’80s Music Video Thursday is Gonna Set Sail
Another edition of ’80s Music Video Thursday, where we bring you the best/worst/cheesiest of what YouTube can let us embed. As always, leave your suggestions for next week’s post in the comments.
“Love Shack” by the B-52s
This party in the “Love Shack” is what I’d imagine the birthday party for a 40-year-old at Chuck-E-Cheese might look like. Awesome awesome awesome song.
“Yo’ Little Brother” by Nolan Thomas submitted by themanwithoutaplan
literally, the worst music video from the 80s ever made.
“Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats submitted by a lot of people
Probably the most frequent request we’ve gotten for ’80s Music Video Thursday, but truthfully, I think the video is pretty well done. Cheesy concept for sure, but there are no bad special effects or weird cuts.
“TV Dinners” by ZZ Top submitted by MaryInBoise
I polled most of my friends who grew up in the 80s like me, and almost none of them remember this ZZ Top classic. Probably because it doesn’t have any scantily clad women in it.
“Voyage Voyage” by Desireless submitted by anonymous
I’ve never heard this song before — probably because it’s French — but this video definitely qualifies for awesomely terrible. I mean, what’s more fitting to synth-heavy brooding than a girl giving what appears to be the world’s worst Powerpoint presentation.

If I wanted to watch Youtube videos all the time I would go to Youtube. What happened to all the photo posts?
I think this is better than the picture posts. 80’s music videos were the best!

Video Killed the Radio Star- The Buggles
I don’t mind video posts, but they are being posted every single day. The picture posts are few and far between. There are lots of people who come here during breaks at work and school and we can’t sit around and watch/listen to videos. Even when I’m at home, I don’t watch the majority of the videos. I just scroll past them.. as does my boyfriend and even a few of my friends.
One or two videos here and there is fine, but when the majority of the content is video based is when it gets annoying.
I know a picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes you need a video to explain the totality of the awesomeness of the Win.
Ironically, the hottest chick in the Love Shack video was RuPaul…
You know, until you pointed it out, I never noticed RuPaul in the video before.
…Is that who that was?
Ok, I got some more ideas.
Did anyone tell Blotto they were acting like idiots? The video to “I Wanna Be a LifeGuard”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMlyqKa1p78
Next, how about guys who were drunk trying to act like they were robbing a bank with their instruments? It’s Judas Priest with “Breaking The Law”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psTUiQzNoxw
The first time I saw this I was thinking “What are they trying to accomplish? I still ask that. “Cover Girl” by New Kids On The Block
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkXrAuR951c
Another one that is just cheezy “Hang Up The Phone” by Annie Golden
OMG— Voyage is Vuela, Vuela by Magneto!
i couldn´t belive either!!!!! so they are just using this song and was one of their biggest hits aghhh they suck
You can’t forget Little Girls by Oingo Boingo. That’s one of the creepiest videos ever made.

another WTF music video
Yeah, but she’s gorgeous and I really like the colorful imagery.
I know that too, and I like listening to Niagara’s music:) but their music videos were always funny to me
Your WHAT?!
TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN ROOF! RUSTED.
Wow…I think Yo Little Brother is possibly the worst (and gayest) video ever made.
That was so bad, I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Let me guess. You have little to no experience with live stage shows and the concept of social commentary in fiction is relatively foreign to you.
Unless it’s the song itself, everything I can think of which you might be calling bad or gay are better explained as “artistic license” and I found it to be quite clever.
The song is awful. My ears wanted to close shut because the song was so terrible. (Which it is) Diablo did you notice that I used words that do not make me sound like a twelve year old. It’s called maturity. Only immature troglodytes say gay instead of the thousands of other words we could say to voice disapproval.
I’m looking up Love Shack on Wikipedia, which tells my the song only went to #3. Are you kidding me? Love Shack wins the 1980s, hands down. That’s it, Love Shack wins the whole frickin’ 80s, all of it. It was easily the coolest thing that happened the entire decade.
These are all awful.
If the little brother in the Nolan Thomas video were 16 or 17, it would almost make sense. What makes it really creepy is that they used a bunch of 10-year-olds. Somebody call Chris Hansen.
Okay, someone help me out here. The kids were supposed to be Billy Idol, Prince, Springsteen, and Cyndi Lauper. Who was the guy in the shades supposed to be?
FTR, I think the Lauper kid had the coolest costume. It’s something I would have wanted to wear in third grade.
Ric Ocasek from The Cars, I believe.
It’s artistic exaggeration. One of the themes in the piece is kids trying to grow up too fast.

I’m Over You-Sequal
I say no more…
“Tv Dinners” has stuck with me for what, 25 years now? Awesome early 80s video. That little creature was great!
I agree – TV Dinners was cool, but got eclipsed by the other 3 huge hits of the Eliminator album (Gimme all your lovin, Legs, and Sharp Dressed Man).
And, for the persons complaining about videos, perhaps you should check the requirements for onceuponawin – To even nominate something, you’ve got to provide a video of it (preferred), or at worst a still of it. It is RARE that this particular part of the ICHC heirarchy DOESN’T have a video involved with a post… Jeez…
Absolutely it got eclipsed, which is why I mentioned that no one I asked remembered it and offered my theory about scantily clad women. I actually think it’s a great video and offered it up as something I’m truly nostalgic about.
Screw you all! The Safety Dance video is awesome. :<
It makes me happy.
Second and Thirded.
“I Ran” by A Flock of Seagulls! Loved that one-finger jam on the keyboards.
I don’t see what’s wrong with Voyage Voyage. Has the submitter really never heard of the infamous vacation slideshow? (“Voyage Voyage” translates to “Vacation Vacation”)
I thought it was a very nice piece of surrealist art.
“Voyage Voyage” was especially popular in the USSR. Russian version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW5icEb5nk4

I had totally forgotten that ZZTop video!
You know that dance wasn’t as safe as they said it was.
No no no no no! Love Shack is not an awesome song. It is an awful, terrible, pitiful excuse for a song! Probably the second worst song ever created in the history of music (absolute worst song is She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy).
Now TV Dinners, that is an awesome song.
Voyage Voyage from Desireless was a BIG hit in French speaking countries… yeah really
