Epic Win: Hocus Pocus

Submitted and Written by Joulia B

I will never understand why this movie wasn’t a HUGE HIT. It’s a classic. I never get tired of it. I had to buy this DVD for my movie collection.

Definitely underrated. This cast is a win: Bette Middler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy (voice of Peggy on King of the Hill).

  1. Moygo says:

I LOVE this movie, I watch it every October to help me get in the Halloween mood. Truly a classic!!!

    • melini says:

I watch it every Hallowe’en too! I’ve loved this movie for yeaaars.

      • RayneNagashi says:

        I looooooove this movie too!!!!!!

      • Zoreta says:

Ditto! At my house, instead of watching the same Christmas specials every year, we watch the same Halloween specials every year- halloweentown, Hocus Pocus, Charlie Brown… Oh the memories!

Hocus Pocus is one of my favorite, for nothing else, the ‘Come Little Children’ song.

        • Sarah Webb says:

I love that song so much! The funniest part is, Sarah is my name too! I used to sing it at night in my garden and creep myself out.

  2. Holden says:

Not to mention Doug Jones as Zombie and a young Sean Murray (McGee from “NCIS”) as the heroic immortal cat!

  3. Maggie says:

Aaaaaamok amok amok amok amok amok

  4. CHASITY says:

I WATCH THIS MOVIE EVERY TIME IT COMES ON TV. EVEN IF ITS JULY!!!!! I JUST LOVE IT. MY HUSBAND JUST DOESNT UNDERSTAND. I LOVE ALL OF THE HALLOWEEN MOVIES THAT ARENT HORROR FLICKS. THEY DO GET YOU IN THE SPIRIT

  5. Dustbunny says:

That was the hottest Sarah J Parker ever looked. She should always go for the bleach blond hair and tons of eye make-up look. (Except for the episode of Sex in the City where she wore a zebra print mini dress. Pretty smokin’ there too)

  6. Sara says:

So…you know the part where they are saying they are going to sacrifice a virgin? I was watching this movie with my parents when I was 7 or so, and asked “what’s a virgin?” Not awkward at all….Sorry, random memory…

    • Bob says:

Haha! I remember asking about what a virgin was and I ended up being told that it was someone who’d never been kissed. :/

      • Chrysta says:

That doesn’t seem like such a smart idea. You could have come home after your first kiss and said you weren’t a virgin anymore… That would be a nice shock.

  7. Kwiggy says:

I love this movie!!!!!!!! It’s my all time fav. I watch it every October.

  8. ThirdLaw says:

Actually this movie is somewhat an underground hit in the gay community. We all love it.
    1) The three stars are huge gay icons in real life
    2) It’s about old bitches becoming youthful while being rude to kids
    3) One of the witches is slutty
    4) Bette Midler breaks out into a pretty fantastic song in the middle of the movie
    5) It’s about Halloween, probably the best gay holiday of the year
    6) The mother dresses up like Madonna (when Madonna wasn’t a complete psycho and was at her peak)

…The list goes on and on.

    • feath says:

I watch it at least once a year, JUST for that song in the middle…

Thank you, max, for that MARVALOUS introduction…

  9. Miroku says:

I enjoyed it as a kid, and still get a kick out of it when I see it every so often.

  10. Cecona says:

I watch this every Halloween when it’s played on TV. It’s been my favorite Halloween movie since I was a little kid.

  11. greenduckiesgirl says:

Anytime my roommate says the word amuck, I start bouncing all over the place and saying “amuck, amuck, amuck!” I see I’m not the only one.

Great movie, I love it so much. I think Bette Midler is fantastic.

  12. DiabloNeonX says:

This movie was probably the last time Sarah Jessica Parker was attractive.

  13. mrsbmw says:

So this movie gave me AWFUL nightmares as a kid… something about immortal witches sucking the life out of little girls… I dunno… haha but I’m thinking now that I really need to watch it as an adult… you know, face your fears :) Thanks for giving me the courage, people who like it!

  14. JayPea says:

For a Disney flick it is dang good and not a remake of some previous, much better, Disney hit. They should do that more often!

  15. Bunnymuffin says:

My teenager hates it when I start chanting, “Amok, amok, amok!” and bounce up and down. But he agrees the movie is a major Halloween win.

“I Put a Spell on You” was one of the best parts of the movie, next to Binks of course.

  16. CMS2004 says:

One of my favorite movies OF ALL TIME. I practically wore out my VHS copy (why yes, I am THAT old). But, I have to disagree with the person above who said the guy who plays McGee on NCIS played the cat… Thackery Binx was played by Omri Katz, while McGee is played by Sean Murray. Both are awesome, though. :o )

    • AriGriffin says:

Omri Katz played Max Dennison, the kid that brought the witches back. Sean Murray was the actor for the human version of Thackery Binx.

    • wlkingbluepirate says:

Ummm, I’m sorry, but no. Thackery Binx was played by Sean Murray. Omri Katz played Max Dennison. Imdb it.

Anyway, I do love this movie. I watch it every October when the leave start changing, and it is about that time. I think I might watch it this weekend. :)

      • k-chan says:

Yes, Sean Murray was Thackery Binx, and Omri Katz was Max. Wow, I didn’t realize McGee was in there until I watched it again. ::swoons:: young Sean Murray! (he’s still adorable!)

  17. ohheyy_monet says:

    “Winnie?!”

I might also add that I have done the Sanderson Sister walk in my mall before. I freaking love this movie.

  18. Katie says:

This was my favorite movie as a kid C:

  19. S says:

Haha, I just got this in from Netflix today. Billy the Zombie was always my favorite part for some reason.

  20. Samantha says:

This was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I had it taped from The Disney Channel and watched it all of the time.

  21. Gaz says:

I literally just watched this last Friday for the first time in years. I didn’t even know we had a taped-off-a-cable-movie-channel version until my sister said so and I’m like “Let’s watch it now!”
My fiancee has a cat named Binx. I wonder how many families had a black cat named Binx since that movie’s been out…

  22. barboid says:

    *spoiler alert*

I never saw this movie, but I wanted to. They always played the ‘amok, amok’ scene & it was cute until I found out that in real life, when she was hit in the gut, her reaction was real–she had an appendicitis attack and had surgery, but they left the take in.

  23. Great movie, I love it so much. I think Bette Midler is fantastic.

  24. Ellie says:

Oh! And Jason Marsden as the voice of Binx. Mmm…Jason Marsden..But he’s not the actor of Binx. You can really tell it at the end.

Also: This movie used to scare the pants off of me when I was younger XD

  25. Candy Mountain says:

“Come little Children” that song til this day is still scarred in my brainz…. get it out, get it out.
Honeslty one of the bestest Halloween Movies there is ~(^..^)

  26. Chipmunk says:

the first time I watched it, I was terrified, and my friends and I put salt all around the bed, so the witches couldn’t get us xD

  27. Livvay says:

I got to meet Mr. Doug Jones.. he played Billy Bones and lots of other movie characters in other movies. He’s a nice guy. but this movie brings back loads of memories.

  28. Blake419 says:

Bette Midler made me afraid of buck teeth as a kid. lol

  29. mfp says:

yep, going to go buy this now…

  30. rebecca says:

i got to meet doug jones too :D i was volunteering at girl scout camp and they got him to teach the girls pantomime. he also performed the scene from hocus pocus where he cuts open his mouth and says his first lines.
i loved this movie so much! i wanted to be sarah jessica parker, i loved the part where she sang “come little children”
i still watch it without fail every halloween :]

  31. tresdjndjed says:

Okay, I really think the Amuck bit is even more viral then the cat spell, but hey… let the commenter’s speak for them selves, I have seen quite a few mention it as well…lol… but the McGee thing, that is movie trivia gold…. I would NEVER had made the connection before I saw it here….. and you know I plan on making people crazy trying to figure it out…. I wish I could view this site on my tele, with a group of like aged friends… because if I post all that I really want to share, they would all hide me…lol

  32. BBkat says:

I love this movie, and seeing this makes me want to see it again. I was sad at the end for the cat the first time I saw it.

  33. Allison says:

OMG… That’s a young McGee (from NCIS). Hehe

This movie is a yearly staple for Halloween still in my house. :-)

  34. Katherine says:

I remember we’d divide up by hair color and pretend to be the witches, reciting the lines… good times.

  35. Melissa says:

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! It’s never Halloween for me unless I watch Hocus Pocus at least once… of course, once a week in October and once on Halloween is my preference. I have got to buy this movie!!

  36. Chrysta says:

My whole family loves this movie! We watch it every Halloween.

In 1994, my sister and I both got kittens and my sister’s was black. We named him Binx. Sadly, he died two Octobers ago. I always had a hard time watching when Binx got ran over by the truck and when he dies at the end, now it’s worse. But I try to get over it because I still really like the movie.

R.I.P to all the Binxes out there.

  37. Sarah Webb says:

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! They play it every Halloween. It really is a hit, kind of a cult classic. Everybody knows what you mean when you say “hocus pocus”. Binx was the best ever, especially when he got run over by a bus and then got back up again, to everyone’s horror, and was like, “What? I can’t die, remember…?” Then when Sarah freaked out about the road thinking it was a black river. “It’s a road, it’s a road!” *jumps up and down holding the hem of her dress* lol, best movie ever.

  38. FlonkertonChamp says:

    “amuck! amuck amuck amuck!”

  39. Eyyo says:

Ahhh..the blonde Hocus Pocus witch. My first crush..
