Nick & Nora Charles {THE THIN MAN (1934)}, and Sam Spade THE MALTESE FALCON.

I think that MURDER BY DEATH starts out stronger than CLUE, but CLUE maintains its story better overall.

    • Airplane! style fan says:

Oh yes, I enjoyed both films, but Murder By Death is extra fun for its satire of several common detective styles, and excellent performances by many famous actors, and some soon to be famous in later years. (very young Ed Bundy?)

  21. Staci says:

    “Can you keep a secret?”
    “Yes…”
    “So can I.”

  22. TeeBee says:

    *fweeeeeee*
Dundutdutdundun… I, am, your singing telegram -*BLAM*

    • Basara549 says:

That was Jane Weidlin (I hope I spelled that right) of the Go-Gos as the singing telegram…

I quote that line occasionally, as a tension breaker.

I also like the one “The kingdom of heaven is at hand…”

      • TeeBee says:

Also later known as (if my mind serves me) Marcy D’Arcy in Married with Children.

        • forge says:

No, Janie Wiedlin and Amanda Bearse are not the same person. For one thing, Janie likes boys.

Janie was Joan of Arc in the first Bill & Ted movie though. So cute, that girl.

  23. Bex says:

Yes! One of my all-time favorite movies, and one of my favorite Tim Curry roles!

  24. Casa says:

People have mentioned the flame line that Madeline Kahn had, the singing telagram, let us out let us out… let us in let us in… Tim Curry’s “butteling” and the infamous red herring….

    I’m going to toss in:
    “I told yo I wasn’t GAY!”

Just an all around epic freakin’ movie. Laughed my coke all over the computer before even getting to the comments. ^^

  25. OneHappyAtheist says:

How apropos! We watched this on Saturday; my sister was perusing our movies and decided upon it. :D Great movie!

  26. Elisabeth says:

Wow, it has been ages since I’ve seen this movie. I think I persuaded my mum to buy it once…now I just have to find it! :D

  27. ErsIII says:

“What are you afraid of? A fate wose than death?”

“No just death. Isn’t that enough?”

  28. chibidraco says:

LOVE this movie and was one of the first “old” movies from my childhood I introduced to my daughter. May have been a mistake because now when she’s mad at me she stares me down and says “Flames…on the SIDES OF MY FACE”. :-D
    My personal favorite is still:
“But that was your second husband. Your first husband also disappeared.”
“But that was his job. He was an illusionist.”
    “But he never REAPPEARED”
    “Hmph…he wasn’t a very good illusionist.”

  29. fish eye no miko says:

“She threatened to kill him in public.”
“Why would she kill him in public?”

    “I’m a plant.”
“I thought men like you were usually called a ‘fruit’?”

    And, of course:
“Communism was just a red herring!”

  30. Celanthas says:

Love this movie. Can’t believe I don’t have this on DVD.

I need to kick myself. Hard.

  31. Mpr11 says:

Well while Tim Curry is WIN! No one here has mentioned Christopher Lloyd as Professor Plum!

  32. Nikaface says:

I’m not sure that Professor Plum was the absolute greatest role. He didn’t have too many comedic lines, though he is indeed a great actor. I think Tim Curry is what makes Clue such a funny movie and a fan favorite. And now I need to find my Clue DVD.

I never get tired of the three random endings. “That could’ve happened. But what about this?”

  33. professor annoying says:

Madeline Kahn was beyond compare, may she rest in peace.

  34. Kat says:

Let’s not forget the slapstick…. “what’s this, another door?”
Absolutely classic, I might go watch it right now…

  35. xarexerax says:

It’s worth noting that they’re making another ‘Clue’ flick coming up here in the next few years. Also movies based on Battleship, Candyland, Monopoly (directed by Ridley Scott!) … the list goes on.

Not sure how I feel about all of those, but if this is the baseline, then it’s not so bad!

  36. Pixie says:

“Sit!” *Mr. Green sits quickly on the bench*

“No Sir I was talking to the dogs.”

Oh what about when he keeps spilling stuff on all the women!

I’ve been using this movie to do QC at work and I crack up every time. Classic movie and epic Nostalgia Win!

  37. kiddude7 says:

YES! This is the coolest board game turned Movie! Whoot Go clue!

  38. kiddude7 says:

    so funny too

  39. ulostme says:

“Wadsworth, am I correct in saying that we are the only ones in this house”
    “No.”
    “No!”
“Sorry, I said no meaning yes.”
“Yes there is or yes there isnt.”
    “No”
    “Will you answer the question”
    “Yes. What was the question?”

That goes on for like 5 minutes and cracks me up every-single-time!

  40. ulostme says:

I’ve been telling people that “Communism is just a red herring” for years. I just found out what a red herring was like last year. I didnt always get the jokes when I was a kid, but the slapstick is timeless.

  41. forge says:

Murder By Death was better and a similar format. Naw, this was still a great flick. Nothing with Curry in it can be bad. And Lesley Ann Warren, mrrowph.

They’re remaking it y’know. They’re truly, truly out of ideas.

  42. des says:

My absolute favorite movie, I never get tired of it. I remember introducing it to my cousins this past summer and they couldn’t stop laughing over Mrs. White and the ‘flames’ line.

And I can’t believe this one hasn’t been mentioned yet:

“It’s a free country, don’t you know that?”
“I didn’t know it was THAT free.”

  43. Jack says:

You know, it’s funny that this got posted here, because I am doing an onstage adaption of this movie this week at my school! I think this is a sign that it will be a great show!
Oh, and by the way, I’m playing Colonel Mustard :)

  44. bfordc says:

    Shouldn’t be here.

  45. Cliff says:

Hey, who was the super-busty maid in this and did she ever do skinemax?

  46. juharr says:

I got to see this in a little down town theater in a college town. It was put on by the RHPS Club, so they had people acting out the roles down front. Lots of people dressed up as characters and everyone was shouting out their favorite lines as they happened in the movie. Would love to see this movie in that type of setting again.

  47. lololol says:

I gotta see this, it looks hilarious. XD

  48. lololol says:

    Haven’t seen it…

  49. John says:

This is my feelgood movie. Watched it last week when I had the Flu. The soup slurping scene gets me everytime. Best movie

  50. WorldsTallestMidget says:

Wadsworth: “…Therefore I intend to expose myself!”
    “Please! There are ladies present!”
    LOL

  51. B.cereus says:

My favorite part as a kid was also the singing telegram. Which led to my best friend and I running around the house screaming it a lot, then falling down.

  52. o_0 says:

I am your singing telegram! *BANG*

  53. Pratz Strike says:

    ahahaha.

    “Well if you’d stop shouting!”

“I’M NOT SHOUTING!… all right, I’m shouting! I’M SHOUTING, I’M SHOUTING, I’M~” *thonk – sound of candlestick falling off doorframe onto Tim Curry’s head*

  54. Liver Loafer Ranger says:

Whenever my sister is in frnt of me in a doorway, we do the “Go on! I’ll be right behind you!”
    “That’s what I’m afraid of!”

    Ha ha haaaaa!

“Well then who did I shoot?”
    “My butler”
    “Oh, shucks!”

“Get out of here, ya beatnick!”

“It’s you and me, honey bunch!”

    And our all-time favorite:

“What do you mean, *thunk!* MURDER?!”

This has to be one of the most clever scripts in movie history! :)

  55. Travis says:

“I knew you would expose me, so I chose to expose myself!”
    “PLEASE! There are ladies present!”

  56. dukethepcdr says:

Tim Curry is awesome! One of my favorite actors. Clue is a great board game and a pretty funny movie. I imagine it’s pretty hard to make a movie based on a board game.

  57. Sidley says:

    “Your first husband also disappeared.”
“But that was his job. He was an illusionist.”
    “But he never RE-appeared.”
“Well, he wasn’t a very good illusionist.”

The whole cast was perfect, but I have a soft spot for Madeline in particular. I miss her.
