Bonnie Tyler Owns ’80s Music Video Thursday

We’re back with more awesomely bad videos. As always, leave your suggestions for next week in the comments.

“Tainted Love” by Soft Cell submitted by CosmykDolfyn
OMFGLOOKOUT! Glow-in-the-dark spotted dancers! Random fireball! Floating head in space! Gaaahh!

“Tired of Toein’ the Line” by Rocky Burnette submitted by QuoteMan
Playing instruments often involves dancing around like it’s a slumber party.

“Holding Out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler submitted by StreakyTSC
By which she means holding out for a cowboy dressed in white to murder a bunch of cowboys dressed in black.

“Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler
StreakyTSC reminded me of this video. The song is epic; the video is ridiculously nonsensical. Srsly, WHAT IS GOING ON???

  1. Beppo says:

I always loved the weird Village of the Damned imagery in the Total Eclipse of the Heart video.

  2. sopranomom says:

If you haven’t seen it yet, you have to see “Total Eclipse of the Heart – Literal Version” on youtube. Just don’t drink or eat anything while you watch it… You’re sure to ruin your screen and keyboard if you do.

  3. krypto092108 says:

I think murder is a bit strong, given the visual and intended contexts…
Don’t you? Bad Guys by sheer virtue of their alignment tend to get what they deserve… This is just a hymn to the hero and what is good and right with the universe…

  4. vinylitis says:

who is rocky burnette? and why is soft cell “awesomely bad”? i <3 soft cell…

  5. CosmykDolfyn says:

Wow…I did not think at all if you were going to pick one of mine I submitted it would be ‘Tainted Love”. Aw well, Bonnie totally wins it anyway :D Here’s some more nominations!

“I wanna Be A Cowboy” by “Boys Don’t Cry. The entire video is in a thought bubble, for crying out loud.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s05jcrJw0as

Ok, how about some Frankie Goes To Hollywood? Apparently, Lasers are the only important thing in a music video.

“The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats The odd hilarity and weirdness of the video actually makes the song worth listening to!

  6. Watery Tart says:

Take my breath away – Berlin

  7. Mark, Sr. says:

    Jim Steinman RULES!

    • foppagal says:

Jim Steinman is just epic. I was really bummed when he stopped working with Meatloaf. Meatloaf has a good voice, but without Steinman’s awesome lyrics, it’s just no good.

      • TheObject says:

If you don’t have it. Pick up Bat Out of Hell III. It is Meat Loaf redoing a good number of Jim Steinman songs. Mostly ones that were not hits, but also the Celine Dion/ Steinman track “t’s all coming back to me now” which went from a song that I hate to a song that I love instantly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8u7JjxvgEo

  8. Kurt says:

If you haven’t included it already, Journey’s “Separate Ways” has to be one of the most epically terribly music videos of all time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQbZRMLKozk

    • Razor says:

LOL I am SUCH a big Journey fan…I love that video because there’s parts of it where the band just is so hamming it up…totally not taking themselves very seriously. Actually, I think they did that in all of their videos, which makes them a lot of fun to watch. Steve Perry lampshaded the whole thing in his video for “Oh Sherrie” where a pretentious video producer tries to make the video an epic production.

Back in the day when videos didn’t have to make a lick of sense…well, sometimes they don’t today (although I can’t remember the last time I actually saw a music video) but back then? The more nonsensical the better! XD

  9. Carme says:

I’m surprised no one saw the double difference in the Tainted Love video. It’s supposed to be night but you can see the light is from the sun, as I’m assuming they are shooting during the day.

  10. Miroku says:

I’ll suggest You’re Only Human (Second Wind) by by Billy Joel.
It has a pre MythBusters Adam Savage in it.

Billy Joel – You're Only Human (Second Wind)Uploaded by catrin345. – Music videos, artist interviews, concerts and more.

  11. donnaw says:

speaking of Safety Dance – check out “Meow Dance” on youtube – very silly.

  12. Taross says:

Sopranonom and Dagny mentioned it too…

  13. MaryInBoise says:

I polled most of my friends who grew up in the 80s like me, and almost none of them remember this ZZ Top classic. Probably because it doesn’t have any scantily clad women in it.

  14. Voyage Voyage - Desireless says:

  15. QuoteMan says:

Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA5MtAmT24g
I love the living room part

  16. farsidefreak says:

How bout Take on me by A-ha?
(shhhh…its actually one of my favrite music videos!)

  17. themanwithoutaplan says:

literally, the worst music video from the 80s ever made.

  18. shalin says:

I kept thinking during the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” video, is this where all those women got the idea to become teachers and seduce their students?

  19. brmbug says:

Nothing can top Yo Little Brother. But I’m gonna try:

  20. CosmykDolfyn says:

Here’s an idea! Don’t have to do it this week, but just an idea for the future. Have a week where it is themed that bands used different visual elements than most music videos. Here’s three examples of what I mean. Note that all of them are actually cool videos.

“Land Of Confusion” By Genesis It’s puppets, not people!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oepXF2B5NK4

“SledgeHammer” by Peter Gabriel A great video done in stop-motion photography.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1tTN-b5KHg

“A Criminal Mind” by Gowan It was a big hit in Canada, and it should have been a hit in the U.S. Comic Book characters and style run rampant here.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIjddye2JSA

I wanted to also show a-ha and their video for “Take On me” but you can’t find it on youtube thanks to all the literal video garbage. sheesh

  21. Razor says:

I’ll rat out my favorite band. XD Here’s probably their most awesomely bad video ever, but it’s a lot of fun just the same.

    Journey, “Chain Reaction” (circa 1983)
