Epic Win: Clairol True to Light Makeup Mirror

clairol

Submitted and Written by Melanie H, a division of Procter & Gamble

Every 70’s and 80’s teenage girl had one of these! You could change the light setting to day, office, evening and home so you could see what your face would look like in different lighting.

  1. Nedmark says:

fantastic post! my mom had one, but this photo looks like an updated model. I liked the sound of the shifting gears (or whatever it was) when changing the light setting.

  2. meuba says:

hahahah I had one of these and thought i was awesome! Oh yea this mirror really helped my makeup chin line when i was in the 7th grade. haha

  3. panda says:

bahahaha, my grams still has one of those!

  4. Tag says:

Oh wow! I had one of these and had completely forgotten about it! I don’t remember mine having the extra outlet in front. That would have helped with my curling iron collection!

  5. MarillTachiquin says:

OMG! My mom had one of those!! I loved to change the light colors just for fun and imaging how was that possible (I was 6 xP).

Now she uses a different mirror because she can’t see that well =P

    • Casa says:

My great aunt has one that looks just like this, I belive the mirror flips and the back side is a 10X magnafacation…. ahYUP!

  6. bz says:

Not only was this great – I still have mine – the selector knobs are broken, but the lights still work fine. I love this thing!!

  7. Harvey says:

I had that, plus 2 sets of electric rollers.

  8. Allison says:

My mom has one of these! Only hers has like…doors on the front.

  9. Leah says:

XD OMG. I have one of these, but it’s an older model. Light settings ftw |D

  10. Lily says:

As a kid I was sitting in my mom’s lap as she used this mirror. I kept wondering was those slots were for (the outlet holes) so I picked up my mom’s eyebrow tweezers, stuck them in the holes, ruined the mirror, and we had to go to the breaker box to get the power back on!

    • Bre says:

Hahaha!! I did the EXACT same thing when I was little. I thought the two little bars of the outlet were the perfect size for my mom’s tweezers! She still has the mirror, but clearly the outlet no longer works. lol

  11. daveslady57 says:

I still have one of these. The outlet on the front is handy for curling irons.

  12. Miroku says:

I think everyone knew someone who had one of these.

I always loved messing with the light settings.

  13. zip zop zoopity bop says:

There’s still one of those things around my house somewhere.

  14. singingforjoy says:

I must be old. I STILL have mine, and it works just fine!

    • amethystkat says:

yeah, me too, although I think mine is actually OLDER than this model. I do still use it though, and the lights have never gone out. Although, now that I have posted this, they will.

  15. Ashikins says:

I’m in college and I use the hand-me-down one my mom gave me (it has doors in the front). My friends invite themselves over to use it when we get dressed up. :D

did anyone use any other selection besides “day”? lol i sure don’t.

  16. Mason says:

Apparently I’m not the only one who still has a mirror like this at home. I personally don’t use it, but my mom does.

  17. MirMir says:

My mom had one of these until she broke it. Though hers had the wing mirrors, spelled out the names of the settings and had a slightly different on switch that you had to hold down until the lights caught. She complained for years about not being able to find one with an outlet on the front. I did eventually find one for her though. I was her hero for months.

  18. cff says:

I loved mine and actually used all those settings. Funny now.

  19. Amethyst42 says:

I wanted one SO BAD! My friend’s mom had one, and I used to sneak into her bedroom whenever I could to see how my face changed with the different light settings.

  20. nibbles says:

I so had one of these. It did not teach me about make-up at all. Pink light means dusk! Green/blue means nightlife! White light is day! Yeah. Awesome. Thanks for making me look diseased.

  21. ladycoco says:

my nan still has one! i used to love using it when i was little while i practised putting nan’s lipstick all over my face!

  22. Tori W says:

I still have something like that! My mom gave it to me when she was cleaning out her closet. It has a flippable mirror, with one side normal and one side magnified. The normal side broke but I still use the magnified side occasionally – it’s great for plucking those tiny little eyebrow hairs that you can’t see very well normally.

  23. sarah says:

I’m on probably my third or fourth one since teenagerhood (I’m 41). They were all slightly different but the same idea. The one I have now has the outlet on front, side mirrors and yes, that magnifying mirror on the other side that I can’t imagine anyone ever using….

  24. Momcat says:

I still have one! My 17 yr old now uses it. LOL

  25. SG says:

Still have my older model of this that I got when I was 13, tho I pretty much never wear makeup anymore so I don’t use it LOL.

  26. Jessi says:

My mom and aunt had one of these. My mom kept hers and I discovered it when I was 14. It was what I learned to pluck my eyebrows on. I found that under certain light, you could find those fine little hairs that you missed under the other lights! My face always looked best under the “outdoor” setting…haha. My eyebrows were (and still are) amazing thanks to this makeup mirror!

  27. mojojo says:

Eeeee!! My mom had one, and I got one in 6th grade. Rite of passage gift??? LOL. Not like I needed the “nightlife” red setting at 11. LMAO. The doors finally fell off. :(

  28. powermuffin says:

On my old lighted mirror, the green tint was labeled as “Office”. It was impossible to make yourself look good under that light! I remember wondering how office workers managed to overcome that hideous green cast.

Thinking about it now, schools are lit with the same type of lighting as offices and it did not look like a zombie uprising. Blood sucking parasites, maybe, but not zombies.

On the flip side, it was darn near impossible to look bad under the pink “Evening” toned light.

  29. momsgayson says:

my mom still has one. i believe she still sets it up to this day but the lights on the side had a more prismatic look to them. then flip the mirror over for a closeup look. still takes me back…

  30. Teal says:

omg i have one of these and i’m 18, and i love it! but i recently had to take it apart to fix it, and sadly havent put it back together quite yet. mine looks a little different than this one though. I LUV IT!

  31. Sarah Webb says:

OMG!!! I HAVE one of those things! I never used it for makeup because it seemed so freaking nerdy but holy crap I HAVE one in my closet! LOL!

  32. Gordon says:

My wife still has her “older” model from more than 40 years ago. No wings or outlet on the front. Both bulbs have been replaced once along with other minor repairs.

  33. Phil says:

While I’m not a teenager…or a girl… I do remember either my mom or sister having one of these. I distinctly remember how my brown hair looked greenish in florescent light.

Don’t have to worry about that anymore since it’s mostly gray.

  34. Katie says:

My theatre group has one of these in the makeup room, but with doors on the front :) I was playing with it backstage last week!

  35. julzmsu says:

This isn’t nostalgic! I have one of these, and I’m not even 30. Sheesh… The mirror still works well, why get another one? Btw, I keep mine on day.

  36. sillyme says:

I have one from the 70s, and stashed it away as I got newer, cooler ones. When they died, I hauled this one out and used it until I got a replacement. In fact, it’s on my vanity now!

  37. MerryMarjie says:

I still use mine every day, and yes, the front outlet makes a great place to put your blow dryer or curling iron. The only trouble is that the mirror must have warped or something because I can barely recognize the old face in the mirror!
