Epic Win: Follow That Bird

Submitted by L Denton, voiced by Frank Oz

Follow that Bird was the first Sesame Street film (and the better of the two, IMHO). One quote I remember from Big Bird: “Sesame Street is brought to you today by the letters W and B.” (get it?)

Incorrect source or offensive?

» 29 Blasts From The Past

  1. Jeff G says:

Was this the movie that had the tossed salad sequence? That was a hoot!

And this win is appropriate given today’s 40th birthday of Sesame Street (or as Chevy Chase mispronouced it, “sa same street”).

  2. follie says:

Aww! I loved this movie when I was younger. I was so sad when my dumb brother taped over it with Aliens.

  3. Mad Ness Monster says:

I know I saw this movie as a child in the theater. We were hoping to see Disney’s latest and since it was sold out, we went to this instead. (Disney’s latest, incidentally, was none other than “The Black Cauldron”.) All I really remember about it now tends to support some website (I think it was probably The Onion) that crowned the “Bluebird of Happiness” scene as maybe the single biggest childhood-destroying moment from our generation. I’m willing to bet there’s nothing like that in “Elmo in Grouchland”.

  4. Kaerl says:

I loved the whole theme that Big Bird was being sent to live with a bird family by social workers because “birds belong with a bird family”.

  5. argentlupus says:

Any movie that has Waylon Jennings, Sandra Bernhard, and a few other random celebs in it is an auto win. Cause there ain’t no road too long.

  6. nallor says:

I did love “Follow that Bird” as a kid and now would like to see it again. I remember when Elmo in Grouchland came out and I was all angry about it b/c I don’t like Elmo. Then I watched it a few years ago and realized the movie was not about Elmo. It was about Mandy Patinkin. Therefore, it wins. I do think FTB is better, but only marginally.

  7. Morna says:

Best line ever: “Are you kidding? I LOVE wild goose chases! Let’s go get lost!” Out of sheer boredom I watched this before a college missions trip and laughed SO HARD because I knew I was going to be getting in that kind of a situation very soon (and sure enough, I did!)

  8. fail says:

    I don’t get w & b

  9. Amanda T says:

This movie was so full of win. I can’t tell you how many times I rented this movie from the video store as a kid (and at 27 I even have a copy on DVD now). One of my cell phone ring tones is The Grouch Anthem. I could just keep going on and on. :-)

  10. doonyboy says:

I remember seeing this movie in theatres with my mom. Her water broke while we were there and we finished the movie before she went to deliver my little sister.

  11. Gerc says:

I believe Big Bird was Carroll Spinney, not Frank Oz.

  12. Romana3 says:

Yes, Carroll Spinney is Big Bird and also Oscar the Grouch. He still does the voices and puppetry.

  13. AV says:

Absolutely a wonderful movie. I had the soundtrack when I was young and listened to that all the time. My sister found the movie on DVD and gave it to me for Christmas this past year, though I’ve had no luck on the soundtrack.

  14. JillS says:

My parents took me to this movie and I balled. I also had a panic attack when we went to Sesame Street on Ice at the Richfield Coliseum. (Ohio) We had front row seats and the costumes freaked me out. We left almost immediately.

  15. Heather says:

I’m not ashamed to admit that I watched this movie repeatedly in middle school AND junior high. Yes, my life is that geeky. :)

  16. Julia says:

Sounds like you were really a fun kid JillS. Man it’s hard to be a parent when everything you do to get your kid to have fun makes them ball or have panic attacks. Why try at that point. FTL.

  17. Brian says:

Love this movie. My family has standing orders to play “Ain’t No Road Too Long” at my funeral.

  18. Tiffany says:

I liked this movie, but at the same time, I didn’t. It made me so sad to watch. The blue bird part would bring me to tears. What can I say, I was a sensitive kid.

  19. Nicidoodle says:

I just watched this with my son last night!!! He loved the grouch diner.

  20. yayy says:

I just watched this with my nephew! Love it! Back when sesame street wasn’t “elmo hour” *sigh*

  21. HeidiKaye says:

I loved this movie — and own it — but for some reason I REALLY liked all the Big Bird travel movies – Big Bird Goes to China, Big Bird Goes to Egypt, etc. Thinly veiled cultural learning coupled with “they-don’t-speak-English” gags in a made-for-TV movie — WIN!

  22. Julie says:

OMG I remember watching this over and over again when I was little! I always used to cry when Big Bird sang that “I’m So Blue” song.

  23. KelliKat says:

I cannot state how much I loved this movie as a kid. But I’ll Try.
I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie. I loved this movie.
And when I ask people about it, they look at me like I’m crazy.

  24. Kristen says:

LOVED this movie! Used to have it on VHS. A couple years ago I saw it in the $5 DVD bin at Walmart. It is now part of my DVD collection. I always remember the tossed salad sequence. I didn’t know realize tossed salad was a real thing as a kid, haha.

  25. Bart says:

Am I the only one who noticed that the children in the Dodo
family were named “Donny and Marie”?
