Epic Win: Homeward Bound
Submitted by Alana H
There was a commenter who was pretty upset because he/she thought I was promoting I Can Has Cheezburger when I explained the film Gremlins in terms of LOLcats. Obviously, that wasn’t what I was trying to do because, in reality, Cheezburger is ubiquitous and insanely popular. Why? Uh, because people love cats and dogs, and they love them even more when they can talk.
I don’t really need to explain why Homeward Bound: The Incredibly Journey is a classic. It’s one of the few universal rules: pets are awesome.
Also awesome: Michael J. Fox as the voice of Chance.

Oh come on! For REAL nostalgia go to the original movie (not “Homeward Bound”) based on the best-selling book by Sheila Burnford. If you read the book the original comes to life for you. More at http://disneydvd.disney.go.com/the-incredible-journey.html.
Thanks for the link… I guess I didn’t realize the original was based on a book. I SHOULD have though, Disney really doesn’t come up with many of their own original ideas…
Actually, the original movie from 1963 was much better than this remake, but the remake was cute, especially with Michael Fox as Chance, but my favorite was Shadow. He was one great pup! T he original movie was called The Incredible Journey, and it was actually pretty close to the novel by Sheila Burnford, not based on Disney’s idea of what the movie should be like. They even changed the names of the people. Disney seems to remake itself endlessly.
I was going to say, too–Never watched the movie because I read the book long ago and didn’t want to see it abused.
Absolutely WIN!! except now i can’t really watch it without laughing hysterically when i hear “Cats rule and dogs drool”
“Ow! OW!!! He bit me with his butt!”
(Chance encounters a porcupine)
That was a good movie. I haven’t seen that in years, though…

Blast from the ass
I have to agree with triviagal, the original “The Incredible Journey” is much more of a nostalgic win, and the book was truly heartwarming.
I went to college with the kid from that movie. Used to get drunk with him on a regular basis. Real lightweight.
My youngest daughter was only 8 when this movie came out. It wasn’t until years later when she and her younger brother discovered the movie and as young kids do, watch the same movie, over and over again. Yes, it’s a great heartwarming movie for all ages. Loved the cat!
Oh man. I just saw it on TV a month ago and it is still just as awesome as the first time I saw it. My mom doesn’t like it, but that’s only because it makes her cry every time…
I tear up just watching the dang movie trailer! I remember as a child having to fast forward that last scene where Shadow doesn’t come back for what seems like an eternity, then he limps back to his boy Peter. I’ll have to rent this next time I’m PMS-ing and really scare the crap out of my husband
I prefer the book, and the original movie.
For one thing, the remake reversed the characters ofthe two dogs. Originally, the retiever is the young dog and the bull terrier is the old dog.
And they didn’t need to “talk”
My mom never laughs so hard as she does when animals talk! Her favorite lines from this movie were, “you let it es-CAPE!” (he throws a frisbee) and of course the classic, “BATDOOOOOGGGG!!!” To this day i can say either of those and she’ll giggle her head off.
(More recently, her giggle bucket gets tipped by the guinea pigs in the FBI movie… “Poop in his hand, poop in his hand!”
I watch this whenever I can and cry everytime. Once I actually yelled at the TV “Come on Shadow! Don’t you dare die!” Yeah. I’m sad like that XD
This movie always made me blubber like a little girl (when I watched it as a little girl).
the original movie was awesome.
agreed.
M J Fox may be awesome but whoever makes the little blurb captions below each win is not. AHAHAhaha
Also awesome is you will probably delete the above comment but still do nothing about the “Hail Hitler” comment in the previous win.
Oh oh oh! Fun fact: The cat in the movie was from my home town!
It’s even more of an epic win for me because I had the same kind of cat (looked frigging IDENTICAL) and she was named Sassy. I thought it was kinda lame but, she was a year old when we got her so nothing we could do about her name.
I LOVED this movie when i was little…… i still do.
Apparently when I saw it the first time with my mom I burst into tears when Sassy went over the waterfall saying “Is Sassy going to be OKAY?!” and my mom hadn’t seen it before and couldn’t tell me.
Alas, I loaned my copy to a friend and never got it back.
YES! i’ve been wondering when this was going to get posted here! one of my favorite movies as a kid <3
Watched it once as a kid and cried through the whole thing because I didn’t like the idea of a dog or cat getting lost. (We had a golden retriever and a fluffy black cat.) Every time they’d try to make me watching, say at school, I would make my mom, who felt the same way about the movie, call me in sick that day. Anything revolving around animals I don’t do. Oliver in Company, that episode of Futurama with the frozen dog, can’t do it.
The original ‘Incredible Journey’ movie marked some of the last of the family movies as they transitioned from quality, deep (to a point), fun, enriching movies that often didn’t shy away from scary scenes and/or death to movies with weak scripts that depended often on cheap body humor. The book was amazing too–really got into the natural mind of animals. But we’re talking about the movie. I liked ‘Homeward Bound’ but I wouldn’t watch it over and over. Especially with the mandatory butt and poop jokes…pleeasse. *end rant*
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Still have the video; I should dig it back out and rewatch it. The banter between Chance and Sassy is hilarious!
“Are you calling me fat?”
“Of course not – for a hippopotamus!”
“I think I swallowed a button…”
Homeward Bound = Greatest movie ever. It still makes me cry every time I watch the end. I know just about every line to it – god I’m such a dork.
Michael J. Fox player Chance? Never knew that…
Anyway, I loved this movie and still hear the theme song every once in a while in my head. Too bad our only copy is on VHS, I’d love to watch it again.
One of the best lines that came from it was when the cat flies into the sandbox and says “HE DROPPED INTO THE BIG LITTER BOX!!!” My kids were always scared of sandboxes from that moment on.
I’m 18, and about 12 years ago I would watch this everyday and cry my eyes out! This is still one of the saddest movies I’ve ever seen.
This was a sweet little movie. I remember watching it in theater as a kid.
