Epic Win: “Rock Me Amadeus”
Submitted and Written by Andrea S
My favourite quote:
“Wer sich an die 80er erinnern kann, hat sie nicht miterlebt.” (it means: “Anyone who remembers the 80s didn’t live that time” and is probably in some relation to his drug use…)
I’ll be honest. I don’t think I’ve ever heard this song, but it garnered an overwhelming response on the voting pages. The only Falco I know is from Star Fox.

Blast from the ass
Can’t forget Der Kommissar, too.
Don’t turn around, oh-huh-uh
Der Kommissar’s in town, oh-huh-uh
You’re in his eye
And you’ll know why
The more you live
The faster you will die
Alles klar, Herr Kommissar?
Actually, the original (Falco) version of Der Kommissar was not in English. Those lyrics are from the cover by After The Fire.
You are correct. I didn’t remember that.
Nor Jeanny…
Jeanny, quit livin’ on dreams
Jeanny, life is not what it seems
Such a lonely little girl in a cold, cold world
There’s someone who needs you
Jeanny, quit livin’ on dreams
Jeanny, life is not what it seems
You’re lost in the night, don’t wanna struggle and fight
There’s someone, who needs you
You’ve never heard it? It was a one-hit wonder top 40 song. There were a couple of German ones–this one and 99 Luft Baloons by…Nena? Something like that. But that one also had an English version–this one never did.
That’s what I was thinking too.. HOW did they managed not to hear it?
Proly, born after 1990 or lived under a rock.
I’ve never heard of it either and I was born many years before 1990 and didn’t live under a rock. I was just never in to that kind of music.
Falco was from austria…
meh vid deosnt work anymore wanted to hear the song
Or there’s Planet of the Apes Musical version
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius
Oh… Dr. Zaius
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius
…Sorry if that’s too lowbrow and takes away the nostalgia but it always reminds me of that.
Nah, it’s not nearly as lowbrow as Family Guy:
Classic 80s rock!!! Lulz – you were never there then…
One hit wonder, fun, but not in any way shape or form “Classic!”
LOL… The tumor also has balls on his chin.
Our alternate lyrics:
I’m a danish, I’m a danish
I’m a danish, I’m a danish
Oh eat me, I’m a danish…
Personally I love the song, I love the fact that it’s half English, half German (I was taking German in high school when this came out). I just wish it were a litlte less repetitive, ’cause I’d love to sing it at karaoke.
Can’t go wrong with a Simpsons reference!
I love you, Dr. Zaius!!
I saw the video posted and knew there was a stupid Simpson’s joke about this song, but couldn’t remember it. Lol, thank you.
I hate every ape I see,
From chimpan-A to chimpanzee.
That song is the greatest compliment ever paid to Falco.
oh yeah Falco … loved his music. Shame about him really. he more or less dissapeared into oblivion (even in Austria) in the late 90s until his death (had a mysterious car accident)
I was like 4 or 5 when that came out and I thought that they were singing “some potatoes, some potatoes”!
i adore this song… and know it well… i can honestly say i don’t remember that quote … i do remember the line being “Es war um 1780
Und es war in Wien, No plastic money anymore”
anyone correct me if i’m wrong… and i’ll dig up the album to check… but that’s what i remember…
I believe Rick “Disco Duck” Dees did a parody called “Eat Me, I’m a Danish”.
“Eat me I’m a danish” was my catch phrase like forever!
But this Falco song, I had a record single (yes record single!) of it when I was like 10! I loved it.
It’s on my iPod today.
I’m from austria, and he really was our biggest export even if he only had this one song in the charts (we unfortunately don’t have many people who can actually sing..) but he’s still an icon
I’m from austria too… and I object
We had big ‘exports’ long before Falco and Arnie. Yah well… and I never was a Falco Fan, so…
T%hat’s not true. I’m from Austria as well and he had a lot more songs in the charts (but only in Austria and germany) like: junge Römer, Jeanny, Vienna calling aso. Vorher recherchieren dann schreiben bitte.
I of course know that he had more hits here, but i talked about america as I thought that everyone here’s talking about america. If you don’t get that i’m sorry must be my bad…
@siobhan: i think i’m just not old enough for them
Der Kommissar was also a hit, but most don’t remember it. He’s at least a two-hit wonder.
Hey, you’ve got the symphonic metal band Serenity, they can sing =^).
But yeah, anyone who never heard “Rock Me, Amadeaus” had to have been born after 1980…
Da waren schon noch a paar andere Hits, aber halt nicht international
looked like an awesome party
Win for me!
Whenever I hear it now, all I can think about is Mark McGrath singing, “Apple danish, apple danish” on ‘I Love the 80s’.
There’s even a Spanish version here in Mexico by “Molotov” =P
This version is better
Everything about Falco is a nostalgic win.
There was also a parody called Rock Me, Jerry Lewis, by the Tri 5 f (Mike Eliot and Bud LaTour) a regularly requested song on Dr. Demento. Good times were had by all!
Someone did a mash-up with rock me amadeus and star fox’s do a barrel roll that was pretty amusing, but got taken down for some reason.
I listen to the Falco cubed album off and on to this day. Must say my favorite is Tango the Night Away. What’s better than…
I kiss your lips I hold you tight
our bodies swaying in the pale moon light
we dance until the break of day
we’ll tango the night away. ole’
you misunderstand…they said “mango” not “tango”!
loser…
I hope you’re being facetious since the title of the song is “Tango the Night Away”
Great nostalgic win this one. So sad the way he died in 1998.
wut
I was 10 or so when it was on the radio.
mom never let it play in the car because it was so repetitive it was gonna make her “drive off a bridge”
dr demento, that brings back memories.
they stopped playing him in houston around the time this song came out.
I remember I was in 3rd grade and was allowed to stay up until midnight on sundays ONLY to listen to him.
then that station went to religious talk.
I believe Megaherz did a cover of this song.
YAY FALCO!! I loved this song, it was basically riding a wave during the time when the movie Amadeus came out (LOVED LOVED LOVED the movie! It has my favorite Mozart tune (Symphony No.25 In G Minor, K.183: 1st Movement) as a major theme, Symphony No.29 In A Major, K.201: 1st Movement: Allegro Moderato is a close second… although the Magic Flute has it’s appeal for me too) I was obsessed with Mozart for a rather long time after that!)
When I hear that song I hear.
Hot Potatoes
Hot Potatoes
Hot… Potatoes

I thought the usual phrase was “if you remember the 60s, you didn’t live through the 60’s” – but I suppose Falco could have appropriated it.
I love this song, BTW!
The Goth band Umbra et Imago did a great cover of this song. The original is just a wee bit better, though.
I remember dancing around to this and singing along at the top of my lungs, and to this day, just hearing the first bars makes me happy.
How could anyone not have heard this song? And one-hit wonder? I think not. Many people here have mentioned Der Kommissar, and Vienna Calling also got some airplay in this country.
I’m biased, though. Falco was (and remains) one of my top three hot as all get-out dark haired foreign new wave singers (waving to Peter Schilling and Adam Ant).
RIP Johann, We still love you!
God I loved this song (although as an Austrian myself I might be a bit biased) another really good one was Jenny (I remember that songs video was only allowed to air after some time late at night because there was a rape-scene in it)…
It’s so sad he had to die especially since ‘out of the dark’ became such a great hit – he could have come ‘out of the dark’ again enriching Austria’s music-culture. It came out 3 weeks after he died and no it wasn’t a big hit just because of his death it was a really good song.
Although there is an almost prophetic line in that song: ‘muss ich denn sterben um zu leben?’ which translates to: ‘do I have to die to life?’
Dr. Zaeus, Dr. Zaeues!!!
Apparently im the only one on here who hears this and thinks entirely of the blood hound gang song mope xD
Not quite: Mope was the only song on the entire album I’d have on repeat. Then again, nothing like Rock Me Amadeus (and the video, for that matter) to make one’s day.
Has anyone seen the (bad) German pop movie “Feel the Motion” (Der Formel Eins) ? He plays a parody of himself in it. It is so funny.
I’m 13, and I live in England but I remember this song for some reason. =/
Jeanny, Coming Home and Jeanny III. And Rock Me Amadeus only in the Canadian remixed version, _bitte_!
techn9ne i’m a playa?
