Epic Win: The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show

Submitted and Written by Kim D

Though I’m not old enough to remember seeing Rocky and Bullwinkle on TV, I still have my VHS collection. Many rainy days were spent watching Rocky and Bullwinkle continually outwit Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. Anyone else remember when the Civil War met football in the Wossamatta U story arc?

Incorrect source or offensive?

  1. Good Grief says:

Rocky: But that trick never works!
    Bullwinkle: This time for sure!

    <3

  2. KC says:

I remember back in September 1979 I sat down to watch this show, and my Mom said “Time to go to school.” I turned off the TV, wondering if this “school” thing would be over before the episode was done. After 19 years of school and university, I turned the TV back on… and not only did I miss that entire episode, the series was canceled. What will I do now? :(

  3. starcat says:

The Wossamatta U story arc was brilliant. I used to watch this with my dad when it was originally aired. He’d laugh, I’d laugh, but never at the same time. Only later did I see the episode that is now my favorite:

Rocky (looking at the other team with the blonde wigs): But they’re a bunch of girls! How much fun can you have with girls?
Bullwinkle (looking directly at the camera): Oh, this is a family cartoon, isn’t it?

Correct my memory if I’m wrong!

  4. hee hee says:

(get the dvds) I LOVE THESE!!!! I DVDS of a season… need to find more. :) Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!!! RAAAAWWWR!!! I gotta get me a new hat! And now for something you’ll REALLY like! Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman with their wonderful WAYBACK machine!!!! Twisted history! :)

  5. Jeff G says:

And you had to love Boris’s cheerleading for the school…

    Wassamata U! HEY! Wassamatta U!

  6. Jon says:

Bullwinkle sees Natasha, pretending to be upset…

Bullwinkle: (to himself) According to the Hero’s Manual, I should always help a damsel in distress. (to Natasha) Excuse me, miss, are you in distress?

Natasha: Dis dress… dat dress… who cares? I’m distraught!

Bullwinkle: I wonder what the manual says about damsels in distraught…

  7. brainfire says:

My mama (rest her soul) would call me inside to watch Rocky and Bullwinkle. She told me later that it was because she didn’t want to be caught watching it alone and laughing! :-)

  8. uber says:

hey rocky watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat

    oops wrong hat

    and the village rejoiced

  9. mew2 says:

YESYESYES!!! “Nuthin’ up mah sleeve…” And William Conrad was flawless as the narrator. R&B was one of my favorites, along with Tennessee Tuxedo, Underdog, and Go Go Gophers. I can’t think of the names of the 2 old guys that would occasionally pop up on R&B (was one of them Chauncey?) and comment back and forth, starting with one of them observing, “Now there’s something you don’t see every day…”

    • forge says:

Are you talking about Statler and Waldorf from the Muppet Show?

      • mew2 says:

No…these guys weren’t hecklers, more like bystanders–pretty sure the one was named Chauncey. One of them would say, “There’s something you don’t see every day,” and the other guy would ask, “What’s that, Chauncey?” Then the first guy would tell what he saw R&B doing…for example: “A moose and a squirrel in a rowboat.” C’mon guys, I CAN’T be the only one who remembers them, can I?

  10. hee hee says:

I understand the reason they kept with the ‘join us next time when…’ stuff was because they didn’t really have a lot of plot and had to stretch it out with other stuff…. but I LOVED my R&B!!!

  11. Cisco54 says:

Extremely Epic Win! I can’t believe nobody mentioned ‘Fractured Fairy Tales’ or ‘Aesop’ yet, though. Fairy Tales was my favorite part of the show, and the entire plot was usually a set up for a bad pun, delivered by Edward Everett Horton – awesome. (One comes to mind where the whole thing, set in the Kingdom of Ubechia, set up the end line of “Ubechia Boots!” Still makes me smile. : )

  12. Samosa says:

I used to get R&B tapes from a library years ago…good times, good times. Whatever happened to quality cartoons now?

  13. jularh says:

Awesome! This show is one of the few things I remember watching as a child. To this day, everything I know about fairy tales comes from R&B!

  14. Rohvannyn says:

Boris: “My fortress is impregnababbabb… my fortress is impregnababubab… it is a fortress that is very hard to get in to.”

I remember one epic time when my mom wanted to start class for the day (I was home schooled) and my dad said we should wait till after Rocky and Bullwinkle was over. He wanted to watch it, and to this day he says it was part of my education.

  15. seoulless says:

LOL, this is awesome. My dad, being the joker that he is, actually named me Natasha after Natasha Fatale! Explains my evil disposition… ^___^

  16. dissodatore says:

it takes a very sophisticated mind to love moose and squirrel, honest!!

  17. Fidra says:

I want to vote for this as the best Nostalgia. Ever. I remember laughing at it as a child….then watching it later on as an adult…Yeh, I’m sure I laughed at different places. The Way Back Machine has a lot to answer for, as it was one of those building blocks that led me to enjoy Science Fiction (and later…history) I think I can safely say that Rocky & Bullwinkle are indirectly responsible for the fact I’m about to begin studying to be an archaeologist. Better late than never. Oh, dear me, I just realised…Bullwinkle means something different in England. I shall never be able to look at him again without giggling.

  18. knightsintodreams says:

    the mountain of upsi-dazium~!!

btw, i think the ending of that quote went something like:

Bulliwinkle: wow this really is a family cartoon, isn’t it? You play PARCHIZZI of course~!!!

yes, i lovee this show as a kid, then REALLY loved it as an adult hahaha
what about Fractured Fairy tales? those were my favorite~
“he has a nose like a casaba melon!!”

  19. Casa says:

My parents watched this growing up, and I got to watch it at about the same age thanks to the 90’s Nick at Night.
Dudley Doright was my fave. ^^

  20. RCIAG says:

To this day I can’t hear a Russian accent & not want to ask them to say “moose & skvirrul.”

  21. Tarkas says:

Definite Epic WIN. The thing that I’m curious about is the theme music behind the titles. I remember it as being a lot grander and more orchestral — real marching band stuff — but my DVDs have the same relatively puny music as the clip shown here. Since I’m darn certain that the “Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends” logo was not the one used in the original show, I suspect that the credits have been reworked — why, I have no idea. Anyone know for sure, or is my ageing memory playing me false?

    • mew2 says:

I was wondering about that, too. The version at the very end of the posted clip is the one I remember them having, with Rocky swooping through the air as Bullwinkle plummets toward the ground…

  22. Kristen says:

    Moose and squirrel!!

  23. J Marx says:

Of course I remember Wossamotta U! I still kind of want to attend, but I can’t find their department of admissions.

  24. Juniper Jupiter says:

    My favorite lines..(and I don’t know why)…

Boris (in a rowboat with Natasha): STROKE! STROKE! STROKE!

Bullwinkle (ahead in a LEAKY rowboat with Rocky): BAIL! BAIL! BAIL!

    :D

  25. LadyBelle says:

I am almost 30 years old. My dad used to watch Rocky and Bullwinkle as a kid. I bought the collection that was released on VHS. Now my kids have watched every episode that HULU has an beg for more. That is the sign of a true classic. The humor and enjoyment speak to both kids and adults for multiple generations.

  26. Idat says:

Just into my 20’s and I can still remember watching this one weekday evenings on YTV, loved Professor Peabody and his boy Sherman. It’s still on on the retro channels and continued to make my day every chance I get to watch it. Fractured Fairytales are a hoot

  27. Kiersten says:

BEST. CARTOON. EVER! I want to see the movie soooooooo badly! Or at least buy the VHS’s or DVDs! Two of my fave quotes:

Natasha: I told you we should’ve gotten the lion suit with the buttons!
    Boris: Oooooh, Roar!
    Natasha: What’s that mean, darling?
Boris: It’s lion talk for “SHUT UP YOUR MOUTH!”

    (From “Pottsylvania Creeper”)
Boris: Well, i guess that’s it, Natasha!
    Natasha: Squirrel is kaput?
Boris: Yes! This’ll show Fearless leader who’s smarter: him or me!
Fearless Leader: So which is it, Badenov?
Boris (nervously): Him! Him! You! You!

  28. Sir Scarfalot says:

Okay, mom and I are having a debate over the opening sequence. When bullwinkle is in the Rolls-royce, he autographs his name as something that isn’t bullwinkle, because “thats hard to spell!”

Anyway, the question is what is it? I hear John Stevens but mom hears John Smith. We can’t seem to agree on which one it is!! So reply and tell us!!

*psst* back me up here! I’m sure it’s stevens!!! :)

  29. vragova says:

This has got to be the best cartoon ever. I blame Rocky & Bullwinkle, as well as my dad, who watched them with me, for giving me the wierd sense of humour that I have.

  30. Twink says:

I am old enough to remember watching The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show when it was on prime time TV on Thursday nights in the early 1960’s. Some fan mail from some flounder? My favorite line.

  31. Kiki says:

Again, BEST. CARTOON. EVER. And now, more of my fave quotes:

    Boris: STROKE! STROKE! STROKE!
    Bullwinkle: BAIL! BAIL! BAIL!

Bullwinkle: Poor kid, he’s been in the woods too long. He’s gone fir crazy!

    Capt. Peachfuzz: What was that?
Boris: That’s me! I’m a ventriloqui – ventri- I can throw my voice!

Rocky: Sir Hilary (who’s actually Boris in disguise), You’ve been leading us in circles!
Boris: CIRCLES?! Impossible! Besides, these aren’t your friends’ footprints.
    Rocky: They’re not?
Boris: Nyet! They’re the prints of the most feared creature in Pottsylvania!
    Rocky and Bullwinkle: You mean…?
Boris: Yes! They’re the tracks of the abobinoma-b-b-ble snowman!

Bullwinkle: The second most effective way to get hiccups is over-exertion! Ready?
    Boris: Ready.
Bullwinkle:(Fires starting gun) GO!….2 hours on the concrete path! Did you get the hiccups?
Boris: No, but I got the Davis cup, the Mustasche cup, the Gold cup, AND a cup of coffee!

I love the moose and squirrel. They’ve taught me things like how to get hiccups, swimming can be fun, and how to mispronounce abominable (ok, THAT one I can blame that on Boris ;) )
