Epic Win: Sidney Poitier

Submitted by JD, actor, film director, author, and diplomat

Sir Sidney Poitier is credited with legitimizing black actors in mainstream cinema. He refused to play into racial stereotypes, even though most roles for black actors demanded. Also, does anyone remember that episode of South Park where he fights Mecha Streisand?

Incorrect source or offensive?

Wow, how serious. Bring back the nickelodeon stuff and commercials.

    Yay! Second Comment!

  3. xavier says:

i just know him from “the defiant ones” awesome movie. recommend it to everyone. except for Klan members

  4. Awesome says:

“Also, does anyone remember that episode of South Park where he fights Mecha Streisand?”
That’s all I think of when I hear Sidney Poitier.

  5. Lynda says:

“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” is one of my favorite movies. It’s a real classic and he did an excellent job with the role.

  6. Frogger says:

He’s one of my favorite actors…of all time. Dammit, now Kanye West is stuck in my head.

  7. Roxie says:

To Sir, With Love & A Patch of Blue are my favs. I loooove Sidney. He was so hot back in his day

  8. dotdotdot says:

Epic fail. Noone knows who this guy is, nor do we care.

    • BigSwami says:

^You are the epic fail because you will never appreciate the awesome awkward go-go dancing in To Sir With Love. It’s OK, people like you are the perfect fit for our new national culture of emboldened stupidity.

  9. Good Grief says:

“To Sir, With Love” was his breakthrough, and a marvellous adaptation of the novel; I still watch it, and laugh and cry at all the same spots.

Does anyone recall that he was in “Sneakers”? Hi-larious. “Did I ever tell you why I had to leave the CIA?” “No…” “My TEMPER!!”

  10. ceallaig says:

“No one knows who this guy is” … speak for yourself, and then go out and rent Lilies of the Field, A Patch of Blue, To Sir with Love, The Defiant Ones, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and how can we forget In the Heat of the Night (‘they call me MR. Tibbs!’) If no one knows who this guy is, how is it that just about every black actor today credits him as a role model, from Denzel on down?

Question — is it really SIR Sidney now? If so, way cool!!

  11. Hugfangi says:

“Also, does anyone remember that episode of South Park where he fights Mecha Streisand?”
    Totally!
I was gonna quote him from the episode, but all I can remember from it is Cartman’s habit of finishing ‘Sailing away’ whenever he hears the beginning of the song
