Epic Win: Mother’s Cookies

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by M Martinez, photo courtesy of Ephemeron

Mother’s Cookies was founded in 1914, and eventually shut down in late 2008. The company was responsible for the classic Mother’s Circus Animal Cookies, which were brought back to supermarket shelves by Kelloggs earlier this year.

  1. xavier says:

yeah!!!!!!!!!! too bad they got bought out. but they tried to bring them back and now offer only circus and chocalate chip. man the best ones were when all the cookies were mixed, except the vanilla wafers.

  2. oboros says:

    they… shut… DOWN??? :(

    • MWahatten says:

Holy crap, I’m not the only one wondering that. BOO to shutting down!

    • Crossfire905 says:

My reaction was more like “zOMFGWTFBBQ THEY {EXPLETIVE DELETED} SHUT DOWN???!!!,” but… Damn. That’s news to me. :-<

Which, I guess, shows how often I buy cookies…

  3. bodo says:

We were very disappointed when they shut down, but we’re able to get Taffys, double-fudge, English tea etc. here again (yay!).

  4. Charles says:

So Kelloggs drove them out of business just so they could control them?
Always doubt the motives of a corporation larger than the federal government.

  5. remolay says:

    they tasted like crud anyway

  6. KnucklesE says:

That picture is making me hungry just looking at it!

  7. Samosa says:

    I’ve always loved these!
Too bad my parents rarely bought them…

  8. Miroku says:

They brought them back in full force. My store stocks all the key brands from the Circus Animal Cookies to my personal favorite Iced Oatmeal.

Best thing to come out over Oakland I say.

  9. rickybobby says:

I was a truck driver for them, but I got fired because I wasn’t very good at my job.

I was a bad Mother trucker.

  10. yasoup says:

My dad got my big brother a whole bag of pink and white frosted circus animal cookies–a treat rarer than a sober Irishman–for completing his SAT’s (that he would score high was a given). My sister and I, both younger, were superjealous. My dad didn’t even tell my brother to share–just that they were my brother’s cookies and we’d only get them if my brother chose to share them. I think we got a few. *GRUMBLESTEAMJEALOUSANGRY* :p

  11. Gazerock says:

Good god those circus animal cookies are my most favorite cookies EVER. I could eat a big bag of the in a day. but my mom hardly ever buys them.

  12. alli says:

their iced raisin cookies were fantastic! nauseatingly sweet and quite gross if overeaten, but delicious anyway. :D

  13. Kelly Ann says:

Circus Animal Cookies remind me of Sunday School, because my Sunday School teacher use to give them to us as a snack. <3

  14. barboid says:

These were my favorite brand. Then they came out with flaky flix. Chocolate and vanilla stack waffle cookies covered in fudge and rolled in cornflakes. I wonder if those will come back, too?

Kellogs didn’t kill Mothers. Mothers cookies were bought out by many companies including Archway. When Archway was bought by Catterton partners, they filed for bankruptcy and closed the plants so abrubtly that there was a public outcry. This all happened about a year ago. Here’s one link: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/10/09/BU6413DQQO.DTL

  15. antionnette says:

The neighbor across the street drove a big Mothers cookie truck, which was unfortunate in the long run, as I had to see giant perfect super detailed cookies every time I looked out the front window…and crave them.

  16. BRMbug says:

…And the masses rejoiced, and all was good. Yea.
When I first saw that they were back in stores, I bought a bag of them. A few days later when I went on a milk run, they were completely sold out of the Circus Animals, but nearly fully stocked on all the other varieties. It took nearly a month before I saw some more in.

  17. mizz kitteh says:

I was so sad when I heard they were shut down! But I can still find the cookies here. I LOVE the Halloween circus animals! Dunno why. Who am I kidding, I love the regular ones just as much.
The pink camels are all mine. Do not touch those pink camels. Mine.

  18. billytheskink says:

Circus Animals are the best, but I still miss their Dinosaur Grahams.

Why buy other graham crackers when you can buy graham crackers that are shaped like dinosaurs?

  19. QuoteMan says:

Now, are these American? Because I’ve never seen them in Canada… They look Awesome!

  20. Indian says:

    Your moms cookies taste better

  21. Anonymous says:

back in my day we painted them brown to symbolize ethnic diversity and
cultural intolerance for illegal immigration and that extra mole sauce on your
ranchero burrito that made you crap for DAYS.

  22. zarchasmpgmr says:

I just bought a bag last night. The Mother’s section was fully stocked, including iced oatmeal and the raisin ones. Now if Kellogg’s would just bring back Archway apple oatmeal cookies, then I’d be in nostalgic heaven (and about 20 pounds heavier).

I also noticed that Nabisco is now selling similar cookies. The only reason why I noticed is that someone had put a bag (smaller by two ounces) up with the Mother’s on the higher shelf and obviously taken a bag of the latter…at 90 cents more. (For the non-math whizzes, the difference was about 1.2 cents/ounce.)

  23. madlibs says:

I’m not a big fan of the animal cookies (they taste like wax and cardboard), but when I heard the taffys were gone I cried myself to sleep. Ah, the cookiety, coconutyness of them :P . They’re even better with a cup of Earl Grey tea. Ooo, I gots to get me some soon.

  24. Kat says:

The worst bit about Mother’s going out of business was losing the Circus Animal cookies… Now, I know that they are being made by other companies now, but they don’t taste the same. Mother’s used a white cookie under all that delicious frosting, but the new ones are being made with a yellow cookie, and they just don’t taste right. :(

  25. Kristen says:

    They’re gone? :’(

  26. X says:

The Cookie Parade collection was a regular buy for me.

I always hated cookie snobs who disparaged Mother’s cookies.

Then again I also like those super cheap packages of chocolate/vanilla/strawberry cookie wafers with brand names you never heard of, so maybe I’m really *not* a good judge. ;-)

Sometimes I buy those “Grape” and “Cola” plain wrap soda that are 79 cents for a 2 liter bottle.

  27. ba says:

Does’ anybody remember when animal cookies had pink, white, AND chocolate animals? Don’t remember the brand. Maybe “Grandmas” (in the Northwest)

  28. QuoteMan says:

    :(

    None in Canada…. *sigh*
    They look so goooood….

  29. Courtney says:

I loved them! I remember that I had a HUGE jar of them and me and my brother would always try to steal them!

  30. Hello says:

OMG I still love these. To bad they won’t bring the old fashioned cookies or the old fashion animal crackers mmm. I would have slaughtered all of Africa because I tore off the legs and then the head and swallowed the bodies later.
    Nobody touchy the elephants…
    My elephants…
    ragmsmagm…

  31. heidi says:

i used to bed my ma to get those for me when i was a kid! too bad they almost always made me puke after i ate them, same with flint stone pushpops lol
