I totally had Squand! Boy, was my mother mad when I poured it down the drain after playing with it… That was a fun thing to explain to the plumber.
I once put it in a fishtank to make cool obstacle courses for fish…
Yeah. Not such a great idea
I had this as a child, and I totally have zero memories of playing with it. It kind of fell to the wayside of my toys days.
However, the commercial is totally kickass. I wish companies would do more like this today.
Pretty sure that stuff was made of lead, asbestos and plutonium… It wiped out entire villages in China, but it was super cool when you dumped it in water!
I love the “I just can’t get it wet” line at about 0:16 into the commercial. My mind totally went straight into the gutter on that one. Especially with the follow up of the little girl asking how it works and the “scientist” saying he doesn’t know.
Man, I forgot about this.
But thanks for pointing that part out… that will now haunt me for a few days.
i cant get it wet!!!
I totally remember watching legends of the hidden temple and the kid that won got a bike and some tickets to universal studios or something awesome, and the kid who came in second place got… some sqand.
Nifty stuff. For people who don’t know how it works and are annoyed by that, the details are at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_sand
Basically, it’s sand coated in a silicon compound that resists bonding to water strongly enough to keep artsy towers intact.
There’s also a link there telling you how to make your own magic sand using ScotchGuard spray.
The other version of this stuff was Magic Sand, the packaging was a genie’s bottle.

Yes!! And I nearly wept when I found it! I LOVED squand! I bought 3 bottles and had a ball. Not easy to get back in the bottles though.
I’m sure it got wet…eventually…right?
Or at least the colors got meshed together into some blechy boring bland color.
I remember this, never had any though =(
Er, spelling fail? At 0:27, it clearly shows that the name of the product is “Sqand” (no ‘u’).
I had the genie bottle magic sand. I think mine was defective. We played with it once. and then had to dry it out on newpaper later to get back in the bottle. My parents then threw it out
Aw man, Swuand! i loved that comercial! My parents ended up getting it for me for Christmas a year or so after it came out and it totally kicked ass.
Then, I left it in a tank full of water for two months, and SURPRISE! THE SAND STAYED WET. FALSE ADVERTISING. IT SHOULD STAY WET FOREVER WITHOUT FAIL.
lol j/k
Huh, wonder where I was when this came out. Never heard of this stuff.
Oh, I figured out how to get it wet. But completely on accident. I decided to “dye” the sand a different color, by putting marker ink in the water. Totally ruined the sand – had to throw it out. Not like I missed it, though.
Squand was originally marketed as “Magic Sand.” Interestingly this stuff had a real purpose. Squand was designed originally to trap ocean oil spills near the shore. This would be done by sprinkling Magic Sand on floating petroleum, which would then mix with the oil and make it heavy enough to sink.
well….. that’s pretty neat, actually
I used to love this stuff! Was amazed as a kid that it never got wet!! LOL
I don’t recall this. Although my parents claim I had it.
man…. i always wanted squand. i always got jealous of the kids who won it on shows like “double dare”
(Drum roll please)
(bum-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba)
Sqand Has Returned
and it new name is called
Aqua sand
lol, I just found a whole bunch of this in my closet when I was cleaning my room over the summer. In containers, fortunately.
So of course I decided zomg, I’ve gotta try it out, but…..It was rather unentertaining. I guess I’ve gotten old.
Then again, I don’t actually remember playing with it much, if at all, when I was little, so I must not have found it all that amazingly captivating then, either.
