’80s Music Video Thursday Strikes Back

More awesomely bad music videos. Like last week, you can post other embarrassingly cheesy videos in the comments, and I’ll post a few next Thursday.

“Hey Mickey” by Toni Basil submitted by hee hee
Ohmickyousofineyoufineyousofineyoublowmymindheymickey! (x1 million)

“You Spin Me Round” by Dead or Alive submitted by Good Grief
Great song. Extremely high WTF factor in the video.

“Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” by Wham
My pick this week. George Michael dances the way I would dance if I could ever be drunk enough to wear what he’s wearing.

Incorrect source or offensive?

» 30 Blasts From The Past

  1. Aphrodite says:

You spin me right round, baby, right round, like a record baby! I love that song! But all covers of it are worthless.

    • Good Grief says:

It is a fabulous song, and its video is so terrible it makes me laugh! :D

      • Aphrodite says:

Indeed, it is so funny, but Pete burns was hot in that time, I think it is really too bad he’s a woman now, but as long as he’s happy I’m happy, and he still performs, that is the best!

        • forge says:

He was so, so pretty then, and he got that horrific plastic surgery bug and now he looks like a carnival sideshow. It’s very very sad.

  2. Rosey says:

I really need to constantly press “repeat” on Hey Mickey. That song is legend, and the cheerleaders just make it even better. <3

  3. Pennyforth says:

Nothing says “bad 80s video” better than a Kidd Video original!

    • leslie says:

OH MY GAWD!! i remember that cartoon show i used to get up early every Saturday to watch it. now thats a blast from the past.

  4. Jon says:

What did George Michael say to the undercover cop in the men’s room?

“Jack me off before you go go!”

  5. Jeff G says:

The one thing I always liked about the Wham! video was the t-shirts the backup singers had on, which mocked the t-shirts worn by Frankie Goes To Hollywood in their “Relax” video.

The FGTH shirts said “Frankie Says Relax – Don’t Do It.” This video countered with “I Don’t Care What Frankie Says.” :P

  6. CosmykDolfyn says:

This one will blow your mind. It should have a warning that says it can give you seizures…No wonder Tommy Shaw didn’t want to be in it. The music video for Music Time by Styx!

  7. Miroku says:

    How about some Thomas Dolby?

    Or A Flock of Seagulls.

    Or Gary Numan?

    Men Without Hats?

Or Starship featuring the worst song ever.

    • forge says:

I can’t see videos at the office but I assume the “worst song ever” is We Built This City. ::shudder:: I have to go lobotomize myself now so I can re-forget that song ever existed.

Dolby is a god and why, why, WHY did/does anyone ever only play “Cars” from Gary Numan? The guy’s been touring for 25 years and he is one of the best musicians currently living on this planet. He’s got a track called “Down in the Park” that’s wonderful.

    • Basara says:

I saw that the A Flock of Seagulls video had a link to the song I wanted to see the video of, unfortunately it wasn’t the same one I remembered – he one I remembered had much less band presence, and much more of the sci-fi set (and a lot more ofthe guy trying to recreate an image of the girl he was wishing for).

  8. SPark says:

My favorite part is the way every time they pan out over the crowd it’s obviously that their mob of extras are bored out of their little minds. XD

  9. forge says:

    1) Toni Basil is a goddess. She is now 65 years old and still working as a choreographer either on or off-Broadway. She is and has always been nothing but amazing.

    2) Pete Burns. What a pretty, pretty, freaky, pretty man. He had nicer legs than Debbie Reynolds for Chrissake – and Debbie had some gams, man. A better video was “I’ll Do Anything” which really showcases just how much Burns makes Boy George look like Ronald Fricking Reagan.

    3) Yeah, none of us knew George Michael was gay. OH GIVE ME A BREAK.

    • Tom1969ca says:

I was going to point that out about Toni’s age, too. If you do the math, she was 39 (yes, T-H-I-R-T-Y N-I-N-E) when she made this video!

I was 13 when this came out; if I’d known the cheerleader I thought was so hot was actually older than my mother… ah, who am I kidding. She’d still have been hot!

  10. Ziddleping says:

    Where’s the Safety Dance?!

  11. Kathryn in NZ says:

if it’s the 80s then you need some Devo
or some Downunder with Split Enz and MiSex.
Oh – Madness with “Baggy Trousers”

    LOL.
    Thanks for the great website.

  12. CosmykDolfyn says:

Ahhh…since you have long list of potentials, I come back with another long list…

I love this song, and this video aint really cheezy, just creepy.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2px6ZI5vMUA

I have to ask what was going on here…The entire band dies and is brought back in odd ways…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpdZvewjwJs

This was a classic way to mix up the meaning of a song even more and make a fool of yourself in the process.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbt30UnzRWw

I still never figured this one out…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWvzZCZF1gw

And, how come it works out that your only really odd nonsensical video is to your biggest hit?

  13. Kristin says:

Loved Mickey! Was one of my favorites as a kid. I was so excited that there was a song about…Mickey Mouse LOL! Hey I was just a kid (80s kid awesomeness)

  14. Shadow says:

Get this. The singer of “Spin me Round” had a sex change.

  15. Razor says:

Ahh, yes. When MTV still had actual MUSIC.

(tease me about my age and I’ll beat you with my cane)

  16. UberOops.com says:

This post is like the early days of MTV! Even before that when the played music videos on friday and saturday late nights on PBS, then MTV came along…

    Epic WIN!!!!

  17. Jennifer says:

They use to play that Hey Mickey song over and over.

  18. Kitty says:

You want an epically bad video from the 80’s? “Kings of the Wild Frontier” by Adam Ant. Ugh! The band did NOT want to do a video, and this video proves it. I wish I could link it somewher, but I’ll leave that to someone else. Oh, and his “Antmusic” is almost as bad, especially for the bored extras, but at least the video quality is better.

  19. FAIL-IEN says:

Some Jackass sent me to this site called Phonetrace.org that had a video with DoA’s “You Spin me Right Round (Like A Record)” playing in the background. Now every time I hear that song I think of that Phonetrace video!
