Epic Win: Parkay Margarine Commercials
Submitted and Written by Jennifer B
I had this memory flash back to me while in the grocery store today. The old Parkay commercials with the talking tubs.
Before I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! (yes, the exclamation point is part of the brand name), Kraft was trying to fool people into thinking Parkay Margarine was, in fact, just as good as real butter… with the use of terrifying talking containers.
Deacon Jones is also awesome. There’s a reason they nicknamed him the “Secretary of Defense.”

So THIS is where it came from!
Believe it or not, one of the original “butter/Parkay” voices was William Shatner!
Michael Bell was the voice of Parkay in the 70’s.
(William Shatner did ads for Promise Margarine.)
Shows you can have great creativity without great expense. I’m betting all they did to make the tub talk was tie some fishing line to it and pull on the line. No fancy CGI!
Yeah, there are better examples…
There are better example, but this one just sticks in your head. Does Parkay even still exist?
Ahhh, 70’s. People were afraid margarine wouldn’t taste like butter. Some even believed their microwave was radiation-ridden, or, I guess “radical”.
“Butter. What? Butter. Huh?? Butter. DON’T MESS WITH ME!! I KNOW YOU’RE MARGARINE!” -lol
I loved these! I used to do a really good margarine-tub voice (lol) as a kid.
