  1. McFirst says:

    FIRST !!1!

  2. Gazerock says:

    YES!

  3. cc says:

Dead about 20 years before I was born he is by far one of my favorite artists. Wish I was alive for woodstock.

  4. paulc says:

wasn’t this just about his last performance ever?

  5. xaavier says:

he was alright. way over rated

  6. Good Grief says:

Jimi was a genuine talent – you don’t have to love his work to recognise the skill – those who knew him and were lucky enough to jam with him consider it among the best experiences of their lives.

    Jimi, and Nick Drake: both were immensely talented, and both died too young ;_;

  7. NP says:

Right-handed guitar played lefty and upside down. He was an amazing, brilliant idiot. Love it.

    • The Doctor says:

For the sake of accuracy, Hendrix did use a right-handed Fender Stratocaster (most of the time,) played left-handed, but the guitar’s nut was reversed and the instrument was re-strung left-handed. Many people believe he just flipped a “righty” over and played it stock, but the above-mentioned modifications made him slightly less superhuman than some believe.

      • Gordon K says:

Reportedly, Jimi could play a right-handed guitar upside down, in a pinch, but he definitely played a RH Strat re-nutted and re-strung for his lefty playing. Fender actually issued a left-hand Strat re-strung for righties who wanted the tonalities that Jimi got. The pickups’ placement relative to the strings is different on these re-strung instruments.

  8. Kelly Ann says:

    F*CK YEAH!

  9. rickybobby says:

Jimi was good, but Duane Allman was THE BEST. Both gone far too young. RIP, Skydog!

  10. NP says:

Duane Allman was the best at playing four-note riffs for an hour.

    • rickybobby says:

      you = fail

Rolling Stone magazine voted him #2 of all time, close second to Hendrix. These aren’t neophyte “greatest band ever” fanboys or mulleted Nuge-lovers who voted on this, but music industry professionals who have been there and heard that, so STFU.

Obviously you have listened to all of one or two Allman Bro’s songs and those were probably ones recorded AFTER Duane died and their style morphed into the ultra-long riff-laden jams. His improvisational skills and ethereal slide playing are second to none and there are very few even worthy of polishing Duane’s axe.

Duane Allman’s sound was a well-respected session player, appearing on records be artists ranging from Aretha Franklin to Wilson Pickett and jazz flautist Herbie Mann. It is also unknown how many albums he appeared on as a session musician. He often dropped by the studio and almost invariably would lend a hand to whomever was recording that day.

Considering his career lasted only 10 years (started playing publicly in 1961 at age 16 in local bands and going professional in 1965 with the Allman Joys) and the sheer volume of his work, he was certainly one of the most prolific guitarists of his era and earned the respect of seasoned veterans like Eric Clapton, who said, “I remember hearing Wilson Pickett’s ‘Hey Jude’ and just being astounded by the lead break at the end. … I had to know who that was immediately — right now.” Allman appeared on Clapton’s landmark “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” album.

Check out “At Fillmore East” (#49 of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time) before you go spouting off, NP. You are now dismissed.

      • bunghole says:

rolling stone is a huge joke. It is written for a mainstream audience, and they are really washed up now. That list sucks, I’ve seen it. They listed some BAD guitarists, and missed some great ones. don’t get me wrong, I like hendrix, but there are a lot of more skilled guitarists out there.

        • Bob says:

I LIVE in Seattle, and he rarely gets played on the radio. You’re thinking of Nirvana, THEY get too much mainstream appeal and radioplay. Hendrix went deep into every genre there is, used electronic effects only when necessary, and pushed the music genre to limits that have really not been touched since. If you played guitar, you might understand what he did. You might also understand how “electronic” effects work in music. How about you take an electric guitar, and try to play me a hard rock song with zero distortion at all. Effects are DISTORTION. You are still the one playing the notes, and they create sounds that are impossible to achieve without them. There are no effects that magically play notes and chords for you.

If you’re looking for a one-trick pony, look at SRV. He was an extremely talented guitarist, but every song he ever played sounds almost exactly the same as the next.

          • rickybobby says:

I’ve been playing guitar for 30 years.

          • rickybobby says:

I also don’t play “hard rock”. I’m a country, blues and bluegrass player who started out in local punk bands way back when.

Rock sucks and has for 20 years and the “harder” the rock, the harder it sucks. Bunch of down-tuned power-chording hair farmers. Honestly, who plays power chords in drop-D tuning other than someone trying to cover up the facxt that they really can’t play!

          • trippi bongstalking says:

The word you are looking for is not “DISTORTION”. Distortion is a specific type of electronically created effect. What you are talking about is feedback, which can be used and manipulated without the use of electronically created effects.

  11. Miroku says:

While before my time I seem to have a love hate relationship to his music.

On one hand much of it is overplayed. But on the other hand lots of little details in the songs make me enjoy it.

    • Casa says:

I’m the same way. It’s sooo over played on the classic rock stations, and I’ll almost swich the dial… then that guitar gets to me and the next thing I know I’ve got it cranked up. ^^

  12. Giz Gunnar says:

Hooray, people on the internet are trashing Jimi Hendrix! Make no mistake, all of them have more chops than Jimi. How unique!

  13. Tom says:

All Along the Watchtowers is the best cover ever!

  14. Bee says:

Always makes me wonder what he would be playing now, if he’d be alive today.

  15. Miss Malice says:

Love or hate the music you can’t deny the guys talent.
And yes I’d have to agree that All Along The Watchtower is one of the best covers EVER.

  16. FAIL-IEN says:

Am I the only one here who noticed that they spelled “Voodoo Child” wrong? BTW, I agree with the guy who says The Rolling Stone sucks; it has gone too mainstream. But I will say that while Hendrix was great, he isn’t the best. The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Jimi’s band) has only produced one album (“Are You Experienced Yet”) until Jimi OD-ed two years later. Therefore, he can’t be considered among greats who’ve produced multiple albums over the span of their career. But, again, he was a very talented guitarist that deserves recognition. WIN!

Sidenote: It’s rumored that Hendrix was from the UK. Is that true or is it some random propaganda made up because he’s black?

    • rickybobby says:

He got his true start in the UK. Be backed up a few blues musicians in the US, but made is break on his own across the pond. He was also a jump-jock in the 101st Airborne.

    • know says:

voodoo chile is a variation on voodoo child and he also produced axis bold as love, electric ladyland ,and band of gypsys while still alive

  17. me says:

You have got to be a complete idiot not to realise the greatness of Hendrix,Noone can compare to what Jimi did back then, sure there always going to be someone better nomatter who you name but theres a reason he gets the recognition he has, if you people are too stupid to understand that than go away and die because the world is better without you.

    • Gordon K says:

I’ll say this just once. You are entitled to your opinion, but that’s all it is–your opinion. People who hear things differently, hear things differently. Doesn’t make ‘em smarter or stupider than you. I happen to like Hendrix’s studio work better than his live stuff. Doesn’t mean a thing.

  18. Neverblade says:

All you Hendrix/Duane fanboys are making me a little disgusted. If you want to compare improv skills, Garcia blows either one away. His body of work is also immense. Duane had no studio experience even close to anything Jerry did. They all have their good points, but if you want to rail on about guitarists, especially ones known for their improv abilities….

Leaving out Garcia is like going to a church with no God.

  19. trippi bongstalking says:

And Django Reinhardt PWNS THEM ALLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Except Segovia.

  20. J-Dude says:

This dude is seriously my idol!!

  21. Tom says:

    GREATEST…WIN…EVAR!!!
