They did that on purpose to parody Donny and Marie Osmond. Also, Elmo appears in this movie before he was Elmo, at the end when Maria is talking about all the people who live on Sesame Street. :]

My son and I watch this movie all the time, it is the only thing besides Spongebob that he will sit still for.

LOVED this movie! Used to have it on VHS. A couple years ago I saw it in the $5 DVD bin at Walmart. It is now part of my DVD collection. I always remember the tossed salad sequence. I didn’t know realize tossed salad was a real thing as a kid, haha.

I loved this movie — and own it — but for some reason I REALLY liked all the Big Bird travel movies – Big Bird Goes to China, Big Bird Goes to Egypt, etc. Thinly veiled cultural learning coupled with “they-don’t-speak-English” gags in a made-for-TV movie — WIN!

My parents took me to this movie and I balled. I also had a panic attack when we went to Sesame Street on Ice at the Richfield Coliseum. (Ohio) We had front row seats and the costumes freaked me out. We left almost immediately.

I did love “Follow that Bird” as a kid and now would like to see it again. I remember when Elmo in Grouchland came out and I was all angry about it b/c I don’t like Elmo. Then I watched it a few years ago and realized the movie was not about Elmo. It was about Mandy Patinkin. Therefore, it wins. I do think FTB is better, but only marginally.

I know I saw this movie as a child in the theater. We were hoping to see Disney’s latest and since it was sold out, we went to this instead. (Disney’s latest, incidentally, was none other than “The Black Cauldron”.) All I really remember about it now tends to support some website (I think it was probably The Onion) that crowned the “Bluebird of Happiness” scene as maybe the single biggest childhood-destroying moment from our generation. I’m willing to bet there’s nothing like that in “Elmo in Grouchland”.

And this win is appropriate given today’s 40th birthday of Sesame Street (or as Chevy Chase mispronouced it, “sa same street”).
