Epic Win: Mallrats
Submitted by Stacey R, schooner
The second film from Kevin Smith’s “View Askewniverse” — and a spirited successor to his breakout hit Clerks — Mallrats was my favorite Kevin Smith film for a long time. Now, my favorite is Jersey Girl. KIDDING!
Worth noting: Mallrats featured an awesome Stan Lee cameo before Stan Lee cameos were lame.

Ah, the internetz, teaching everyone to count in ordinal numbers. *sniff*
So proud…
What a cast! Ben Affleck, Shannon Doherty, Jeremy London, Jason Lee, Claire Forlani, and Joey Lauren Adams. It just makes me feel so 90s.
The only thing I disagree with in the description is the idea that Stan Lee cameos could ever be lame!
SNOOCHIE BOOCHIES!!! hehe. Surf Wisely.
now I have to watch this to find out why Jay was beating up the easter bunny
I love this movie! I live my life by one of the quotes from this movie. “Touch not lest ye be touched.”
By the way, it’s not a sailboat. If you pause it, you’ll see it’s a line of hearts, starts and spheres.
FLY FAT MAN FLY
You’ve gotta be kidding me. I love Kevin Smith movies, but this one is a total POS. The big studio loved Clerks and gave him a bunch of money to make this one, which he obviously just spent on beer. Ever seen a movie where one scene just seemed tacked on? This whole movie was tacked on. Should have ended after the coming attractions. The only good thing about this movie is the phrase “dirt mall” which I now use to refer to my local flea market.
“KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!! SNOOTCHIE BOOTCHIES!!!” Classic…
NP, not to start anything, but the whole point is, even if you think it’s crap, YOU WATCHED IT! Not to mention taking ‘dirt mall’ and using it in your own lexicon…
I agree that Mallrats wasn’t a masterpiece like Clerks, or even Dogma (my fave KS movie…), but Kev isn’t out to dethrone Spielberg or Lucas. He does what he does, it makes him happy, and filthy rich, besides. While most of the film industry is struggling with original content (look at all the franchise ‘reboots’ out there, or all the classic 80’s rip-offs… Not much original content there, mate.) Kevin’s movies, vulgar as they can be at times, are at least his own. Yeah, the thinly veiled parodies, and whatnot are all there, but at least they’re not as drawn out and over-hyped as the boring-as-hell ‘Scary Movie/Epic Movie/WTF-Ever Movie’ franchise that’s rotting away at the comedy genre like a mega-tumor…
To coin a phrase from another Jersey guy, ‘Ya Love Em; Ya Hate Em; You’ll Never Forget Em.’
now do 20 crunches before zod one before zod…two before zod…
I remember when they were filming this at my local mall (Eden Prairie Center in Eden Prairie, MN). We had a lot of fake stores set up all around the mall. In particular I remember being in the mall when they filmed the Easter Bunny getting beaten up.
One of my KS faves.
It gave the world Stinkpalm, dirt mall, touch not lest ye be touched, the Cousin Walter story, it’s not a sailboat it’s a schooner, you tell ‘em Steve Dave, third nipples, that kid is BACK on the escalator, I could go on like this for days..
For the record, it’s FLY FAT ASS!! FLY!!
I seriously had a Halloween party once where my boyfriend and brother dressed up as Jay and Silent Bob. Completely unplanned, a friend of a friend showed up in an Easter Bunny suit, unaware of their planned costumes as well. The second he saw them, he took off running into the parking lot of our apartment complex. Classic.
